    A quantitative data representation framework for structural and functional MR Imaging with application to prostate cancer detection

    Prostate cancer (CaP) is currently the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States among men, but there is a paucity of non-invasive image-based information for CaP detection and staging in vivo. Studies have shown the utility of multi-protocol magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to improve CaP detection accuracy by using both T2-weighted (T2w), dynamic contrast enhanced (DCE), and diffusion weighted (DWI) MRI information. In this thesis, we present methods for quantitative representation of structural and functional imaging data with the objective of building automated classifiers to improve CaP detection accuracy in vivo. In vivo disease presence was quantified via extraction of textural signatures from T2w MRI. Evaluation of these signatures showed that CaP appearance within each of the two dominant prostate regions (central gland, peripheral zone) is significantly different. A classifier trained on zone-specific features also yielded a higher detection accuracy compared to a simpler, monolithic combination of all the texture features. While a number of automated classifiers are available, classifier choice must account for limitations in dataset size and annotation (such as with in vivo prostate MRI). A comprehensive evaluation of different classifier schemes was undertaken for the specific problem of automated CaP detection via T2w MRI on a zonewise basis. It was found that simple classifiers yielded significantly improved CaP detection accuracies compared to complex classifiers. Fundamental differences must be overcome when constructing a unified quantitative representation of structural (T2w) and functional (DCE, DWI) MRI. We present a novel technique, referred to as consensus embedding, which constructs a lower dimensional representation (embedding) from a high dimensional feature space such that information (class-based or otherwise) is optimally preserved. Consensus embedding is shown to result in an improved representation of the data compared to alternative DR-based strategies in a variety of experimental domains. A unified quantitative representation of T2w, DCE, and DWI prostate MRI was constructed via the consensus embedding framework. This yielded an integrated classifier which was more accurate for CaP detection in vivo as compared to using structural and functional information individually, or using a naive combination of such differing types of information.Ph.     Security for proof of work blockchains via checkpointing

    Finality gadgets are comprised of a Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) protocol finalizing blocks produced by a Proof-of-Work (PoW) or Proof-of-Stake (PoS) chain protocol. They have become very popular methods for combining the best features of the BFT and PoW protocols and are proposed for deployment in many major blockchains. While the finality gadget architecture has been explored through many distinct dimensions, their performance under an adversarial majority in the PoW chain protocol has received scant attention. The raison d’etre for a finality gadget is to provide safety even under an adversarial majority in the PoW chain (hence the term “finality” gadget). While safety guarantee is easily provided by the finality gadget, significant liveness vulnerabilities exist. The proposed remedy achieves asymptotic liveness but the achieved chain quality (the fraction of honest blocks in the ledger) and latency deteriorate exponentially as the adversary power increases beyond 50%. Furthermore, the proposed gadget does not guarantee liveness in protocols beyond the Nakamoto longest chain. In this thesis, we propose Advocate, a new finality gadget architecture, which achieves two main results: (a) optimal chain quality and low latency under a super-majority adversary for the Nakamoto longest chain protocol and (b) generalization to a variety of parallel-chain based scaling architectures, including OHIE, Prism and ledger combiner.     Dynamic human resource management decision support model based on tactical aircraft maintenance demand forecasts

    The long and therefore expensive training of aircraft maintenance technicians underline the need for accurate demand forecasts that allow for dynamic control of acquisition and training rate of personnel. This control enables human resource management to react swiftly to increases in workforce demand at times of technician shortages. To help human resource management a novel decision support model based on tactical demand forecasts in the aircraft maintenance context is proposed in this paper. Additionally, this paper presents a systematic research towards the optimal models to forecast tactical maintenance demand. The analysis is conducted using aggregated structural repair data of a fleet of wide-body passenger aircraft in the first ten years of its introduction. The results of this study show the potential of the proposed model as it is robust for varying amounts of non-constant workforce outflow and different fleet sizes. Furthermore, the model can be applied efficiently from one year after the acquisition of the first new aircraft. The novelty of this study is the direct integration of personnel training and acquisition with workforce demand forecasts. Additional research is recommended to validate the use of this model on other aircraft types, to explore the use of this model in the area of human resource management optimization and to extent this model to an organizational levelAerospace Engineerin
