Dysphagia rehabilitation: similarities and differences in three areas of the world

    No full text
Although the goal of dysphagia rehabilitation is the same, population needs, clinical practice patterns, availability of resources, and dysphagia research varies greatly around the world. The goal of this review is to introduce the reader to the context in which dysphagia rehabilitation is practiced, to describe practice patterns, and to highlight the dysphagia research being performed in three distinct regions of the world: North America, New Zealand and Australia, and Japan.

    No full text

<Article>The "List of Ise-daizingū-ryo" 伊勢太神宮領注文 of 1192 and "Sinpōsyo" 神鳳鈔 a basic point of view for the study of Zingu-ryo 神宮領

It is well known that the "List of lsezingu-ryo" which was handed over to the Dazyokan in 1192, and "Sinposyo" are documents of major importance for the study of Zingu-ryo, but the author feels that they have been used without sufficient examination about their character. This study is such an examination, which has made clear that the list of Zingu-ryo, lacks references to the fiefs of Singun 神郡 in the Ise country 伊勢国, to those outside the Ise country and to those of no-Singun. Moreover, the "Sinposyo" consists of documents of the Zyokyu 承久 Period (which were written to establish a system of cult and differs in character from the "List of Zingu-ryo"), and of the other documents written for the imposition of Nissyokumai 日食米 at the time of Sengu 遷宮. But the author has discovered that the documents of the Zyokyu Period, which supposedly show the complete dominion of Zingu, contain mere mention of Naigu-ryo 内宮領, and nothing on Tyokkatu-ryo. It is suggested that taking into consideration these new facts is necessary for the study of Zingu-ryo

10th and 11th Century Chinese Inscriptions Found at Bodhgaya and Donative Objects by Chinese Pilgrim Monks to India

Chōnen (938-1016), an eminent Japanese monk known for bringing the legendary Shakyamuni statue in Seiryō-ji from the Song Dynasty China in 985, was recorded to have planned a journey to India but aborted it in the end. Indeed, there is no confirmation of any Japanese monk who traveled to India in the pre-modern period. In contrast, records show frequent movement of monks between China and India between the 10th and 11th century around Chōnen's sojourn in Song. Attesting to this are inscriptions dedicated by Chinese monks found at Bodhgaya, a sacred pilgrimage site where Buddha was believed to have attained enlightenment. A. Cunningham listed six inscriptions in his report published in 1892 ; all contain records related to the production of Buddhist images or stupas and are thus highly valuable. For instance, three stone slabs carved in 1022, narrate the donation of a monastic robe (sk. kāsāya) by a monk from Kaifeng, and a stele dated to 1033 records the carving of a stone pagoda for the Northern Song Emperor Renzong and Empress Dowager Zhuangxian. While these inscriptions have been attracting academic attention since the late 19th century from scholars like E. Chavannes, the interpretation of their content is far from being resolved. The location of two of the six inscriptions is unclear, but the remaining four pieces are kept in the Indian Museum of Kolkata, which the author has recently had a chance to examine. This current article reintroduces the six inscriptions and discusses the relationship between Buddhist translations during the Song dynasty and donations made by Chinese pilgrim monks in Bodh-gaya as well as other problems relevant to these inscriptions. A notable scholarly trend in recent years is the increasing interest in the interrelations between the knowledge of pilgrimage sites in India and the development of Buddhist art in East Asia. While research for the period between 7th and 9th century has witnessed major progress thanks to a large accumulation of existing literature on the Tang dynasty Buddhist art and the concurrent situations in Korea and Japan, the situation in subsequent periods is shrouded in obscurity due to the lack of available materials. If this current article can be of any contribution to the latter, it will not only provide a new perspective to the Sino-Indian relations, but also cast fresh light on Japanese monks who went to the Song dynasty such as Chōnen and open up new possibilities to assess the impact of these individuals on the development of Buddhist art in the Heian Kamakura period

Multidimensional Dysphagia Assessment in Middle-aged and Older Adults: Scoping Review Protocol

    No full text
Swallowing disorders (dysphagia) are highly prevalent among middle-aged and older adults, particularly in populations with neurological diseases, head and neck cancers, and age-related conditions. The assessment of dysphagia necessitates a multidimensional approach that integrates clinical, instrumental, and functional evaluations to provide a comprehensive understanding of swallowing physiology and dysfunction. Dysphagia is a prevalent condition in middle-aged and older adults, with significant health and quality-of-life implications (Inamoto &amp; Kaneoka, 2022). A multidimensional swallowing assessment is essential for identifying underlying causes and developing effective interventions. Swallowing is a complex physiological process involving multiple structures and coordinated neuromuscular functions. Dysphagia can lead to malnutrition, dehydration, and aspiration pneumonia, significantly impacting overall well-being and life expectancy (Ishizuka, Yamana, &amp; Yasunaga, 2024). Given these risks, a comprehensive and multidimensional approach to swallowing assessment is crucial for ensuring an effective and patient-centered management intervention. Abstract PD4-08: Efficacy of compression therapy using surgical gloves for nanoparticle albumin-bound-paclitaxel-induced peripheral neuropathy: A phase II multicenter study by the Kamigata breast cancer study group

Abstract PURPOSE: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is an adverse effect of many commonly used chemotherapeutic agents, including taxanes. However, there is currently no established effective prophylactic management for CIPN. Thus, we investigated the efficacy of using surgical glove (SG) compression therapy to prevent nanoparticle albumin-bound-paclitaxel (nab-PTX)-induced peripheral neuropathy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with primary and recurrent breast cancer who received 260 mg/m2 of nab-PTX were eligible for this case-control study. The patients wore two SGs of the same size, that is, one size smaller than the size that fit, on their dominant hand for 90 minutes. They did not wear SGs on the non-dominant hand, which served as the control hand. Peripheral neuropathy was evaluated at each treatment cycle using Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) version 4.0 and the Patient Neurotoxicity Questionnaire (PNQ). The temperatures of each fingertip of the compression SG-protected and control hands were measured by using thermography. RESULTS: Between August 2013 and January 2016, 43 patients were enrolled, and 42 were evaluated. As shown in Table 1, the overall occurrence of ≥grade 2 sensory and motor peripheral neuropathy according to the CTCAE was significantly lower in the SG-protected hands than in the control hands (76.1% vs. 21.4% and 57.1% vs. 26.2%, respectively, p &amp;lt; 0.0001). The PNQ results showed that the incidence of ≥grade 4 neuropathy was significantly higher in the control hands than in the SG-protected hands in terms of both sensory and motor neurotoxicity (p &amp;lt; 0.0001, Table 2). As the treatment cycles of nab-PTX increased, the mean CTCAE and PNQ grades of the control hands gradually increased. However, the SG-protected hands maintained significantly lower mean grades than the control hands over time (p &amp;lt; 0.0001). No patients withdrew from this study because they could not tolerate the compression from the SGs. The mean temperature of each fingertip significantly decreased (1.42–2.60 °C) in the SG-protected hands compared to in the control hands. CONCLUSIONS: SG compression therapy appears effective for reducing nab-PTX-induced peripheral neuropathy. The nab-PTX exposure to the peripheral nerve may be decreased because the SG decreases microvascular flow to the fingertip.

    No full text
論文(Article)application/pd
