    CrystDiff

    No full text
CrystDiff is an interactive program with a graphical user interface for the simulation of kinematical electron diffraction patterns in random orientations, taking into account the orientation relationship between the incident electron beam and crystal thickness. It accepts CIF files as input and a number of experimental parameters can be used in the calculation, including microscope accelerating voltage, camera length, beam divergence angle, crystal thickness and incident beam orientation. The simulated patterns are shown in the software and can be output as diffraction data.</p

    QFocus

    No full text
QFocus is an interactive program for structure projection reconstruction from through-focus series of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images taken with fixed focus steps. It is based on the contrast transfer function (CTF) theory for thin crystals. Aberration parameters such as defocus values and two-fold astigmatisms of the image series are determined using figure of phase similarity of reflections after applying CTF correction with test defocus values. CTF correction is applied to all images in the series and CTF-corrected images are combined to obtain a structure image. The program has a user-friendly graphical user interface and supports DigitalMicrograph (DM3), MRC and many other common image formats. The program runs on Windows.</p

    Rotation Electron Diffraction (RED) Software

RED Data Collection Program The software package contains two computer programs: RED data collection and RED data processing. The RED data collection program controls the transmission electron microscope and the camera. Electron beam tilts at a fine step (0.05-0.20 degrees) are combined with goniometer tilts at a coarse step (2.0-3.0 degrees) around a common tilt axis, which allows a fine relative tilt to be achieved between the electron beam and the crystal in a large tilt range. An electron diffraction (ED) frame is collected at each combination of beam tilt and goniometer tilt.   RED Data Processing Program The RED data processing program processes three-dimensional ED data generated by the RED data collection program or by other approaches. It includes shift correction of the ED frames, peak hunting for diffraction spots in individual ED frames and identification of these diffraction spots as reflections in three dimensions. Unit-cell parameters are determined from the positions of reflections in three-dimensional reciprocal space. All reflections are indexed, and finally a list with hkl indices and intensities is output. The data processing program also includes a visualizer to view and analyse three-dimensional reciprocal lattices reconstructed from the ED frames.</p

On the occasion of 120th Anniversary of Nobel Prize, the 2021 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was announced. German scientist Benjamin List and American scientist David Macmillan were awarded "for the development of asymmetric organocatalysis". Chemistry PhD student Ming Guo from the University of Helsinki was on site. After the announcement, our doctoral researcher Ming Guo from Prof. Timo Repo’s group in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Helsinki interviewed one member of the Nobel Chemistry Committee ZOU Xiaodong. Xiaodong Zou is a full professor and chair of the Inorganic and Structural Chemistry Unit and deputy head of the Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry, Stockholm University

Skin-Stiffener Separation in T-Stiffened Composite Specimens in Postbuckling Condition

    No full text
An experimental and numerical investigation was conducted to study the skin-stiffener separation of single T-shape stiffener specimens in postbuckling condition. Three specimens were manufactured with a centrally located Teflon insert, and were loaded in compression until collapse. Deformation patterns and separation evolution were monitored during the tests. To measure the full-field displacements and the strain distributions of the specimens, a digital image correlation (DIC) system was used. Skin-stiffener separation was observed and measured with an ultrasound system. Finite-element (FE) analyses were conducted to capture interlaminar damage mechanism based on the virtual crack closure technique. The numerical analysis accurately predicted the postbuckling deformation and the skin-stiffener separation behavior. The close correlation between the experimental and numerical results allows for further exploitation of the strength reserve in the postbuckling region and wider design options for the next generation of composite aircraft designs.</p
