Letter from Masaru Teshiba, to Virginia B. Lowers, January 24, 1946
In this letter, Masaru Teshiba writes to Virginia Lowers, his former English teacher from 1942. He describes his experience of being incarcerated first at the Manzanar incarceration camp and then to Tule Lake. The decision to move to Tule Lake was motivated, according to Teshiba, to reunite with his father who had already been brought to Tule Lake. He notes in this letter that the "majority [of people] it seemed were loyal to Japan." He then describes briefly how he became involved in an organization of pro-Japanese young men which eventually lead to him renouncing his American citizenship. Teshiba then explains that his purpose for writing to his former teacher is to request a character reference from her, as his lawyer explained, such a recommendation from a "Caucasian person" would be beneficial in making the case that he should be able to remain in the United States as a citizen. Also included is a short note to the censor requesting that this letter be mailed although it is perhaps too long.Gerth Archives Japanese American History Collection contains books, pamphlets, flyers, photographs, booklets, correspondence, periodicals, and oversized material related to Japanese Americans. Subjects in the collection include incarceration camps, Southbay local history, World War II propaganda, Japanese American families, incarceration camp pilgrimages, and other topics

<Articles>The Immigrant Societies under the Qing 清 Dynasty : An Introductory Study of the Bailian-jiao 白蓮教 Sect Rebellion in the Jiaqing 嘉慶 Period
From the end of the 17th century to the end of the 18th century, there were many people exuded as immigrants from some advanced provinces, with Hukuang 湖広 as their center, to the boundary region among Sichuan 四川, Hubei 湖北, and Shanxi 陝西. In this region the Bailian-jiao sect rebellion broke out and it is generally considered that this rebel army was composed of the immigrants. In this paper, the author tries to make clear the process of organizing the immigrant Societies and the social problems causing the rebellion. The immigrant societies which were at first composed of some associations from the same province, came to be reorganized by kinship. By the end of the Qianlung 乾隆 period some large landowners became powerful and monopolized the channels of economic circulation in the plain. And they tried to organize the family relations into the Zongzu 宗族 system. On the other hand, the mountaineers under pressure came to crisis of losing their own family relations. These conditions prepared for the large social change in the first year of the Jiaqing period

Uniform Ductility of High Carbon Steels
Title: Uniform Ductility of High Carbon Steels, Author: Masaru Yamaguchi, Location: ThodeThe effect of microstructure on uniform ductility was analyzed by utilizing a fact that uniform ductility is equal to the work hardening coefficient in parabolic true stress-true strain equation. A Hall-Petch relation was found for the flow stress of lamellar and spheroidized high carbon steels. The uniform ductility was formulated as a function of reciprocal flow stress and found to fit the experimental data.An attempt to interpret the results obtained, based on the scanning and transmission electron microscopy observations, were given.ThesisMaster of Engineering (ME

CRUSTAL STRAIN MEASUREMENTS USING A LASER HOLOGRAPHIC METHOD AT THE IWAKURA OBSERVATORY
The technique of laser holographic interferometry can detect two- or three-dimensionalsmall displacements in terms of the wavelength of laser light, without contacting the object. We developed a portable holographic recording system consisting of a 30 mW He-Ne gas laserand associated optical elements. The system was installed in a tunnel having a length of30 m at Iwakura, Kyoto in 1988. Using the system, small deformations of the tunnel due totidal forces were successfully observed. The results are consistent with tidal strains obser-ved with extensometers which were installed in the same tunnel. The technique of laser holographic interferometry can detect two- or three-dimensionalsmall displacements in terms of the wavelength of laser light, without contacting the object. We developed a portable holographic recording system consisting of a 30 mW He-Ne gas laserand associated optical elements. A Study on 'Shenliang 紳糧' : the Local Elite in Sichuan during the Qing Period
The development of Sichuan during the Qing period, until the end of the 18th century, made progress owing to large numbers of immigrants flowing into the region. An explosive growth of the population and complication of administrative affairs were accordingly brought about. However, the structure of administrative expenditure and tax collection that had been taking shape in the early Qing were almost permanently maintained until the end of the dynasty, and they gradually began to be unfitted for the actual condition of the society. The fixed scale of administrative expenditures was relatively cut down in proportion to the complication of administrative affairs. The gongju 公局 was established so that it might deal with the above mentioned problems. The gongju was an institutionalized supplement to the local administration, and at the same time had the feature of a local financial organ, through which the local society paid the necessary expenses to the local administration itself. It was during the Daoguang 道光 period, in other words, during the same period as the emergence of the gongju that the term shenliang began to be widely used. Shenliang stood for the local elite-class which was created and authorised as leadership of gongju system for the purpose of the local finance by the local government
Translation dictation vs. post-editing with cloud-based voice recognition: a pilot experiment
In this paper, we report on a pilot mixed-methods experiment investigating the effects on
productivity and on the translator experience of integrating machine translation (MT) postediting (PE) with voice recognition (VR) and translation dictation (TD). The experiment
was performed with a sample of native Spanish participants. In the quantitative phase of the
experiment, they performed four tasks under four different conditions, namely (1)
conventional TD; (2) PE in dictation mode; (3) TD with VR; and (4) PE with VR (PEVR).
In the follow-on qualitative phase, the participants filled out an online survey, providing
details of their perceptions of the task and of PEVR in general. Our results suggest that
PEVR may be a usable way to add MT to a translation workflow, with some caveats. When
asked about their experience with the tasks, our participants preferred translation without the
‘constraint’ of MT, though the quantitative results show that PE tasks were generally more
efficient. This paper provides a brief overview of past work exploring VR for from-scratch
translation and PE purposes, describes our pilot experiment in detail, presents an overview
and analysis of the data collected, and outlines avenues for future work
