    Factorization of weakly compact operators between Banach spaces and Fréchet or (LB)-spaces

    [EN] In this note we show that weakly compact operators from a Banach space X into a complete (LB)-space E need not factorize through a reflexive Banach space. If E is a Fréchet space, then weakly compact operators from a Banach space X into E factorize through a reflexive Banach space. The factorization of operators from a Fréchet or a complete (LB)-space into a Banach space mapping bounded sets into relatively weakly compact sets is also investigated.The research of the first author was partially supported by MEC and FEDER Project MTM2010-15200 and by GV Project Prometeo/2008/101.     Physically inspired interactive music machines: making contemporary composition accessible?

    Much of what we might call "high-art music" occupies the difficult end of listening for contemporary audiences. Concepts such as pitch, meter and even musical instruments often have little to do with such music, where all sound is typically considered as possessing musical potential. As a result, such music can be challenging to educationalists, for students have few familiar pointers in discovering and understanding the gestures, relationships and structures in these works. This paper describes on-going projects at the University of Hertfordshire that adopt an approach of mapping interactions within visual spaces onto musical sound. These provide a causal explanation for the patterns and sequences heard, whilst incorporating web interoperability thus enabling potential for distance learning applications. While so far these have mainly driven pitch-based events using MIDI or audio files, it is hoped to extend the ideas using appropriate technology into fully developed composition tools, aiding the teaching of both appreciation/analysis and composition of contemporary music

    Photoelectro-chemical properties of anilino squaraine derivatives in LB films

    Photocurrent generation from Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) overlays on indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes, where the active components are 2,4-bis[4-(dibutylamino)-2-hydroxyphenyl]squaraine (1) and the unsubstituted analogue, 2,4-bis[4-(dibutylamino)phenyl]squaraine (2), have been investigated. Dye 1 shows improved behaviour compared with the latter and differences in performance are attributed to a modified aggregate structure, this being indicated by variations in the LB film spectra. The photocurrent generation is enhanced by the presence of electron accepters, e.g. N,N'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium diiodide (MV2+), but quenched by electron donors, e.g. hydroquinone (HQ).     Resources to help solve drug calculation problems

    This article is the third in a series of articles discussing drug calculations and discusses the resources, in terms of knowledge and skills, that are required to support the use of methods for solving calculation problems (Wright, 2009). The main resources discussed are clinical practice, numeracy knowledge (including number patterns), proportions and factors, and clinical tools such as syringes. These resources can be used as part of formal teaching sessions, or can be developed and practised by individual nurses to improve knowledge and confidence in solving drug calculations. The most important resource for developing drug calculation skills is regular exposure to drug calculations in clinical practice. Any drug calculation teaching and assessing, therefore must have clinical practice as the starting point, with numeracy knowledge not extracted and taught separately, but developed as a resource from within practice, for the purpose of supporting practice. Barbara Kasten is an Neo-Constructivist artist. The show was created by a grant through the Ohio Arts Council. A documentary was created in conjunction with the exhibition through the Telecommunications Center.
