Tomatengen tegen bananenschimmel (interview met Pierre de Wit)
Er gloort hoop voor door schimmels geplaagde bananentelers. Wageningse onderzoekers hebben ontdekt dat een eiwit dat tomatenplanten resistent maakt tegen bladvlekkenziekte, mogelijk ook de banaan kan wapenen tegen de zwarte Sigatokaschimmel. Dat schrijven ze in PNAS (online op 5 april). Voor het onderzoek bundelden onderzoekers van de groepen van Gert Kema en Pierre de Wit hun krachten. Zij zijn experts op de gebieden van respectievelijk bananenschimmel Mycospaerella fijiensis en tomatenschimmel Cladosporium fulvu
