“Une école des mœurs & de la morale”: How the Wouters Sisters made English Theater French
In their twelve-volume Traduction du théâtre anglois (Paris, 1784-1786), a collection of English plays including works by Jonson, Steele, Garrick, Sheridan and others, Cornélie Wouters, Baroness of Wasse, and her sister Marie Wouters argue that theater is “une école des mœurs & de la morale” essential for any civilized nation. They then explain the challenges facing translators who bring plays from one nation to another, commenting extensively on essential difference between the French and English “characters,” noting, for example, that the stolid English rely on theater to enliven them—“ce peuple naturellement sombre a besoin de spectacles extrêmement animés”—whereas “trop de force et d’énergie dans les caractères blesseroit la sensibilité” of the already-lively French. A close reading of their translation of David Garrick’s Miss in her Teens, however, shows the Wouters to be far less concerned with pleasing supposed French tastes than with creating a version of the play that is suitable for a school of manners and morals. Detailed examination of their lexical substitutions reveals that the Wouters systematically avoid coarse speech, make references to sexual desire less explicit, and minimize suggestions of violence, thereby reinscribing class, recasting characters, and thoroughly transforming the text. The Wouters thus comment on and critique their favorite English playwrights even as they use their work, and they offer modern readers valuable insight into aesthetic and moral ideals of the late eighteenth century and codes of conduct of French bourgeois society in the years leading up to the French Revolution.Dans leur Traduction du théâtre anglois en douze volumes (Paris, 1784-1786), un recueil comprenant, entre autres, des pièces de Jonson, Steele, Garrick et Sheridan, Cornélie Wouters, Baronne de Wasse, et sa sœur Marie Wouters déclarent que le théâtre est « une école des mœurs & de la morale » essentielle pour toute nation civilisée. Wouters, Cornélie and Marie in The Palgrave Encyclopedia of Romantic-Era Women\u27s Writing
Cornélie Wouters (1737–1802), also known as the Baroness of Vasse, and her sister Marie Wouters (1739–after 1802), both born in Brussels, had active literary careers in Paris in the 1780s and 1790s, separately and collaboratively, composing original works in French and translating a substantial corpus of theatre, history, and fiction from English to French. Notable publications include a twelve-volume history of English theatre, an allegorical fairy-tale version of the American Revolution, a lunar travel narrative, and a political pamphlet addressed to the French National Assembly arguing that the new republic should grant full rights to Jews. In all their works, the sisters take a special interest in relations between France and England, and, in some, they take an even more global view, as in Cornélie Wouters’ Le nouveau continent (1783), whose narrative stretches from the new United States to imperial Russia, and La Belle indienne (1798), the story of a girl from India raised by nobles in Paris during the reign of Louis XVI
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Project A4-ESR: OPTIMIZING COCHLEAR IMPLANT CODING STRATEGIES IN THE CONTEXT OF THE ELECTRODE-NEURAL INFORMATION BOTTLENECK
Because of the information bottle neck, it is impossible to match the resulting neural activity close to a normal ear. Therefore the approach of commercial coding strategies is to only transmit part of the auditory information. Channel selection is critical for performance. However, selecting the highest energy bands as - as is done in today's CIs - leads in noisy situation to loss of intelligibility (Hu and Loizou, 2008; Dawson et al., 2011). In this project we aim to better understand the impact of this information selection specifically for the default strategy used in Cochlear products (ACE) and to develop improved strategies.
