Handbook of Airline Finance
cally, one of the elements that has contributed to the cyclical nature of the industry is long manufacturing lead times. Airlines typically ordered aircraft during a cyclical upturn but took delivery of the planes in less than ideal times. Permission-based separation logic for message-passing concurrency
We develop local reasoning techniques for message passing concurrent programs based on ideas from separation logics and resource usage analysis. We extend processes with permission-resources and define a reduction semantics for this extended language. This provides a foundation for interpreting separation formulas for message-passing concurrency. We also define a sound proof system permitting us to infer satisfaction compositionally using local, separation-based reasoning
European Union Foreign Direct Investment in China: Evidence from a Panel Study of EU Manufacturing Firms, 1998-2007
The paper examines determinants of the EU‘s FDI into the China by using a newly available Manufacturing firm-level data set for the period 1998-2007 from the State Statistical Bureau of China. The theoretical framework of the paper builds on Dunning's ownership–location–internalization (OLI) paradigm, incorporating the institutional determinants to test international production by EU firms in emerging market. The paper analyses recent trends and patterns of EU FDI and its firms‘ characteristics in China. This study applies both static and dynamic panel data approaches (fixed effects and GMM system estimators) to test the presence of agglomeration effect of past FDI. It finds that EU FDI in China is positively associated with export intensity and labour cost. However, technology and profitability of the firm show unexpected results, not lining with theory in the study. The results further suggest that locational factors with regard to macroeconomic and legal environment are also considered by EU firms when deciding on FDI in China. The findings have important implications for practitioners and policymaking
Reevaluating android permission gaps with static and dynamic analysis
Recent studies on the Android permission system have found that there exists a permission gap between the requested permissions and permissions actually used in an Android app. However, current approaches face some challenges when detecting such permission gaps in Android apps due to the limitation of static analysis techniques. This paper proposes a novel approach to detect permission gaps in Android apps and determine the precise set of permissions that an app needs to run correctly. Our approach includes a static analysis technique to extract permission usage information from API invocations, and a dynamic testing technique to test and monitor the runtime permission usage behaviors of apps. By combining static analysis and dynamic testing, our approach can detect significantly more permission usage information compared to static analysis, indicating that our approach could improve the detection accuracy and reduce the false positives in permission gap detection. We have implemented a prototype to study more than 1,000 popular apps from Google Play. The results show that our approach could detect on average 30% more permissions that are used in apps, while more than 8% of the overprivileged apps detected by previous approaches are false positives. ? 2015 IEEE.E
Are you sitting comfortably? The political economy of the body
The aim of this paper is to examine the relationship between the mass production of furniture in modern industrial societies and lower back pain (LBP). The latter has proven to be a major cost to health services and private industry throughout the industrialised world and now represents a global health issue as recent WHO reports on obesity and LBP reveal. Thus far there have been few co-ordinated attempts to deal with the causes of the problem through public policy. Drawing upon a range of sources in anthropology, health studies, politics and economics, the paper argues that this a modern social problem rooted in the contingent conjuncture of natural and social causal mechanisms. The key question it raises is: what are the appropriate mechanisms for addressing this problem? This paper develops an analysis rooted in libertarian social theory and argues that both the state and the capitalist market are flawed mechanisms for resolving this problem. There remains a fundamental dilemma for libertarians, however. Whilst the state and the market may well be flawed mechanisms, they are the dominant ones shaping global political economy. To what extent can libertarians work within these structures and remain committed to libertarian goals
The potential affordances of enterprise wikis for creating community in research networks
In this paper, we describe some of the affordances, (the specific enabling features or characteristics), of an enterprise wiki to meet the needs of a developing community of practice. The Social Innovation Network (SInet) is a nascent research network that spans the social sciences, education and commerce at the University of Wollongong. It will use the enterprise wiki software Confluence to assist in the development of communities of practice across its groups and subgroups. This paper, describes some of the features of the software and how it might be used to perform some of the common activities identified by Wenger (nd) as contributing to the development of community
