The main objective of this thesis is to obtain a wideband feeding system compatible with compact wideband antenna geometries with dual polarization properties. These feeding systems are designed according to the antenna performance and their structural nature. This thesis has two main goals that are presented in 4 chapters: First of all the dissertation investigates the planar wideband feeding systems to implement on desired dual polarized antenna geometries with these properties: the ability of field matching between an unbalanced and a balanced structure in wide frequency bandwidth, the ability of impedance transforming between the coaxial cable with 50 and a desired antenna input impedance in wide frequency bandwidth, integrated form to connect simply to planar antenna structures with simple design for fabrication, the ability of obtaining the dual polarization properties. Moreover the thesis investigates planar, low-profile and wideband antenna which can be used in dual polarization modes. The objective of this part of thesis is to design an antenna structure with these properties: wide impedance frequency bandwidth in UWB, dual polarization radiation with cross polarization level better than -10 dB in the entire frequency bandwidth, compact and integrated form useful for modern UWB application. Our investigations on compact wideband antenna show that in order to obtain a planar wideband antenna with dual polarization characteristics, the best candidates are sinuous antenna configuration and bow-tie antenna geometry.PARIS-Télécom ParisTech (751132302) / SudocSudocFranceF

Loss compensation in long-range dielectric loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides

    Get PDF
Loss compensation in long-range dielectric loaded surface plasmon polariton (LR-DLSPP) waveguides has been theoretically studied. Rare-earth-ion-doped potassium double tungstates have been proposed as gain materials because of the elevated gain that they can provide, together with a favorable refractive index. The effect of the waveguide geometry on loss compensation efficiency was thoroughly studied. A material gain as low as 12.5 dB/cm was found to suffice to achieve full loss compensation in an optimized structure

Ce travail a été financé par les agences de défense du Royaume Uni et de la France (DSTL et DGA respectivement), dans le cadre du projet MIMiCRA (Metamaterial Inspired Microwave Conformai Radar Antennas).Transformation Electromagnetics technique was introduced by J. B. Pendry and U. Leonahrdt in 2006 and it has become an emerging research field in physics and engineering in the last few years after the concept was validated experimentally with a invisibility cloak in microwave regime. This technique claims the possibility of an unprecedented technique to control electromagnetic waves interaction with engineered materials to achieve exotic electromagnetic behaviour. Despite some issues about narrow bandwidth or excessive dispersive losses related to the use of metamaterials for realization of TE devices, this technique caught the attention in many research fields (optics microwave, acoustics, etc). The final purpose of this these is to explore and propose applications of Transformation Electromagnetics in the antenna design field by using standard materials with the purpose of controlling the radiation pattern of an antenna. More precisely, three applications were explored : a fiat "parabolic reflector", an all-dielectric superstrate to control the half power beamwidth of a patch antenna and finally a superstrate that allows to control drastically the radiation pattern of a planar antenna This work was funded by France and UK defence agencies (DSTL and DGA respectively), within the framework of MIMiCRA project (Metamateriallnspired Microwave Conformai Radar Antennas)

Transformation Optics (TO) is a powerful electromagnetic design tool that enables the design of new devices such as the famous "invisibility cloak". This thesis is in direct continuation of that of M.D. Clemente Arenas (Application de la transformation d'espace à la conception d'antennes à diagramme de rayonnement contrôlé, 2014) and focuses on the use of the TO to drastically change radiation of a patch antenna. These sharp changes in radiation pattern are usually obtained using bulky superstrates made of metamaterials having exotic permeability and permittivity values. The objective of this thesis is to reduce the thickness of the superstrate and simplify the fabrication by enabling the use of standard dielectric materials. Thus, a patch antenna with realized gain of 7 dB is transformed, with the help of proposed superstrate, into an antenna having two lobes in the azimuth plane withrealized gain of 3.5 dB. The 0.12λ thick superstrate is designed using two standard dielectric materials only: Alumina (εr = 9.9) and FullCure (εr = 2.8), whereas the previous solution had variation in permittivity between 1 and 15 and in permeability between 0.3 and 3. Various degrees of freedom in the design allow adapting this solution to develop new superstrates for other applications: radiation pattern with HPBW greater than 180 ° in one plane, end-fire radiation pattern, etc. Target applications include those of aeronautics. Today, dozens of antennas on an aircraft are required to ensure the necessary communications links, identification, positioning and other purposes. The structure of the aircraft necessitates use multiple antennas to fulfill this mission, which are fixed and protrude on fuselage or wings. However, for an aircraft, these protuberances contribute to the aerodynamic drag, which results in higher fuel consumption. Therefore, the objective is to propose conformal antenna solutions with unconventional radiation pattern, which can be eventually integrated on fuselage or rudder. The concept is validated using a model made with a 3D printer and with the support of Airbus Group Innovation

