You may ask, “what is an extreme sport?” An extreme sport is one that involves more risk or injury than average sports. It is an adrenaline pumping activity. One of the more popular extreme sports at HJH is Skate Boarding. There are others such as snow boarding, mountain biking, wake boarding, and BMX’ing. Josh Gabrial is an extreme skate boarder. He skates at the new Lethbridge Skate Park on the north side of town. He also likes the area downtown around the Centre Place Mall. He looks for steps, small walls, ledges and hand railings to challenge his abilities. Most skaters spend as much time as they can practicing their sport... some up to 3 hours a day. At the first of the year Adam Lastiwka and some fellow skaters when to the School Board Office with a proposal for the HJH Skateboarders. They wanted a place to do what they do! They skate at lunch hours but had been kicked off every place they had tried to skate that was near the school. They proposed that theHJH skaters be allowed to use the area that leads up to the school board office parking lot just south of the school. They knew it was an acces road to the board office parking lot and they didn’t want to bother the board office employees. So they put together a list of rules and requests to make the area safe for skateboarding while not bothering people who needed acces to the building. The superidentent, Mr. M. Clewes accepted their proposal and now the HJH skaters have a place to practice their sport near the school. 44 X-Clountry W>nners Senior Boys 1. Joel Kotkas 9:44 2. Adam Hoof 10:21 3. Paige Atkinson (grade 9) won herself a GMC Jimmy for her efforts in the bi-annual HJH fund raiser. Bridge City Chrysler donated the used sport utility vehicle to Hamilton for the event. Students participating in the fund raiser found sponsors before they took an exam. Students then collected a net amount from their sponsors or an amount per question they correctly answered on the exam. This was a more creative and fun way of raising money than selling chocolates or candles. HJH had some great sponsors so we had some great prizes. The top fundraiser was allowed to pick for first prize and every consecutive finisher picked next. Among the prizes was a round-trip for four to Edmonton courtesy of Integra Air. Coca-Cola, meanwhile, donated money to the school to help pay for basketball uniforms and glass backboards. Cathy Frache (grade 7), was the top fund raiser with a total of 406.above:JulieXu...Singmeasong.right:SidEraischowindownonsomerice.48left:DerekPorterandMr.Kerrarethetoiletpaperprinces.49above:Allthebubblegumhatingteachersthrowitouttoallthebubblegumlovingstudents.left:Ms.Rollingsontryingtosurvivethesurvivorassembly.left:HowmuchmoneywillDavidPotvinwinatthedartboard?below:Frogsanyone?Mr.LoweandBobStrandquisteatingtotheirheartsdelight.andthewinnersare...abovetop:OurtotalprofitfromtheMilleniumFundraiser.above:Mrs.Hammond,Ms.Richardson,andMr.Kerrhanding406. above: Julie Xu... Once again, Wilson is tops! This year the Senior Girls' Volleyball team was coached by Mrs. Del bello. Their first tournament was the St. Francis Tournament where they placed third. The second tournament they were in was held here in Wilson and the team came in second. They had an extremely close game with Paterson in the finals. The Warqueens won most of the season's games. Nancy Voort comments, "I must have worked hard 'cause my knee pads had holes in them!" Maureen McAvoy This year the Senior Boys' Volleyball team played with a great deal of effort, but not always successfully. In the city league standings, the team had 4 wins and 4 losses. The conciliation round of the City Tournament was won by the boys, but they lost the semifinals. An overall third place was won by the 9 players. Although the girls won only 2 of their 6 season games, they learned a great deal about basketball and they had fun. One problem the team faced was not having enough practice time. Mr. Holt and Mr. Fekete, the coaches, comment, "It was a strong team, but the girls weren't serious enough about the game. If we'd had more practices, the team could have made it to the finals." The team looks forward to a better season next year. Scoref The Junior Boys' Basketball team won the championship making them the best in the city. Their record was 8 wins and no losses. This is the best record the Junior Boys' Basketball team has ever had in the city. The final game was played on February 28, at Wilson, against St. Francis. The top player of the game was Gord Bloudoff. "The team worked very hard to win the championship," commented Mr. Weitz, the coach. He says the most improved players were Jody Gilbert and Brad Londeau. If all the members of this team try out next year, the senior team will be the best! Wilson Junior High School Retrospect 1970

