No full textPictorial representation is one of the core questions in aesthetics and philosophy of art. What is a picture? How do pictures represent things? This collection of specially commissioned chapters examines the influential thesis that the core of pictorial representation is not resemblance but 'seeing-in', in particular as found in the work of Richard Wollheim.
We can see a passing cloud as a rabbit, but we also see a rabbit in the clouds. 'Seeing-in' is an imaginative act of the kind employed by Leonardo’s pupils when he told them to see what they could - for example, battle scenes - in a wall of cracked plaster. This collection examines the idea of 'seeing-in' as it appears primarily in the work of Wollheim but also its origins in the work of Wittgenstein. An international roster of contributors examine topics such as the contrast between seeing-in and seeing-as; whether or in what sense Wollheim can be thought of as borrowing from Wittgenstein; the idea that all perception is conceptual or propositional; the metaphor of figure and ground and its relation to the notion of 'two-foldedness'; the importance in art of emotion and the imagination.

No full textRichard Wollheim was born in 1923 in London. His father was Eric Wollheim who was at the time the London manager for Diaghilev. His mother had been a Gaiety girl; she left the stage when she married. Wollheim was educated at Westminster School and then, after active service in the Second World War, he went to Oxford to complete degrees in history and PPE (politics, philosophy and economics). Despite relatively little study of the subject he was recruited by A. J. Ayer for the Philosophy Department at University College London. He remained there for thirty-three years, becoming Grote Professor in 1963. In 1983 he moved to America where he taught at various universities before returning to England shortly before his death in 2003

Also included is a letter about Rabbi Leo Lichtenberg, a friend of Norbert Wollheim in Berlin.Norbert Wollheim (1913-1999) was born in Berlin, on April 26, 1913. After the Kristallnacht he helped to arrange and escort transports that took Jewish children to Britain. Deported to the concentration camp in Auschwitz in 1943, he immigrated to the United States in 1952 and lived there until his death in March 1999. Surviving the concentration camp at Auschwitz, he successfully sued IG Farben for compensation of forced labor.The LBI Leo Baeck Collection, AR 66, holds photographs of Rabbi Baeck with Norbert Wollheim.digitize

No full textRichard Wollheim was formidable in many respects; he was culturally extremely sophisticated, socially well-connected, possessed a vast knowledge of both past and contemporary art, and had well-placed confidence in his own judgement. He published widely in philosophy, with work in political philosophy, the philosophy of mind, psychoanalysis, and ethics. This chapter considers his contribution under five headings: the ontology of art; painting as an art; representation, expression, and visual delight; interpretation; and his contribution to modernist art theory. Wollheim agrees that, in one sense, there is no physical object which is a plausible candidate to be a novel or to be a piece of music. He was committed to showing how claims made within criticism about art such as painting and sculpture could be true of a physical object. For Wollheim, representation and expressive properties are the fundamental perceptual properties that constitute the experience of pictures – along, of course, with the experience of visual delight
