Recognition of hand gestures with 3D, nonlinear arm movement

    No full text
Hand gesture is a useful modality of human interaction, In this paper, we propose an approach to recognition of space-time variable patterns of nonlinear arm movement and integration with other attributes to find the proper interpretation. At the encoding stage, we first extract the essential 2D trajectory from 3D arm movement by a plane fitting method. Pause information between the consecutive gestures is also modeled and integrated into the encoding. Codified information is then applied is a hidden Markov model (HMM) network which is responsible for segmentation and recognition of continuous arm movements. As a whole, three major attributes of hand gestures are processed in parallel and independently, followed by the inter-attribute communication for finding the proper interpretation. DEPTH FROM FOCUS USING A PYRAMID ARCHITECTURE

    No full text
A method is presented for depth recovery through the analysis of scene sharpness across changing focus position. Modeling a defocused image as the application of a low pass filter on a properly focused image of the same scene, we can compare the high spatial frequency content of regions in each image and determine the correct focus position. Recovering depth in this manner is inherently a local operation, and can be done efficiently using a pipelined image processor. Laplacian and Gaussian pyramids are used to calculate sharpness maps which are collected and compared to find the focus position that maximizes high spatial frequencies for each region

Entry: Visual Programming to Enhance Children's Computational Thinking

    No full text
This paper introduces Entry, a visual programming application which is developed to facilitate children's computational thinking. As an HTML5-based visual programming platform, it provides children and beginners with an integrated environment in which they not only learn programming in an easy and fun way but also create, post and share their own programs. This will enhance children's computational thinking and is expected to serve as an effective learning tool for the STEAM education. We have held a workshop with 16 elementary school teachers and conducted a preliminary survey to illuminate Entry's 1) potential educational implications on logical thinking, problem solving and creativity, and 2) applicability in the field of education. This paper is expected to contribute to future research on programming education and STEAM education programs for children

AGSphere: Multiresolution structure of directional relationship on surface parts

We present a new method in multiresolution rendering of a complex object. Our method uses viewer-centered features including the silhouette in generating multiresolution model. Because the silhouette of an object depends on the position of the viewer. the silhouette has difficulties in real-time generation. We propose the AGSphere for real-time management of the silhouette. The AGSphere easily identifies silhouette parts and manages it in multiresolution manner. The primary applicable feature of the AGSphere is the silhouette from the viewer, but we can also use the AGSphere for other directional features like light silhouette. In this paper, we show experimental results for the silhouette either from the viewer or the light. The efficiency of the proposed method is compared with other methods. we also propose new texture map generation method to use with the multiresolution geometry. Generated texture map has valid mapping function for the multiresolution geometry minimizing texture distortions