No full text
The annual publication of the students of Wilson Junior High School, Lethbridge, Alberta. (Volume. 1969-70)pdfthis retrospective overview of the Sixties has distilled into a single panoramic collage the input overload of images and events that traumatized and transformed7 / One of the rewards of teaching is witnessing youth growing into adulthood and knowing that you had a hand in the shaping of their lives. You will find out as you move along the path of life that the period you are now passing through is one of the most pleasant, Responsibilities are few and everything appears as viewed through rose-tinted glasses. We hope that you will make a sincere and honest attempt to gain all the education possible while in school. Nothing is more frustrating than to see a capable mind deteriorating through lack of use. If you gain a love of learning, the ability to think creatively, and a desire to work diligently, then you are on your way to a happy and successful life. But you will have to learn to discipline yourself. Temptations will be many. Life has its own problems and to meet them head on one cannot be too well prepared. Finally, having grown up many of you will be successful, for some of you fortune will be kind and a few will experience fame. a EVtUY Dai IS ft FRESH BtSINNINS, EVERY horn is the would maae new. I'm glad you got this far. If you have thumbed your way from the hack of the book you already know that we did not put everyone's name under the group pictures. We felt that in many cases this was not only a good way to mess up the pages but also an insult to your memory. We did not forget, however, that people have a habit of forgetting, thus, at the end of this year's RETROSPECT we have added the complete name list. We hope you like the book. We had fun doing it. An examination of the mature and role of fieldwork in the environmental education of primary phase pupils in Cleveland County

This thesis is concerned with two overlapping domains that constitute the main focus of the study, they are; i) the development of Environmental Education in the school curriculum; ii) the growth of fieldwork and its influence on Environmental Education. The study is divided into five main sections. Chapter one briefly explores the definition of Environmental Education, recognising the need to analyse the general stage upon which the specific examination of fieldwork may be presented. Here, organisational influences, from international to local, converge upon bioethical principles. The role of Environmental Education, emerging from this preliminary analysis, leads into chapter two's review of literature that traces its history and development. The third chapter examines the evolution of fieldwork in primary Environmental Education through its field and urban studies traditions. The role of fieldwork in the primary school curriculum at national level precedes consideration of the influence of local initiatives on its character and provision within Cleveland County. In chapter four the selection of an evaluation case-study methodology is defended, and a description presented of the design and administration of four progressively focusing stages of fieldwork. Following a parade of opportunity, generated by the collection of school documents, fieldwork proceeds through the employment of questionnaire, semi-structured interview and participant observation techniques. Analysis of the case-study fieldwork forms chapter five. The presentation of results extend through an examination of emerging patterns into a summary of the total investigation. The nature of environmental fieldwork, in Cleveland's primary-phase schools, is revealed as generally unstructured and heavily dependent upon individual teacher initiative, whilst its varied roles mainly relate to locational and managerial controls

Toward ecological literacy: A permaculture approach to junior secondary science

Environmental, economic, and social trends suggest the need for more sustainable ways of thinking and patterns of behavior. Such a shift would require humanity to function at high levels of ecological literacy, which relies on a certain amount of scientific literacy. However, troubling evidence indicates an international pattern of student disengagement with science at the secondary level. Evidence also suggests that it is difficult to integrate environmental or sustainability education at this level, both within New Zealand and elsewhere. This research was aimed at examining the use of a novel approach, using permaculture, in junior secondary science (years 9 and 10) to enhance students‘ ecological and scientific literacy, as well as their attitudes toward studying science in school. Permaculture is an ecological design system based on science and ethics. A permaculture approach to science education involves eco-design thinking as well as the use of local permaculture properties and practitioners, and the science behind common permaculture practices. The approach is also meant to be relevant and engaging, and to promote systems thinking. This study involved the design and delivery of an intervention based on permaculture principles to one year 10 science class in New Zealand. Research took the form of a naturalistic, interpretive, mixed methods case study, which included the use of questionnaires, interviews, and observations. Data collection focused on the impacts of a permaculture approach on the teaching and learning of science, on students‘ ecological literacy, and on students‘ attitudes toward learning science in school. Pre- and post-intervention questionnaires probed students‘ opinions on the environment, science, and learning science in school, and tested their sustainable thinking and systems thinking with concept mapping and SOLO Taxonomy exercises. Classroom observations took place over the course of 12 weeks, on average 3 days per week, totaling 31 days. Before and after some classroom visits I had informal conversations with the teacher, along with three formal interviews before, during and after the intervention. Three focus groups of students were interviewed immediately following the intervention. Findings show that a permaculture approach to junior secondary science can impact positively on students‘ understanding of science and sustainability, and may impact on their attitudes toward studying science in school. It also appeared to impact positively on the science teacher‘s attitude toward including sustainability in his teaching practice, and on his own sustainability learning. Regarding both students and teachers, a permaculture approach appears to have been effective to cultivate attitudes and trellis learning. The teacher and the students responded favorably to many aspects of the intervention, including the overall focus on the environment, the field trips, and some classroom learning activities. The teacher reported appreciating the way the intervention contextualized science with real world examples. Most students reported appreciating the experiential aspects of the intervention, as well as the relevance that a permaculture approach to science education provided. Findings indicate that advances in ecological and scientific literacy varied among students. Some students appeared: to improve their use of science and sustainability vocabulary; to become more aware of select socio-scientific issues; and, to better recognize scientific and ecological limits and possibilities. Some students also showed advances in sustainable thinking and systems thinking. Although many students expressed concern about issues such as pollution, wildlife, and genetic engineering – and prioritized protecting the environment over making money – there appeared to be a disconnect between these feelings and a sense of personal responsibility to act. Most students reported enjoying learning science with a focus on the environment, with one cohort indicating much greater enjoyment of the permaculture approach than their usual level of enjoyment of learning science in school. Trends in environmental degradation, population growth, energy inflation, and economic stagnation – especially pronounced since the beginning of this inquiry in 2008 – indicate that the world of the future will require ecologically literate citizens who can design and create truly sustainable systems for all human endeavors. Cultivating such citizens, and trellising their science and sustainability learning has implications for science education. This thesis identifies an innovative approach for junior secondary science in New Zealand that provides a way towards a more sustainable future

