On holographic defect entropy
We study a number of (3 + 1)- and (2 + 1)-dimensional defect and boundary conformal field theories holographically dual to supergravity theories. In all cases the defects or boundaries are planar, and the defects are codimension-one. Using holography, we compute the entanglement entropy of a (hemi-)spherical region centered on the defect (boundary). We define defect and boundary entropies from the entanglement entropy by an appropriate background subtraction. For some (3 + 1)-dimensional theories we find evidence that the defect/boundary entropy changes monotonically under certain renormalization group flows triggered by operators localized at the defect or boundary. This provides evidence that the g-theorem of (1 + 1)-dimensional field theories generalizes to higher dimensions
String/Gauge theory duality, integrable systems and applications
We calculate dispersion relations in different semiclassical limits of string theory, like in the “near-flat-space” limit which is an interpolating limit between the pp-wave and the giant magnon limit. We calculate the “near-flat-space” limit of strings in AdS4× CP3 which is dual to two Chern-Simons theories at level k and -k . We obtain the effective Lagrangian and give the Hamiltonian. We calculate the Lax pair for this background which proves integrability at the classical level. Another semiclassical limit is the “giant magnon” limit. We calculate dispersion relations for giant magnons and single spikes in a TsT deformed AdS4× CP3 background. We calculate 3-point correlation functions using the AdS/CFT duality. We obtain correlation functions of operators corresponding to two heavy string states and one light supergravity field. We state the dual gauge theory operators. Finally, we turn to Moonshine, a prosperous new research field, which connects two different areas of mathematics: group theory and the theory of modular forms
Moonshine, which famously started with John MacKays observation in 1978 connecting the Klein-J-function to the Monster group, connects seemingly unrelated fields of mathematics - modular objects (number theory) and sporadic groups (group theory). The precise analysis of the initial observation and its proof by Borcherds in 1992 has led to new concepts and insights both in mathematics and physics. The discovery of Mathieu moonshine by Eguchi, Ooguri and Tachikawa in 2010, linking the elliptic genus of K3 to the largest Mathieu group, brought renewed interest to the research field. Since then many new moonshine phenomena have been found shedding light on ever new surprising connections. In this thesis I search for new moonshine in different ways. I try to connect higher dimensional Calabi-Yau manifolds to moonshine by analysing their elliptic genera. I find some interesting initial results which however cease to hold under closer analysis. In a different approach I make use of heterotic-type II duality to relate Mathieu moonshine to the Gromov-Witten invariants of certain Calabi-Yau threefolds. In particular I study CHL orbifolds of E8 × E8 heterotic string compactifications on K3 × T2. In these models the twisted twining elliptic genera of K3 show up in the gravitational couplings and the vector moduli prepotential of the four dimensional effective theory. In the dual type II compactifications these couplings and the prepotential are governed by the topology (Gromov-Witten/Gopakumar-Vafa invariants) of the Calabi-Yau threefolds the theory is compactified on. In this way the Calabi-Yau manifolds get connected to Mathieu moonshine. For certain CHL orbifolds of the heterotic string one is able to find the dual Calabi-Yau manifolds, in some cases by direct construction
Automorphic forms in string theory : from moonshine to wall crossing
Summary: This thesis is devoted to the study of applications of automorphic forms ((mock) modular forms and (mock) Jacobi forms to moonshine phenomena, and to BPS wall crossing of in N = 4, d = 4 string theory. Moonshine phenomena are deep mathematical relations between vertex operator algebras, (mock) modular forms and sporadic groups that is manifest as the encoding of the dimension of irreducible representations of a sporadic group in the coefficients of the Fourier/character expansion of a (mock) modular form. This thesis is devoted partly to understand the nature of Mathieu moonshine (when the elliptic genus of the K3 surface expanded in characters of an N = (4,4) superconformal algebra has expansion coefficients that capture the dimensions of the irreducible representations of the largest Mathieu group, M24). The second part of this thesis is devoted to the exact computation of single center 1⁄4 BPS black hole degeneracies in N = 4, d=4 string compactification from 1⁄2 BPS states . 1⁄4 BPS states in these theories suffer from wall crossing effects. We derive a formula that computes 1⁄2 BPS instanton degeneracies by keeping tract of all wall crossings precisely and use that to build the full indexed partition function of 1⁄4 BPS states
Flux compactifications, dS vacua and the swampland
One of the main goals of the field of string phenomenology is to describe the properties of our spacetime in low-energy effective models related to and consistent with string theory. It is known from observations that our universe undergoes accelerated expansion, which can be described in Einstein’s theory of general relativity as a positive cosmological constant. Within string theory descriptions, this is realized by a scalar field with a positive value of its potential. Oftentimes, this is modeled by having the scalar at a stable, positive minimum. One then obtains a de Sitter spacetime. Constructions of de Sitter spaces from string theory are not straightforward and face many criticisms. In this thesis we address several aspects related to this topic. We investigate the description of general branes in supergravity and in particular describe the uplifting anti-D3-brane of the KKLT model, including all world volume fields. Additionally, we translate the type IIB based KKLT model into type IIA and introduce a mechanism that allows for the rapid construction of many de Sitter solutions. Related to this we investigate models based on twisted 7-tori from M-theory and their relation to type II supergravity. These setups can also yield de Sitter solutions using the same mass production mechanism. One of the more recent and serious claims against the construction of de Sitter spaces in string theory, the de Sitter swampland conjecture, is also addressed here. We highlight the difficulty of obtaining a stable, positive vacuum energy in classical type IIA flux compactifications and their reliance on O-plane sources. Then, we turn our attention to the conjecture itself. Contrary to the initial claim, we find many unstable de Sitter points in numerical searches and go on to present our own refined conjecture that differs in several key aspects from the refined version of the original conjecture
New de Sitter solutions of 10d type IIB supergravity
Abstract
We find and study 17 new de Sitter solutions of ten-dimensional (10d) type IIB supergravity with intersecting D5-branes and orientifold O5-planes, as well as a new Minkowski one. These solutions are obtained numerically on 6d group manifolds, the compactness of which is established for 4 of them. We show that all our de Sitter solutions are perturbatively unstable, using a restricted 4d effective theory of four scalar fields. We finally analyse whether our solutions can be promoted to classical string backgrounds. Several of them appear as good candidates, as they satisfy all requirements imposed so far.</jats:p