This thesis aims to develop wideband antennas interrelated with a filter, which we have defined as versatile intricate antennas. The antenna is versatile as it provides wide bandwidth (more than one octave) and has the capability to generate two orthogonal polarizations. On the other hand, the filter for harmonic rejection and the matching network are integrated parts of the radiating element and give it the intricate character. The first study is concentrated on designing a dual polarized antenna with a wide stop filter integrated to the feeding network. This filter enables to reject harmonics and unwanted response. The complete structure is compact with a size of 0.9 λ0x0.9 λ0, λ0 being the free space wavelength at the lowest frequency. In order to improve the compactness of the whole system and to cover more standards, we present a single and dual polarized wideband Harmonic Suppressed Antenna (HSA). This work explores the different techniques used to design a HAS. The proposed antenna is simple in structure but versatile in applications. In this approach, radiating element, filter for harmonic rejection and matching network, which are traditionally separated circuits, are incorporated into a single compact unit. The total size of the antenna is 0.53 λ0x0.53λ0. The final chapter aims to study the previous intricate antenna with a new wideband Artificial Magnetic Conductor (AMC) structure as reflector in order to obtain a low profile and directive antenna

Strategies to Extend the Bandwidth of Wideband Antennas Over Artificial Magnetic Conductors

    No full text
International audienceFrom the two last decades, there has been a growing interest in applying artificial materials, known as Metamaterials to antennas. These materials derive their unique properties, not from their composition but from their structure. They are mostly composed of a periodic arrangement of materials, patterns. This spatial periodicity naturally induces a spectral selectivity. This narrow bandwidth can be used with benefit but is usually cited, in addition to losses, as one of the main limitations for metamaterials applications. The objective of this presentation is to demonstrate that it is possible to design wideband antennas with metamaterials. We are going to focus our attention to those, which can be applied to improve performance in terms of gain and to reduce the thickness of the overall antenna. Designing unidirectional antennas is required on many platforms in order to obtain outward radiation and preserve the interior of any electromagnetic pollution. For this, most common solutions are to place the antenna above a reflector or cavity filled with absorbing materials. The solution with absorbing cavity is simple but half of the radiation is lost and the cavity is sized at a quarter of a wavelength at the lowest operating frequency, which become very bulky for low frequency applications. Another efficient technique is to use a reflector made of a very good electrical conductor to retrieve the radiation lost in the previous solution. This technique is optimal at the middle of the bandwidth where a constructive interference phenomenon occurs by placing the reflector at a quarter wavelength (at center frequency) from the antenna. But this solution is inherently limited bandwidth and can rarely exceed the octave. It therefore appears difficult to design a unidirectional antenna achieving wide bandwidth and good compactness. Nevertheless, reducing the thickness is possible by using an AMC (Artificial Magnetic Conductors) which exhibit the perfect magnetic conductor (PMC) behavior, i.e. no phase shift at reflexion. It then becomes possible to position the antenna closest to this new reflector. The antenna is so unidirectional and thin. However obtaining PMC condition is possible but in a very limited frequency band and generally the AMC has a limited size composed with only few cells who are not all illuminated by a plane wave at normal incidence … In this talk, several strategies to exceed these limitations and keeping the wideband performance of antennas placed above these artificial magnetic conductors will be detailed. The presented results will be compared with the measurements in order to validate the different designs

Contribution to CRLH (Composite Right Left-Handed) based antennas design

Metamaterials are artificial structures with unusual electromagnetic properties. Composite Right-Left Handed (CRLH) radiating structures are very attractive antennas because of their scanning capability and wideband performances. However crlh lines must contain a large number of cells in order to have sufficient radiation efficiency. Due to the recurring request of having small antennas in new communication systems, new designs based on crlh structures must be found. The first objective of this thesis is to have full knowledge of electromagnetic properties of crlh structures. To take advantages of atypical electromagnetic behavior of CRLH structures, new CRLH based antennas designs are proposed. These new inspired antennas could produce different radiation patterns (with large beamwidth, narrow beam, double polarization). Analytical model, previously validated by electromagnetic simulator, is used to characterize the new proposed antennas
