Networked activists and the movement for democracy in Hong Kong

    No full text
The Umbrella Movement was arguably the largest and longest episode of collective contention in the history of Hong Kong, where political activism for democracy surged when a conservative reform to Hong Kong's electoral system was announced by the mainland Chinese government in late August 2014. Whereas Hong Kong lacks the tradition of radical protests, the Umbrella Movement enjoyed considerable public support, especially amongst the networked individuals whose everyday activities and social relations are intimately rooted in their new media usages. Drawing on in-depth interviews, online ethnography, and archival research, this research examines how the digitally-enabled individuals, who operated outside social movement organizations and political interest groups, came to engage in and sustain the Umbrella Movement. In particular, by integrating Actor-Network Theory and performance studies into social movement and Internet research, it submits a post-structuralist, practice-oriented approach to study how the individual citizens initiated their political activism, how they came together and acted in concert throughout the seventy-nine days, and how their movement involvement interacted with their everyday routines and relations, facilitated by the use of social media and digital technologies. Throughout this research, I contend that the digitally-enabled individuals' networked activism emerged and evolved as on-going processes of socio-material assemblages, in which the people's activist identity and political action arose within sets of situated, social-technological practices. This research has significant implications for the study of contemporary networked social movements. First, moving away from the common focus on the technical capacity of new media technology, it proposes the concept of hybrid contentious practices to look at how networked activists combine and switch between on- and offline spheres of action, as opposed to the general role of the Internet and its unidirectional impact on collective action. Second, this research orients our attention toward the larger historical-material contexts of and immediate encounters in protest movements, through which the individuals' political subjectivity and activity develop and alter. Lastly, this research transcends the long-standing scholarly divide by showing how people's contentious-political identity and action are simultaneously and mutually constitutive in the unfolding processes of performative doing.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2018-05-01The student, Tin Yuet Ting, accepted the attached license on 2016-04-19 at 11:54.The student, Tin Yuet Ting, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2016-04-19 at 12:02.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2016-04-19 at 13:52.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #9337 on 2016-07-07 at 13:50:06Made available in DSpace on 2016-07-07T20:27:45Z (GMT). Effects of a transitional home-based care program for stroke survivors in Harbin, China: a randomized controlled trial

    No full text
Background China has the biggest stroke burden in the world. Continued measures have been taken to enhance post-stroke rehabilitation management in the last two decades. The weak link is with home-based rehabilitation, with more attention and resources devoted to inpatient rehabilitation. Objective to address the service gap, this study tested a home-based transitional care model for stroke survivors. Methods a randomized controlled trial was conducted from February 2019 to May 2020 in Harbin, China, involving 116 patients with ischemic stroke. The intervention group participants (n = 58, 50%) received a 12-week home-based care program with components of transitional care measures and the national guidelines for facilitating patients to perform home-based exercises with continued monitoring and gradual progression. Control group participants received standard care including medication advice, rehabilitation exercise and one nurse-initiated follow-up call. Data were collected at baseline and after a 90-day (post-intervention) and a 180-day (post-intervention) follow-up. The primary outcome was quality of life (QOL), measured using the EuroQol-Five Dimension 5-Level scale (EQ-5D-5L). Results both intervention and control groups showed improvement in EQ-5D-5L from baseline to post-intervention (0.66 versus 0.83, P  Conclusions home-based transitional care was effective in improving QOL, symptoms, self-efficacy and activities of daily living.</p

Stony Brook University Author Perspectives on Article Processing Charges

    No full text
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of Stony Brook University (SBU) author perspectives on article processing charges (APCs). Publishing an article without restrictions, also known as open access publishing, can be a costly endeavor. Many publishers charge APCs ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars to publish an article without access restrictions. Authors who cannot obtain funding from grant agencies or their institution must pay APCs on their own. Do APCs fundamentally impact how authors choose their preferred publication venues? METHODS A cross-sectional survey was designed to learn SBU author perspectives on, and concerns about, APCs. RESULTS Responses mainly came from the sciences. Many SBU authors preferred to publish in a prestigious journal or journal of their choice rather than in an open access journal. Most authors published their articles in open access journals even if they were required to pay APCs. Many authors found that it was difficult finding funding for APCs and some expressed their concerns about the double charging practice. DISCUSSION SBU authors might believe that publishing in established and prestigious journals could secure their career’s advancement. Authors who chose to pay open access journals with APCs might be following publishing criteria. Libraries can encourage authors to negotiate with publishers to obtain a discount or waiver of APCs, when possible. Institutions should negotiate shifting journal subscription costs toward hybrid open access publishing. CONCLUSION Data will be used to inform how the SBU Libraries can help authors locate funding opportunities for APCs

