Abstract ChlA-F is a novel conformation-derivative of Cheliensisin A (Chel A), which is a new styryl-lactone isolated from Chinese Herb Goniothalamus cheliensis Huand shows potent antitumor potential effect both in vitro and in vivo. However, the anticancer activity and its potential mechanisms underlying ChlA-F action have never been explored. In present study, we evaluated the potency of ChlA-F on anchorage-independent growth and its association with autophagic responses in human high grade invasive bladder cancer cells. We found that ChlA-F significantly inhibited anchorage-independent growth of human bladder cancer cells by induction of autophagy in a sestrin2(SESN2)-dependent Fashion. Our results revealed that ChlA-F treatment specifically induced SESN2 expression via increasing its both gene transcription and mRNA stability. On the one hand, ChlA-F treatment markedly attenuated Dicer protein abundance, and in turn abolished miR-27a maturation and further relieved miR-27a directly binding to SESN2 mRNA 3’UTR, thereby promoting SESN2 mRNA stabilization. On the other hand,ChlA-F treatment promoted Sp1 abundance and consequently mediated SESN2 transcription. Moreover, either knockdown of Sp-1 or ectopic expression of miR-27a could abolish the autophagic response and reversed the inhibition of anchorage-independent growth in human bladder cancer cells. These results demonstrate that anticancer effect of ChlA-F is mediated by its activating autophagic pathway through promoting both SESN2 mRNA transcription and stabilization, which offers novel insights into the anticancer effect of ChlA-F on bladder cancer and provides a therapeutic alternative against human bladder cancer. 中国网络流行语在新加坡的传播与使用情况——以《咬文嚼字》年度十大流行语为例 = The spread and use of China's internet buzzwords in Singapore

    No full text
The development of the Internet and social media has created a new and distinct language form, Internet language. Internet buzzwords are a form of Internet language, which can be defined as a language form that is widely used and disseminated on the Internet during a certain period of time. They are extremely common in China, especially among the younger generation. Current research on Internet buzzwords focuses on China’s society, and many scholars have conducted research on the types and characteristics of Internet buzzwords, their dissemination and changes, and their usage. Very few researchers conducted surveys on Internet buzzwords outside of China or included middle-aged/elderly groups in their targeted groups. In Singapore, no scholars have conducted empirical research on the use of Internet buzzwords. The author hopes to fill up current research gaps in this area. Hence in this research, a questionnaire survey was conducted, targeting the young and middle-aged/elderly groups and discussing the spread and use of Internet buzzwords in Singapore and the attributing factors to related trends from the perspectives of age group and time period. This study found that respondents in both age groups have higher degree of cognition towards Internet buzzwords that are practical in terms of use and lower degree of cognition towards buzzwords related to China's policies. Respondents from both age groups also have higher degree of understanding towards buzzwords that come in simpler forms. In addition, the results of this study show a possible relationship between degree of cognition, understanding and usage of Internet buzzwords, that is, lower degree of cognition leads to lower degree of understanding, which in turn leads to lower usage. Moreover, the study also found that both age groups have a higher degree of cognition, understanding and usage of Internet buzzwords from the earlier period, and in these three aspects, the results from the youth group is shown to be higher than that of the middle-aged/elderly group. This study found that these phenomena may be related to network factors and contact with China’s media or Chinese relatives and friends. Also, both groups were found to have positive attitudes towards Internet buzzwords, but the youth group showed stronger optimism and support. The author hopes that this investigation and research can provide valuable references for the individual situations of Singaporean Internet buzzwords and contribute to the study of Singaporean language. High-entropy oxides (HEOs) can be well suited for lithium-ion battery anodes because of their multi-principal synergistic effect and good stability. The appropriate selection and combination of elements play a crucial role in designing conversion-type anode materials with outstanding electrochemical performance. In this study, we have successfully built a single-phase spinel-structured HEO material of (Mn0.23Fe0.23Co0.22Cr0.19Zn0.13)3O4 (HEO-MFCCZ). When the HEO-MFCCZ materials transform into a coexisting state of amorphous and nanocrystalline structures during the cycling process, the inert Zn element can initiate a pegging effect, causing enhanced stability. The transition also introduces many defect sites, effectively reducing the potential barrier for ion transport and accelerating ion transport. The increased electronic and ionic conductivities and pseudocapacitive contribution significantly enhance the rate performance. As a result, a unique and practical approach is provided for developing anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. No Full Tex

On the Gender Discrimination in English

    No full text
Language, as a tool for people’s daily communication, has no gender bias itself. With the development of society, the language has changed correspondingly. Language serve as the mirror of society, inevitably reflecting people’s minds or ideology as well as the culture and social conditions of a society. While in English, as the mother tongue of many western countries, amounts of gender discrimination expressions are embodied. To some extent, the gender bias toward females serves as the embodiment that females are considerably insignificant and share a low social status. In this paper, the author will analyse the phenomenon of gender discrimination in English language, and find the reason behind it to make people realize the importance of eliminating this phenomenon. If people keep using sexism language unconsciously, it will become the hindrance of the social harmony

Dual-functional gum arabic binder for silicon anodes in lithium ion batteries

    No full text
Si has attracted enormous research and manufacturing attention as an anode material for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) because of its high specifi c capacity. The lack of a low cost and effective mechanism to prevent the pulverization of Si electrodes during the lithiation/ delithiation process has been a major barrier in the mass production of Si anodes. Naturally abundant gum arabic (GA), composed of polysaccharides and glycoproteins, is applied as a dualfunction binder to address this dilemma. Firstly, the hydroxyl groups of the polysaccharide in GA are crucial in ensuring strong binding to Si. Secondly, similar to the function of fi ber in fi berreinforced concrete (FRC), the long chain glycoproteins provide further mechanical tolerance to dramatic volume expansion by Si nanoparticles. The resultant Si anodes present an outstanding capacity of ca. 2000 mAh/g at a 1 C rate and 1000 mAh/g at 2 C rate, respectively, throughout 500 cycles. Excellent long-term stability is demonstrated by the maintenance of 1000 mAh/g specifi c capacity at 1 C rate for over 1000 cycles. This low cost, naturally abundant and environmentally benign polymer is a promising binder for LIBs in the future.Griffith Sciences, Griffith School of EnvironmentNo Full Tex

新加坡华语口语重叠式研究 = A study of reduplication in spoken Singapore Mandarin

    No full text
Singapore Mandarin is, in many ways, different from the standard Modern Chinese, and reduplication is one of the aspects where Singapore Mandarin has exhibited its distinctiveness. Today, there exist many in-depth studies on reduplication in Modern Chinese. Yet, the study of reduplication in Singapore Mandarin paled in comparison. As such, this thesis aims to provide a systematic and thorough investigation on the scope, grammatical meaning and pragmatic functions of reduplications in Singapore Mandarin. As Singapore lacks database of spoken Singapore Mandarin, the author, along with 3 other undergraduates majoring in Chinese, constructed a corpus of spoken Singapore Mandarin together for the purpose of this study. In addition to the corpus data, a survey was also conducted to investigate the “VV yixia” structure that is exclusive to Singapore Mandarin. All in all, through this study, it was found that the unique forms of reduplication in Singapore Mandarin are mainly reduplicated verb, reduplicated adjective and reduplicated noun. Among the three, reduplicated adjective has the highest number of unique forms. It was also found that the unique reduplications were mostly influenced by the Hokkien dialect in Singapore.Bachelor of Art
