Understanding of Road-Bioretention Strip Design and Improvement from Hydraulic Perspective
This study is to understand and quantify the hydraulic and hydrological performance of road bioretention facilities as well as the basic problems in urban drainage and road bioretention design. An open-source two-dimensional flow simulation program, FullSWOF_2D, which fully (Full) solves shallow water (SW) equations for overland flow (OF) and river flow, was updated and applied to this study. The particle tracking method (PTM) module was first added into FullSWOF_2D program to estimate the time of concentration (Tc) for impervious and pervious surfaces. The updated program FullSWOF-PTM was applied to 446 impervious modeling cases to simulate and calculate Tci of overland flow on impervious surfaces. Tci equation derived using PTM correlates well with Tci from other five published equations, which proves PTM can also be used to estimate Tcp of overland flow on pervious surfaces. Seven hundred fifty (750) pervious modeling cases were developed and simulated to explore the Tcp equation. A regression equation for Tcp was developed and has higher accuracy compared to Akan’s equation wide ranges of input parameters.
The FullSWOF_2D program was also revised to include 2D plane zones with different rainfall and infiltration parameters and a 2D-1D grate inlet flow interception module. The updated program called FullSWOF-ZG was tested with 20 locally depressed Texas type D curb inlet cases to simulate the inlet efficiency (Eci). It was also validated with 80 laboratory tests to simulate the curb inlet length of 100% interception (LT). These validation runs indicated that the FullSWOF-ZG program can be used to determine LT and Eci. One thousand (1000) undepressed curb inlet modeling cases of the road with 10 longitudinal slopes S0, 10 cross slopes Sx, and 10 upstream inflows Qin were established and modeled to determine LT. The second 1000 road modeling cases of undepressed curb inlet with 10 S0, 10 Sx, and 10 curb inlet opening lengths Lci and constant Qin (10 L/s) were established and modeled to determine Eci. Two new regression equations of LT and Eci were developed and compared with three previous methods, and the newly developed equations give more accurate estimations of LT and Eci over a wide range of input parameters and can be applied to design urban drainage and road bioretention facilities.
Twenty road-bioretention strip (RBS) modeling cases were designed based on the commonly used parameters and evaluated using FullSWOF-ZG. The simulation results were analyzed and demonstrated that the RBS’s hydrological performance was jointly influenced by several parameters such as road gemoetry, inlet design and efficiency, bioretention infiltration capacity, and overflow discharge capacity. When the road, curb inlet, and bioretention strip were modeled together as an integral system, it was found that the RBS’s curb inlet could be the bottleneck of RBS’s hydrologic performance and should be designed based on hydraulic calculation. The curb inlet and road grate inlet combination is necessary for continuous RBS because the road surface runoff could not be 100% intercepted by the curb inlet alone.
The FullSWOF-ZG program was applied to explore whether the deep cut over the curb and the road-curb cut inlets can improve the curb-inlet’s efficiency Eci. The deep-cut curb inlets were used in some retrofitting projects for improving Eci. However, the simulation results show that the Eci improvement of the deep cut over the curb inlet only is very small compared to corresponding undepressed curb inlet. The curb inlets with the road-curb deep cuts were also simulated, and it proved that the curb inlets with the road-cut width = 0.10 m could improve the efficiency compared to the undepressed curb inlets
The simulation of six phase PMSM taking iron loss into account
This paper studies the mathematical model considering iron loss in the d-q axis of six phase permanent magnetic synchronous motor (PMSM), through the expansion of Field-Oriented Control (FOC) based on three phase PMSM, the simulation model of six phase PMSM under environment of simulink7.0 is set up, which has fast dynamic response, high steady-state precision, and has no problems about current balance compared to dual three phase PMSM. In order to get an accurate simulation results, this mathematical model takes iron loss into account. The simulation results show that iron loss have bad effects on the performance of PMSM especially affect the dynamic response, and to reduce the bad effects, the resistance of the motor core should be increased. ? Energy-efficient seizure detection for wearable EEG
With the development of machine learning techniques, more and more classification models have been designed for seizure detection. The creation of these models has dramatically improved the convenience of epilepsy detection and made seizure labeling automation possible. However, many of the current researches in this field use EEG datasets with small data volumes and are mainly designed for scientific purposes, which do not have a good performance of actual medical data. Besides, most models require complex time-frequency domain transformation and feature extraction process, which result in low classification speed and makes it difficult to achieve real-time monitoring. Moreover, the excessive complexity also means higher power consumption, so most of these models cannot be implemented with wearable EEG devices. This thesis proposed a new seizure detection algorithm based on the bidirectional long short-term memory(BiLSTM) technique. The seizure detection function is achieved using time-domain features and LSTM networks. The preprocessing steps of this model are simple, and the complexity is low. Thus its operation speed is significantly improved compared to other traditional models. Also, this model is developed and tested based on TUH EEG corpus, which is an open-access dataset. Therefore, the results are directly comparable to others in the literature.Electrical Engineering | Circuits and System
Semiotics of Allegory: Queerness in Contemporary Taiwan and Hong Kong Novel and Cinema
This project offers the framework of “semiotics of allegory” as an alternative to Fredric Jameson’s national allegory for studying non-Western cultural products by emphasising their plural meanings of signs and the importance of situating their reading in production discourse. Against Confucianism and Buddhism, a study of the semiotics of allegory focuses on the relationship between queer representations and the space, the image, the music, and the myth in four cultural texts. They are Pai Hsien-yung’s 白先勇 novel Niezi (孽子, Crystal Boys, 1983), Chu T’ien-wen’s 朱天文 novel Huangren shouji (荒人手記, Notes of a Desolate Man, 1994), Tsai Ming-liang’s 蔡明亮 film Heliu (河流 The River, 1997), and Wong Kar-wai’s 王家衛 film Ceon gwong zaa sit (春光乍洩 Happy Together, 1997). This project adopts Shih Shu-mei’s framework of Sinophone studies, Chen Kuan-hsing’s inter- Asian studies in Asia as Method, and the theories of Judith Butler, Roland Barthes, and Rebecca Braun. Judith Butler’s notions of queer performativity in Bodies That Matter (1993) and alternative kinship in Antigone’s Claim (2000) and “Is Kinship Always Already Heterosexual?” (2002) are relevant to studying the gays’ and queers’ agency and family relationships. Roland Barthes’ view on the process of writing, reading, and meaning-making as non-binary acts of creativity in Writing Degree Zero (1953), The Neutral (2002), and Empire of Signs (1970) are useful for the re-interpretation of these Sinophone allegories. Also, his thoughts about the excess of meaning in “The Third Meaning” (1970), his five-code module about the structuring or structuration of writerly text in S/Z (1970), his idea of punctum that emphasises affects (emotions) in Camera Lucida (1980), and his neologism of ideology-as-mask in language as “myth” in Mythologies (1957) will also be deployed. Lastly, bringing back the author to life from the Barthesian notion of “Death of the Author” by borrowing the world authorship researcher Rebecca Braun’s Bourdieusian idea of emphasising the “collaboration” and “interaction” between author and other players in the cultural production field, this study calls for the interpretations of non-Western cultures to go beyond literalism, geopolitics, and nationalism