Functionalization of artemisinin : new drugs for new purposes

Although artemisinin and its derivatives demonstrate promising screening results against malaria parasite, they still suffer from some drawbacks which render them far from ideal drugs. Cytotoxicity is one of the major problems. Furthermore, artemisinins are potential therapeutic agents against different pathogenic targets (e.g. cancer or tuberculosis). Tailored-made compounds for specific targeted pathogen are urgently needed. In this thesis, different novel derivatives are introduced. The initial idea, design and the screening are included. After the introduction in the first chapter, the second chapter starts to mention the synthesis of different glycosylated compounds which recognize the galectin receptors on cancer cells. The screening results of the N-glycosylated analogues are excellent. However, the compounds are not stable in acidic condition. Therefore, the C-glycosylated analogues were designed to overcome the problem. Two of the compounds were successfully made. The third chapter reveals the possibility of utilizing ‘Click reaction’ in artemisinin. Click chemistry is a modular approach that uses only the most practical and reliable chemical transformations. Its applications are increasingly found in all aspects of drug discovery, ranging from lead finding through combinatorial chemistry. Copper-catalyzed Alkyne-Azide Cycloaddition (CuAAC) is the most popular example of click reaction which using cuprous ion to accreleration Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition to give a single regioisomer. It was found that CuAAC was completely compatiable to artemisinin without reducing the peroxide bridge. Furthermore, both azide and alkynyl derivatives of artemisinin can be used as the scaffold. The fourth chapter discusses the use of novel co-factor model to design mechanism-based inhibitors of flavin cofactor. According to the model, artemisinin may perturb one of the important redox cycles, so as to exert oxidative stress on the parasite. Therefore, the inhibitors will bind tightly to the flavin cofactor of parasite after the artemisinin nucleus exert its function, causing malfunctioning of active site. These inhititors would be potential drugs for the pathogens which are vulnerable under oxidative condition like malaria parasites and mycobacterium. These derivatives were successfully made, and one candidate demonstrates an extraordinary activity against malaria at nanomolar scale.Chapter five involves the synthesis of artemisone homologues. Artemisone is a 10-amino-subsituted artemisinin derivative prepared by our group. Its Phase II data have already demonstrated that artemisone is curative when used in patients with non-severe malaria. The development of artemisone is continuing and the comparison between artesunate is going to be established for Phase II trials involving patients who do not respond to treatment with artesunate. But, artemisone is hydrolytic reactive under acidic condition and decompose at high temperature. These drawbacks prevent its usage in Africa where is humid and hot. Novel C-linked artemisone homologues were made. Surprisingly, the homologues was showed to have much lower activities compared to its parent compound which suggests the direct connection of C-10 and heteroatom is an important issue in potency.Last but not least, the last chapter reveals the design of new antibiotic as a mimic of platensimycin. Platensimycin is a novel class of antibiotic with unique mode of action by selectively inhibiting the β-ketoacyl-(acyl-carrier-protein (ACP)) synthase I/II (FabF/B) which are an essential component in fatty acid biosynthesis in Gram-positive bacteria. It was reported that the aromatic ring on platensimycin plays an important role in binding with protein on FabF/B so as to exert its effect. With the structural similarity between artemisinin and tetracyclic cage on platensimycin, the adduct of artemisinin and the aromatic ring which mimics the construction of platensimycin might be a useful compounds to target on FabF/B which is essential in bacterial growth. The antibiotic screening exhibited poor activities against different bacteria.</p

M.Phil.LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 belongs to the BiS2-based layered superconducting family discovered in 2012. It is structurally similar to highTc cuprates and iron-based superconductors. Ambient pressure grown single crystals have a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of ∼3 K. Tc can be further enhanced to ∼10 K when applying external hydrostatic pressure. A nearly two–dimensional like Fermi surface with a strong nesting wave vector at (π, π, 0) has been revealed by band structure calculations, hinting at highly anisotropic electronic and superconducting properties. In addition, two-gap superconductivity has been indirectly observed from various experimental results and supported by theoretical calculations. More interestingly, hidden spin polarization, manifested in local Rashba-Dresselhaus effect due to the local inversion symmetry breaking, was theoretically predicted in 2014, and was recently verified experimentally. Consequently, LaO0.5F0.5BiS2, which possesses all those intriguing superconducting features, can be served as a potential candidate for further investigations on unconventional superconducting states, as well as for future spintronics applications. In this project, ambient pressure grown single crystalline LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 has been meticulously studied from upper critical field Hc2 measurements. Temperature dependence of Hc2(T) as well as the field angle dependence of Hc2(θ) phase diagrams have been constructed, resulting in a high superconducting anisotropy parameter γ reaching∼16 on approaching 0 K. Furthermore, twogap superconductivity has been proposed based on two-gap model analysis. Impressively, H// c2(T) at low temperatures are found to exceed the Clogston-Chandrasekhar limit when external field is aligned along crystalline ab plane, which we have attributed to the Rashba-Dresselhaus effect. Our analyses on Hc2 phase diagrams conclude that LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 is a highly anisotropic two-gap Rashba-type spin-orbit coupled superconductor. To further investigate the pressure effect on the superconductivity of single crystalline LaO0.5F0.5BiS2, a micro-coil configuration in anvil cell was used for AC magnetic susceptibility measurements under pressure. Enhancement of Tc together with a significant amplification of phase transition magnitude were observed, implying that bulk superconductivity in LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 can be improved by physical pressure. 0.5 and 2 in title are subscript.Thesis M.Phil.
