Portfolio of recorded performances and exegesis: Messiaen’s musical language for the jazz pianist - an exploration through performance.
Moving beyond Gunther Schuller’s Third Stream amalgamation of classical and jazz, this study explores whether the musical language of Olivier Messiaen can make a valid contribution to jazz piano performance. Initially, my project sought to answer such questions as: What elements of the musical language of Messiaen already exist in the jazz vocabulary? Am I able to extend this further? What are the timbral structures and pianistic effects within Messiaen’s musical language? What will be the most effective application of Messiaen’s musical language to jazz piano performance? Endeavouring to answer the final question led me to consider such aspects as whether the project should be limited to quoting Messiaen motifs, arranging Messiaen melodies, replacing jazz harmonic structures on standards with examples from Messiaen’s musical language or whether it would be better to approach the research conceptually. The work of Hubert Nuss provided encouraging reassurance that this was not an impossible task. In order to articulate this conception, the initial challenge was to decide how the classical and jazz worlds might meet in a ‘Messiaen’ technique. The approach adopted was similar to that used for undergraduate jazz study, namely, immersion in the piano scores and recordings of Messiaen’s music as well as by live performances. This was followed by the development and assessment of a contrived approach when specific techniques, such as tonal colourings or harmonic structures, were developed through prepared exercises and consciously included in my performance. It was then compared with an intuitive approach when no such precise parameters were established. This submission consists of CD recordings of two public recitals and an exegesis. It documents the development of this Messiaen technique and discusses its application in my performances. It also demonstrates the ways that Messiaen’s musical language can be used within jazz piano performance to provide a colour that distinguishes jazz piano performance in a competitive field.Thesis (M.Mus.) -- University of Adelaide, Elder Conservatorium of Music, 201
The Impact of Ownership Structure on Firms Financial Performance - Evidence from Egyptian Listed Companies
This study examines internal corporate governance mechanisms in the Egyptian securities market and aims to shed new light on understanding how the structure of internal governance mechanisms differs from that of the extensively studied governance mechanisms in developed countries It investigates the impact of state ownership private ownership managerial ownership and employee association ownership on financial performance The author tests the hypotheses on a sample of 70 Egyptian firms over a six-year period from 2005 to 2010 The sample includes the most Egyptian active firms EGX 100 listed on the Egyptian stock exchange To investigate the influence of ownership structure on performance this study adopts the agency theory and the resource-based view to develop the hypotheses The analysis shows the important role of private ownership and managerial ownership in firm performance However state ownership has provided inconsistent results with the two performance measures For employee ownership the inconsistency across the two performance measures can be justified by the positive investors perception about this type of ownership as it evolved as consequences of the privatisati on programme for state-owned companies In conclusion the findings of the study help stimulate further research into identifying the contingency conditions upon which ownership structure affect firm performance The empirical results also have some managerial implications for reforming ownership structur

Board characteristics considered in this study include board size presence of outside directors CEO Chairman duality and gender diversity on the board Firm performance is measured by return on assets ROA and Tobin s Q This study includes firm age firm size and industry type as control variables The author tests the hypotheses on longitudinal sample of 70 firms over six-year period from 2005 until 2010 The sample includes the most active firms EGX 100 on the Egyptian stock exchange Empirical analysis is undertaken using pooled OLS and FGLS regressions after adopting the prerequisite tests and after detecting the absence of endogeneity between the variables This study makes a number of contributions to the existing literature First it provides a better understanding of the overall picture of Egypt s internal governance mechanisms The findings also contribute to our understanding of how corporate governance in Arab countries is practised in general and in Egypt in particular Second an important finding about Egyptian firms is that in the presence of the non-mandatory code the board of directors is not effective in implementing proper corporate governance practices This view is supported by the low level of compliance and the weak legal system Governance in Egyptian-listed firms is achieved spontaneously through other factors such as ownershi
A culture assessment of XYZ Manufacturing Company
Plan BWhat differentiates one successful, long-lasting company from another? The major distinguishing feature in comparing company’s success or non-success is in their most important competitive advantage and key ingredient to success – organizational culture. The long term success of companies has had more to do with company values, vision, and personal beliefs then market focus, competitive positioning, and resource advantage (Palmer, 1999). The purpose of this research study is to evaluate the current organizational culture of XYZ Manufacturing Company. The study assessed the organizational strengths and weaknesses, provided an aid for decision making during strategic planning, and established measures for benchmarking and evaluating change in the organization over time. In order to meet the goals of the study, data was gathered from 40 employees of the organization. The data was collected using a survey that was developed by the researcher through collaboration with the president of the organization and is based on the Denison Culture Model (2003). The survey was divided into four categories that included: Involvement, Business Principles, Working Relationships, and Employee Satisfaction and yielded a 77.5% response rate. Results of the survey are displayed into a circular model for ease of identifying and analyzing the areas of strength and concer

Deux ou trois choses que l'on sait de lui
Two or Three Things We Know About Him.
In 1977, Jacques Lefrere found an Iliad in Spanish which contained a statement of ownership by Isidore Ducasse, Count of Lautréamont, which reveals possession of another book. Its analysis, combined with a remarkable synthesis of the criticism, provides great insight in locating the work — and the author, to some degree.
The work of El-Mahdi Acherchour puzzles readers by his title, Lui, Le livre, and mostly by his complex aspect which reveals incontestably the desire of the author to transgress the novels traditional categories. His manner to mix different genres confers to his writing a kind of structure absolutely exploded. In our paper, we will try to understand how this generic strategy is used in this narrative and to explain what the author thinks according to this hybrid genre
