Profiling and characterization of deep learning model inference on CPU

    No full text
With the rapid growth of deep learning models and higher expectations for their accuracy and throughput in real-world applications, the demand for profiling and characterizing model inference on different hardware/software stacks is significantly increased. As the model inference characterization on GPU has already been extensively studied, it is worth exploring how performance-enhancing libraries like Intel MKL-DNN help to boost the performance on Intel CPU. We develop a profiling mechanism to capture the MKL-DNN operation calls and formulate the tracing timeline with spans on the server. Through profiling and characterization that give insights into Intel MKL-DNN, we evaluate and demonstrate that the optimization techniques, including blocked memory layout, layers fusion, and low precision operation used in deep learning model inference, have accelerated the performance on the Intel CPU.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2022-05-01The student, Yanli Qian, accepted the attached license on 2020-04-28 at 07:31.The student, Yanli Qian, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2020-04-28 at 07:33.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2020-04-28 at 10:42.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #15088 on 2020-08-25 at 17:41:19Made available in DSpace on 2020-08-27T00:50:04Z (GMT). Integration of mid-infrared SOI photonics with microfluidics

    No full text
This work describes the integration of mid-infrared (MIR) silicon photonics with PDMS microfluidics to perform absorption spectroscopy of IPA-water solutions. The MIR spectral region contains strong absorption bands for many molecules, and photonic devices operating in the MIR can be used in many sensing applications. In this work a preliminary demonstration of a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) device is carried out in which the transmission spectra of different concentrations of water-IPA solutions are measured at wavelengths between 3.725 μm and 3.888 μm. A PDMS microfluidic channel is integrated with the waveguides in order to improve the repeatability of sample handing, reduce reagent volumes and prevent evaporation of the analyte. A microfluidic channel with 3000 x 100 μm cross-section and 30 mm length is bonded to a SOI chip comprising 500 nm thick rib waveguides and a 2 μm thick SiO2 top cladding isolating the waveguide mode from the analyte. Trenches were patterned into the SiO2 cladding to create sensing windows of varying lengths (10 μm to 3mm) along different waveguides. The devices were used to detect an expected IPA absorption peak at 3.77 μm, and concentration as low as 3% IPA in water (by volume) was detected. Further work will focus on increasing the sensitivity of the measurement by using increased interaction lengths, reduction of noise and instability, and on the detection of drugs using transmission measurements over a broader wavelength range. </p

Since the late 1980s, antique collecting has become a nationwide consumption craze among Chinese people from all walks of life. A set of cultural norms has emerged to distinguish different contemporary collectors from one another. The key of making such distinction lies in evaluating individuals’ quality of collection and authenticating skills, their "discerning eye" or yanli in Chinese. As a result, individuals are categorized into two groups: ordinary collectors with varying levels of yanli, and highly ranked antique authorities with professionally recognized yanli. What is the mechanism of such an evaluation? And what’s the nature of the categorization? This research explores the hierarchical structure of antique-collectors by examining the legitimization process of yanli. My fieldwork was conducted in a city in south China, focusing on the occupational paths of two individuals. Though lacking in higher education, they taught themselves knowledge of antiques and honed their authenticating skills through trading, and later showed their yanli to the public by putting on exhibitions, where a number of senior antique authorities were invited as special guests. It is in the presence of these senior authorities that the quality of exhibitions were affirmed and the yanli of my informants was professionally recognized. After staging a series of exhibitions from the late 1990s to the mid 2000s, they successfully managed to become antique authorities and eventually obtained the membership in the local elite class, meeting with politically powerful and with highly educated individuals as equals. I thus use their life stories to demonstrate the occupational mobility in the antiques field from 1990s to the present, showing how yanli has been legitimized and how the result of this legitimization fit into the picture of emerging class structure in post-socialist China.Detailed summary in vernacular field only.Detailed summary in vernacular field only.Detailed summary in vernacular field only.Detailed summary in vernacular field only.武洹宇.Parallel title from added title page.Thesis (Ph.D.) Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2015.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 268-277).Abstracts also in English.Wu Yuanyu

Divergent evolution of male-determining loci on proto-Y chromosomes of the housefly

    No full text
Abstract Houseflies provide a good experimental model to study the initial evolutionary stages of a primary sex-determining locus because they possess different recently evolved proto-Y chromosomes that contain male-determining loci ( M ) with the same male-determining gene, Mdmd . We investigate M -loci genomically and cytogenetically revealing distinct molecular architectures among M -loci. M on chromosome V ( M V ) has two intact Mdmd copies in a palindrome. M on chromosome III ( M III ) has tandem duplications containing 88 Mdmd copies (only one intact) and various repeats, including repeats that are XY-prevalent. M on chromosome II ( M II ) and the Y ( M Y ) share M III -like architecture, but with fewer repeats. M Y additionally shares M V -specific sequence arrangements. Based on these data and karyograms using two probes, one derives from M III and one Mdmd -specific, we infer evolutionary histories of polymorphic M -loci, which have arisen from unique translocations of Mdmd , embedded in larger DNA fragments, and diverged independently into regions of varying complexity

Balancing role of nitric oxide in complement-mediated activation of platelets from mCd59a and mCd59b double-knockout mice

    No full text
CD59 is a membrane protein inhibitor of the membrane attack complex (MAC) of complement. mCd59 knockout mice reportedly exhibit hemolytic anemia and platelet activation. This phenotype is comparable to the human hemolytic anemia known as paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), in which platelet activation and thrombosis play a critical pathogenic role. It has long been suspected but not formally demonstrated that both complement and nitric oxide (NO) contribute to PNH thrombosis. Using mCd59a and mCd59b double knockout mice (mCd59ab−/− mice) in complement sufficient (C3+/+) and deficient (C3−/−) backgrounds, we document that mCd59ab−/− platelets are sensitive to complement-mediated activation and provide evidence for possible in vivo platelet activation in mCd59ab−/− mice. Using a combination of L-NAME (a NO-synthase inhibitor) and NOC-18 or SNAP (NO-donors), we further demonstrate that NO regulates complement-mediated activation of platelets. These results indicate that the thrombotic diathesis of PNH patients could be due to a combination of increased complement-mediated platelet activation and reduced NO-bioavailability as a consequence of hemolysis. ABI4 Mediates Antagonistic Effects of Abscisic Acid and Gibberellins at Transcript and Protein Levels

    No full text
Abscisic acid (ABA) and gibberellins (GA) are plant hormones which antagonistically mediate numerous physiological processes, and their optimal balance is essential for normal plant development. However, the molecular mechanism underlying ABA and GA antagonism still needs to be determined. Here, we report that ABA- INSENSITIVE 4 (ABI4) is a central factor for GA/ABA homeostasis and antagonism in post-germination stages. ABI4 over-expression in Arabidopsis (OE-ABI4) leads to developmental defects including a decrease in plant height and poor seed production. The transcription of a key ABA biosynthetic gene, NCED6, and of a key GA catabolic gene, GA2ox7, is significantly enhanced by ABI4 over-expression. ABI4 activates NCED6 and GA2ox7 transcription by directly binding to the promoters, and genetic analysis revealed that mutation in these two genes partially rescues the dwarf phenotype of ABI4 overexpressing plants. Consistently, ABI4 overexpressing seedlings have a lower GA/ABA ratio compared to the wild type. We further show that ABA induces GA2ox7 transcription while GA represses NCED6 expression in an ABI4-dependent manner; and that ABA stabilizes the ABI4 protein, whereas GA promotes its degradation. Taken together, these results propose that ABA and GA antagonize each other by oppositely acting on ABI4 transcript and protein levels
