    Italian Commercial (or Business) Law is largely based on the Italian Civil Code. It encompasses all the basic features of this area of Italian Law. The main one is subject, i.e. the entrepreneur, which can be a collective body, in which case it will be in the form of a "societa" which includes both partnerships and companies, or again as a collective body other than a societa, for instance a consorzio. There are also cooperative enterprises, which play a very relevant economic role in many regions of the country, which are also regarded as societa. There are many features of entrepreneurial activities, but only a select few may be discussed within the confines of this work. They are business ( azienda), unfair competition, antitrust rules and intellectual property. We will also provide a brief account of insolvency law, as found in the Italian Insolvency Act ( Legge fallimentare), which is about to undergo comprehensive and radical reform in the coming years. We will end the discussion with an overview of the banking system and its basic features, as this matter is largely covered by EU law mainly through its directives and regulations

    Foreign Trade System and Law

    This chapter provides a concise description of Italy's foreign trade system and law, intended for Chinese commercial actors interested in trade relations with European countries under the Belt and Road initiative. As a matter of fact, Italy, as a Member State of the European Union, is subject to the EU's exclusive competence in matters of Common Commercial Policy, and forms part of the EU's Customs Union. Accordingly, this chapter is essentially focused on the distinctive features of the EU's Customs Union and Common Commercial Policy, drawing light, insofar as relevant given the direct applicability of most EU acts in the field concerned, on national implementation issues. As noted in the introductory footnote, although this chapter is the result of mutual exchange of views among the co-authors, Fabrizio Marongiu Buonaiuti is mainly responsibile for the drafting of Sections 2.1 to 2.3 and Sections 2.5 to 2.11, while Pamela Lattanzi for the drafting of Sections 2.4 and 2.13, and Alessio Bartolacelli for the drafting of Section 2.12

    Risk assessment of e-waste - Liquid Crystal Monomers re-suspension caused by coastal dredging operations

    The Pearl River Estuary (PRE), one of the primary e-waste recycling centers in the world, has been suffering from the pollution of Liquid Crystal Monomers (LCMs), critical materials with persistent, bio-accumulative, and toxic substances used in electronic devices. It has been detected in seabed sediment with both high frequency and concentration near PRE - Hong Kong (HK) waters. In the same area, dredging operations with in-situ sediment have been frequently used in the last decades for coastal land reclamation projects. Dredging is known to cause a huge amount of sediment re-suspension into water columns, with potential damage to marine ecosystems and biodiversity. In this study, we proposed a new risk assessment strategy to estimate the secondary pollution due to the re-suspension sediment highly contaminated by LCMs. We formulate a robust and reliable probabilistic approach based on unsupervised machine learning and hydrodynamic and sediment transport numerical simulation. New risk indexes were also proposed to better quantify the impact of contaminated sediments. We applied the methodology to assess the potential impact of dredging operations in the PRE and Hong Kong waters on the local marine ecosystem. The results of the analysis showed how the potentially contaminated areas depended on the dredging locations

    Developing a flexible framework for spatiotemporal population modelling

    This article proposes a general framework for modeling population distributions in space and time. This is particularly pertinent to a growing range of applications that require spatiotemporal specificity; for example, to inform planning of emergency response to hazards. Following a review of attempts to construct time-specific representations of population, we identify the importance of assembling an underlying data model at the highest resolution in each of the spatial, temporal, and attribute domains. This model can then be interrogated at any required intersection of these domains. We argue that such an approach is necessary to moderate the effects of what we term the modifiable spatiotemporal unit problem in which even detailed spatial data might be inadequate to support time-sensitive analyses. We present an initial implementation of the framework for a case study of Southampton, United Kingdom, using bespoke software (SurfaceBuilder247). We demonstrate the generation of spatial population distributions for multiple reference times using currently available data sources.     The stability of imine-containing dynamic [2]rotaxanes to hydrolysis

    Large amounts (>100 mol equivalents) of water are required to effect by hydrolysis the partial disassembly of the rings from the dumbbell components of two dynamic [2]rotaxanes. The two dynamic [2]rotaxanes are comprised of [24]crown-8 rings—each of which incorporate two imine bonds—encircling a dumbbell component composed of a dibenzylammonium ion in which each of the two benzyl substituents carries two methoxyl groups ttached to their 3- and 5-positions. A mechanism for the partial disassembly of the two dynamic [2]rotaxanes, involving the cleavage of the kinetically labile imine bonds by water molecules, is proposed. The most important experimental observation to be noted is the fact that the hydrolysis of the macrocyclic diimines, associated with the templating –CH2NH2 +CH2–centres in the middle of their dumbbells, turns out to be an uphill task to perform in the face of the molecular recognition provided by strong [N+–H ◊ ◊ ◊ O] hydrogen bonds and weaker, yet not insignificant, [C–H◊ ◊ ◊ O] interactions. The dynamic nature of the imine bond formation and hydrolysis is such that the acyclic components produced during hydrolysis of the imine bonds can be enticed to cyclise once again around the –CH2NH2 +CH2–template, affording the [2]rotaxanes. The reluctance of imine bonds, present in substantial numbers in larger molecular and extended structures, is significant when it comes to exercising dynamic chemistry in compounds where multiple imine bonds are present