“Why MANtoring is not the solution. A Rebuttal to ‘The association between early career informal mentorship in academic collaborations and junior author performance.’”

The findings of AlShebli Makovi & Rahwan1 highlight an endemic problem in science: co-authoring with men is associated with greater numbers of citations for junior scientists than co-authoring with women. The reasons for this likely stem from a long history and culture in science where White, straight, cisgender men are the dominant force. Under the authors’ assumption that authorship is equal to mentorship (a notion we criticize below), the reported citation disparity by coauthor gender for junior scientists may simply reflect that under the current status quo there are more barriers for women to establish strong mentorship programs and secure resources to support their mentees compared to men. In other words, citation disparity is the problem, not the solution as proposed by the authors. We argue that the citation disparity is uncorrelated with mentorship and the quality of the publication. Unfortunately, AlShebli Makovi & Rahwan err in their publication in two ways: they define mentorship as co-authorship (albeit with conditions), and they prescribe the problem as a solution suggesting that junior scientists, especially women, ought to be mentored by men - a proposal we have aptly named “MANtoring”. These faulty interpretations and conclusions reveal a broader problem in scholarship: failure to critically examine structural biases and assumptions when evaluating and interpreting data showing disparity. Much work is needed to improve the culture of science and to provide a more fair and equitable environment for individuals of any background (women in this case, but a similar reasoning would apply to people historically marginalized based on gender, race, sexuality, class, and other dimensions) to thrive2. The AlShebli et al article is a wakeup call to authors in all disciplines to take greater care in interpreting and acting on their disparity data. Failure to do so could have catastrophic effects on science including the irony of exacerbating the very problems researchers are attempting to address

Taxonomic reassessment and phylogenetic placement of Cyrtodactylus phuketensis (Reptilia, Gekkonidae) based on morphological and molecular evidence

The taxonomy and phylogeny of the Cyrtodactylus pulchellus complex along the Thai-Malay Peninsular region has been the focus of many recent studies and has resulted in the recognition of 17 species. However, the majority of these studies were focused on Peninsular and insular Malaysia where there were specimens and genetic vouchers. The taxonomic status and phylogenetic relationships of the Thai species in this complex remain unresolved, due to the lack of genetic material of some species, especially C. phuketensis and C. macrotuberculatus from Thai populations. In this study, we investigated the phylogenetic relationship between C. phuketensis and its closely related species C. macrotuberculatus, using both morphometric and molecular data. Phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 (ND2) gene revealed that C. phuketensis is embedded within a C. macrotuberculatus clade with 1.45–4.20% (mean 2.63%) uncorrected pairwise sequence divergences. Morphological comparisons showed nearly identical measurements of C. phuketensis and C. macrotuberculatus and overlapping ranges in meristic characters. Based on these data, C. phuketensis is considered to be a variant of C. macrotuberculatus, thus rendering C. phuketensis a junior synonym of C. macrotuberculatus
