Cultural identities as reflected in the literature of the Northern and Southern dynasties period (4th-6th centuries A.D.)
During the period of the Northern and Southern dynasties of China identity questions became serious in a society thrown into disorder by political, religious and ethnic problems. This thesis uses three books written in the sixth century to
discuss how educated Chinese faced identity problems and how they dealt with them.
The Buddhist monk Huijiao, dealt with the problems of sinifying a foreign religion. He constructed many different identities in addition to the Buddhist one for the monks in his book Gaoseng zhuan, (Lives of Eminent Monks), a collection of biographies of Buddhist monks, to bring Buddhism closer to Chinese tradition and more acceptable by Confucian standards. Through the identity construction he
also made responses to anti-Buddhist ideas.
Yang Xuanzhi's Luoyang qielan ji, (Record of the Monasteries of Luoyang), deals with the identity problems of Chinese officials serving a Xianbei regime in
the north and of the short-lived capital of the Northern Wei in Luoyang. Yang reconstructed a Chinese identity for the lost capital as a true heir of Chinese tradition, as were the emperors, princes and officials who lived there. He created an identity defined not by ethnicity but by culture.
Yan Zhitui's Tanshi jiaxun, (Family Instruction of the Yan Clan), is a book which tells his descendants how to construct and maintain the future identity of his
own family. He drew on his own experience of recovering from repeated political catastrophes to set out an identity that would help the family to survive disordered times and maintain their status in society

Muddy waters: political tensions and identity in the writings of Xu Wei (1521-1593)
The late Ming artist and poet Xu Wei 徐渭 (1521-1593) is most well known for his self-representation as a cultured "mountain hermit" and "eccentric", pursuing the literary ideals of originality, simple language and direct emotional expression. His wild ink-brush paintings, mental instability, numerous suicide attempts and the murder of this third wife all helped to consolidate Xu's image as China's Van Gogh. However, later hagiographies of Xu as the "patron saint of eccentrics" have led to a one dimensional view of Xu. This thesis presents Xu as someone who explored and wrestled with different and sometimes contradictory self-representations against a thorny political and social backdrop. It moves away from Xu's "eccentric" persona, instead examining his writings within the political context of the 16th century. Against the backdrop of Mongol and pirate invasions, Xu's close friend Shen Lian was executed by the Chief Grand Secretary Yan Song and his clique. Yet only a month after his friend’s execution, Xu switched sides and worked as a ghost-writer for Hu Zongxian, a protégé of Yan Song. Yet with the fall of Yan Song in 1562 and the arrest of Hu Zongxian, this became an embarrassment for Xu. Fearing that he would be implicated with the Yan Song clique, Xu distanced himself from his flattering ghost-written poems. Overwhelmed by feelings of guilt, he explored the complexities of loyalty and identity in his poetry. Xu's career is representative of many Ming scholars who were frustrated by examination failure and the inability to find an official post. His literary ideals contradicted with lived reality. Xu is unique among Ming literati in voicing these contradictions

Testudinella zhujiangensis Wei, De Smet & Xu 2010 (Figs 6 C, 12–14) Redescription of trophi. Trophi malleoramate (Figs 12, 13). Frontal latero-ventral margins of rami with a large, quadratic and stout reinforced, caudally recurved alula (Figs 12–14: al). Median rami apophyses (Fig. 12 B: ra) weakly developed. Inner margins distal rami sections bearing 14–21 / 13–21 strongly webbed arched rami scleropili (Figs 12 B, 14 A: as). Frontal rami scleropili with fairly acute distal tip (Fig. 14 B: fs). Basal apophyses moderately developed (Fig. 13: ba). Fulcrum short with a distinct proximal opening frontally (Fig. 13: fo). Unci plates (Fig. 12 A: u) consist of 11–13 / 11–12 weakly curved and strongly webbed teeth. Each uncus has 3, occasionally 4, major teeth with moderately offset lanceolate heads. Minor teeth with lanceolate head bearing two minute lateral knobs at their base; the webbing almost extends up to the base of the heads. Crescent-shaped manubria are composed of a superimposed dorsal, median, ventral and small sub-ventral chamber (Fig. 12 B). Measurements. Trophi (N = 6): length × width 17.4–20.4 × 22.4–24.5 µm, ramus 10.7–12.1 µm, fulcrum 5.2– 6.1 µm, largest major tooth 10.0– 10.6 µm, manubrium 10.7–12.4 µm.Published as part of Wei, Nan, De, Willem H. & Xu, Runlin, 2011, Two new brackish-water species of Testudinella (Rotifera: Testudinellidae) from Qi'ao Island in the Pearl River estuary, China, with a key to marine and brackish-water Testudinella, pp. 41-56 in Zootaxa 3051 on page 51, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.20778
