Finally, some recommendations for the development of bereavement counselling in relation to social policy, service delivery, education and training, workers' personal development, as well as future research were presented.In--depth interviews were conducted with 12 social workers working in palliative care. This figure was nearly half of the total number of palliative care social workers in Taiwan, so the research findings may reflect the general situation of bereavement counselling in Taiwan. Their stories revealed the endeavours of these social workers in the past years and showed the development of the services from nothing to multifarious.The narratives of the workers reflected the required individual characteristics of a bereavement counsellor, such as stability in emotion, resilience, creativity, psychic energy. Due to the nature of their work they often encountered death and sufferings, as well as feeling of helplessness. In facing different obstacles and challenges, some of them might retreat themselves at times, especially for those who were still entangled in their personal bereavement. Their emotional state would affect the establishment of effective helping relationship and subsequently the effectiveness of their service.The research revealed that most of the social workers did not apply any specific theories, or techniques in working with the bereaved. Their narratives reflected that they worked with the bereaved by establishing a meaningful working relationship. They respected and accepted their clients' needs; their empathic support helped the bereaved face the pain of losing their loved ones. Their encouragement and assurance helped them develop and change. Their skills and methods matched well with those of humanism and existentialism. They also tended to adopt postmodernism approach of storytelling in helping the bereaved. Through narration, the workers helped the bereaved re-construct the meaning of their relationship with the deceased in their life.The study revealed that the social workers considered most of the bereaved had the ability of self-healing, but for some, due to personal or environmental factors they might be entangled in their grief and might need assistance. Their work reflected the emphases of bereavement counselling in Taiwan. Besides counselling service, they also provided assistance in medical related matters, emotional support, enhancement of family members' communication, social adjustment and religious support. Due to the socio-cultural backgrounds of Taiwan, their tasks also included special arrangements at death and discussion of funeral services and rituals. The social workers also stressed the importance of the traditional value of harmony among Heaven, Earth and Man. They paid special attention to the emotional harmony of the bereaved, harmony between the bereaved and their relatives, and harmony among the social environment, the spiritual and the bereaved.This study is a narrative analysis of the palliative care social workers' experiences in bereavement counselling in Taiwan. Stimulating technical innovation by small and medium-sized enterprises in China
The effect of innovation on the economy is increasingly obvious and important in many countries, including China. In order to encourage and sustain technological innovation, Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) are not only necessary but also vital. This dissertation is an empirical study to test what critical measures the government should adopt and balance in order to efficiently pursue its goal of increasing innovation by SMEs.
This dissertation focuses on the measures of intellectual property (IP), public sector, including the subsidies or grants from government, and private sector, the financial tools as the main capital resources for technology companies. The government makes the rules and policies for both a market-oriented economy and a government-oriented economy. However, under both models, the government should craft meaningful rules and regulations that benefit SMEs. Accordingly, government regulators need to know whether they should encourage the free market further or pursue command and control in the government-dominated sector. This study will evaluate the flexibility of the different administrative systems, rules and regulations of IP, taxes, subsidies, financial market and other related government actions.
This study will use panel data regressions to study with the 140 public SMEs from two science parks in China, Zhongguan-Cun Science Park in Beijing and Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park in Shanghai, to learn the efficiency of the variance of the rules and policies in their innovation between 2009 and 2013, especially when the rules and policies are criticized by other countries as a weak IP regime, over subsidies, weak lender protection and bad enforcement of financial contract. Moreover, this study will also use difference-in-difference estimations to study the impact of the 2011 tax policy changes in China and the 2012 patent subsidy policy change in Shanghai on the innovation, market performance and patenting behaviors of the 140 SMEs.
Zhongguan-Cun Science Park and Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park are two national model technical industry parks, and they include most of the enterprises developing technologies in Beijing or Shanghai. Usually, various types of national favoring policies apply to the firms in these two science parks ahead of the science parks in the other provinces in China. Their administrative measures are tested and analyzed, and those measures that are found to be successful and innovative are then applied to other science parks.
