Getting On: Some Thoughts on Women and Ageing

    No full text
In a culture that advocates the pursuit of endless youth and physical beauty how can we embrace the reality, the pleasures and the rewards of getting on? And what does the ‘fight against ageing’ mean when all women must eventually face the double-standard of ageism and sexism? Once past fifty, older women begin to sense that they have become invisible. From the visual displays in the mall to the pages of magazines and the television screens at the heart of our homes, young women with perfect skin, bouncy, enhanced breasts, pouting lips, long straight hair and perfect teeth gaze down on us. The ageing population is traditionally viewed as a problem; a drain on financial resources, health, housing and community services and a burden on younger generations. But living longer and living well are the triumphs of a civilised society. It is also the future that all generations want for themselves. Can we change the conversation on ageing? Getting old is tough, but it’s also an opportunity to celebrate how far we have come and to shape a different future. In this essay, Liz Byrski (author of Last Chance Cafe and Bad Behaviour) examines the adventure of growing old in the twenty-first century: the new possibilities, the joy and the sorrow of solitude, the reality of grief and loss and the satisfaction of having travelled so far

Last year at the Inaugural TQR Conference, Sally and Dan conducted a workshop entitled Getting Published: Journey into an Editor\u27s Mind, highlighting what an editor thinks when she/he reviews a submitted manuscript to TQR. For the 2011 TQR Conference we will offer a variation of this presentation by including the voice of an author. Our workshop is entitled Getting Published: Journey into a Relationship between Editor and Author. In this workshop we will present a conversation between an author (Paige) and editor (Sally) to reveal an example of a relationship that develops between the two during the process of editorial review at TQR

Home ownership: Getting in, getting from, getting out. Part III

    No full text
This book provides an overview of the effects of home ownership, a housing sector that has grown rapidly in recent years in many countries, not least because this is normally encouraged by governments. The first part of the subtitle, ‘Getting in’, refers to processes in the development of the homeownership stock including problems of access, which in turn implies issues of affordability, the viability of financial institutions and subsidies. ‘Getting from’ indicates that this form of housing tenure may provide households with advantages such as wealth accumulation and independence that may not be available to tenants. Finally, the last section ‘getting out’ refers to the risks associated with home ownership such as the fact that their tenure positions may be founded on their ability to meet loan repayments. This publication is a follow-up to Home ownership: Getting in, getting form and getting out, parts I and II, and is a result of the conference ‘Building on home ownership; housing policies and social strategies’ in Delft, organized by the ENHR working group Home ownership & Globalisation and hosted by OTB Research Institute for Housing, Urban and Mobility Studies, Delft University of Technology. Part III provides an overview of the most recent research results in this field.OTBArchitecture and The Built Environmen

Women's Labor Force Participation and Probability of Getting Divorced

    No full text
By using individual level panel data from 1995 to 1997, and running models with individual fixed effect and year fixed effect, the author concludes that there is no valid evidence that increase in women labor force participation can lead to rise of probability of getting divorced. Furthermore, this effect is heterogeneous among different education levels. Empirical results also find out that having high school degree has positive effect on the probability of getting divorced, while having college degree, income and number of children inthe family all have negative effect. Based on these results, measures which can increase women’s college education rate can help lower divorce rate