Regardless of what caused the successful growth of the domestic companies, the Chinese government has kept providing funding, offering subsidies and attractive regulations to them. The main objective of the policies in the two parks is to create and to facilitate technical SMEs' survival and growth. The government also understands the important of the capital from the financial market, so it is providing guide funds and policies governing the financial market. In addition, the government is also guiding companies to use IP regimes to improve their ability to compete and the government expects original innovations from them to improve China’s ability to compete and innovate in the technology sector in a time of globalization. However, the costs of different measures are different, so it is necessary for the government to identify the most efficient strategies to encourage SMEs' creation. Hence, besides independently testing the efficiency of each approach of the policies, this study combines and compares the efficiency of the three approaches of policies in stimulating the SME to innovate.
The results from this work will not only help the government of China to understand the strategies adopted by the two cities for stimulating technical innovation by SMEs but also help to engineer similar science parks in the other provinces. Functional encryption based approaches for practical privacy-preserving machine learning
Machine learning (ML) is increasingly being used in a wide variety of application domains. However, deploying ML solutions poses a significant challenge because of increasing privacy concerns, and requirements imposed by privacy-related regulations. To tackle serious privacy concerns in ML-based applications, significant recent research efforts have focused on developing privacy-preserving ML (PPML) approaches by integrating into ML pipeline existing anonymization mechanisms or emerging privacy protection approaches such as differential privacy, secure computation, and other architectural frameworks. While promising, existing secure computation based approaches, however, have significant computational efficiency issues and hence, are not practical.
In this dissertation, we address several challenges related to PPML and propose practical secure computation based approaches to solve them. We consider both two-tier cloud-based and three-tier hybrid cloud-edge based PPML architectures and address both emerging deep learning models and federated learning approaches. The proposed approaches enable us to outsource data or update a locally trained model in a privacy-preserving manner by employing computation over encrypted datasets or local models. Our proposed secure computation solutions are based on functional encryption (FE) techniques. Evaluation of the proposed approaches shows that they are efficient and more practical than existing approaches, and provide strong privacy guarantees. We also address issues related to the trustworthiness of various entities within the proposed PPML infrastructures. This includes a third-party authority (TPA) which plays a critical role in the proposed FE-based PPML solutions, and cloud service providers. To ensure that such entities can be trusted, we propose a transparency and accountability framework using blockchain. We show that the proposed transparency framework is effective and guarantees security properties. Experimental evaluation shows that the proposed framework is efficient

Manufacturers of consumer goods are trying to establish a direct link to consumers and to strengthen their competitive position by offering additional services. Even for simple services like a free warranty extension, manufacturers often rely on old-fashioned mail-in coupons and have to encourage consumers to reach out to them over inefficient channels. We suspect that the transaction costs for initiating such relationships are prohibitively high and limit the potential. Therefore, we conducted a survey among 1012 consumers to determine the current and desired level of product-related service consumptions. Our findings suggest an increase of 22% in intention to use if search cost were reduced. In a second step, we quantify the potential of reducing search cost by developing and evaluating a mobile IS for services. The results show a potential of effort reduction by factor 11 and identify opportunities for enabling an increase in product-related service consumption with information systems
A new hepatotoxic triterpenoid ketone from Curculigo orchioides
To investigate hepatotoxic constituents, a new cycloartane-type triterpenoid ketone together with four known components was isolated from rhizomes of Curculigo orchioides. The structures of five compounds were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic methods, including 1D and 2D NMR, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Rhopeptin A was isolated as the first cyclopentapeptide from the moss Rhodobyum giganteum [Schwaegr.] Par. This novel compound consists of proline, phenylalanine, and 3-hydroxyproline ring-bonded amino acid residues connected to a tyrosine fragment via an ether bridge.
