Letter of concern from Boris Drasin, President of the Jersey Homesteads Industrial Cooperative Association

    No full text
Jersey Homesteads (later renamed the Borough of Roosevelt) was established in the 1930s as an agro-industrial cooperative community. It was established specifically for urban Jewish garment workers, many of whome had emigrated from Europe. In this letter, Boris Drasin, a community leader who was the President of the Jersey Homesteads Industrial Cooperative Association, expresses his concerns to their management corporation (Consumers Wholesale Clothiers, Inc.) about how financial losses will impact the lives of Roosevelt's residents, three-fourths of whom depended on the garment factory for their livelihoods. He makes suggestions as to how the situation might be improved

Long-Run Development and the New Cultural Economics

    No full text
This paper reviews recent economics literature on culture, with an emphasis on its relation to the field of long-run growth and development. It examines the key issues debated in the new cultural economics: causal effects of culture on economic outcomes, the origins and social costs of culture, as well as cultural transmission, persistence, and change. Some of these topics are illustrated in application to the economic analysis of envy-related culture

Making Enterprise Information Systems Resilient Against Disruptive Events: A Conceptual View

    No full text
Enterprise Information Systems (EIS) are designed to deal with normal variability in their inputs and data. Empowered by CONTEXT-AWARENESS, some EIS even count on sensors and/or data analytics for capturing changes outside of the system. Nevertheless, context-awareness would often fail when EIS are affected by (large-scale) disruptive events, such as disasters, virus outbreaks, or military conflicts. Hence, in the current paper, we take a step forward, by considering context-awareness for disruptive events. We combine context-awareness with risk management techniques, such as FMECA and FTA, that are useful for defining and mitigating risk events. To avoid having to define the likelihood for such very-low-probability disruptive risks, we use CONSEQUENCE-BASED RISK MANAGEMENT rather than traditional risk management. We augment this approach with the context-awareness paradigm, delivering a contribution that is two-fold: (i) We propose context-awareness-related measures and consequence-based-risk-management-related measures, to address disruptive events; (ii) We reflect this in a method featuring the application of context-awareness and risk management for designing robust and resilient EIS.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Policy Analysi

Enforcing context-awareness and privacy-by-design in the specification of information systems

Networked physical devices, vehicles, home appliances, and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and connectivity, allow for run-time acquisition of user data. This in turn can enable information systems which capture the “current” user state and act accordingly. The use of this data would result in context-aware applications that get fueled by user data (and environmental data) to adapt their behavior. Yet the use of data is often restricted by privacy regulations and norms; for example, the location of a person cannot be shared without given consent. In this paper we propose a design approach that allows for weaving context-awareness and privacy-by-design into the specification of information systems. This is to be done since the very early stages of the software development, while the enterprise needs are captured (and understood) and the software features are specified on that basis. In addition to taking into account context-awareness and privacy-sensitivity these two aspects will be balanced, especially if they are conflicting. The presented approach extends the “Software Derived from Business Components” (SDBC) approach. We partially demonstrate our proposed way of modeling, by means of a case example featuring land border security. Our proposed way of modeling would allow developers to smoothly reflect context and privacy features in the application design, supported by methodological guidelines that span over the enterprise modeling and software specification. Those features are captured as technology-independent societal demands and are in the end reflected in technology-specific (software) solutions. Traceability between the two is possible as well as re-use of modeling constructs.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Information and Communication Technolog

Infrared Photometry of GEO Spacecraft with WISE

    No full text
NASA launched the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) into orbit on December 2009 with a mission to scan the entire sky in the infrared in four wavelength bands of 3.4, 4.6, 12, and 22 microns. WISE acquired data in the four bands for 10 months until the solid hydrogen cryogen was depleted and then proceeded to operate in the two short er wavelength bands for an additional four months in a Post-Cryo phase. In its trove of data, WISE captured many streaks that were artificial satellites in orbit around Earth. We have examined a subset of equatorial WISE images with |declination | 30 degrees in order to minimize contamination of the satellite streaks by stars in the galactic plane. At least one streak of the length appropriate for a GEO station-keeping satellite appears in over 10% of these images. In bands 1 through 3 (for images 1016x1016 in size), the streaks are approximately 100 pixels in length, and in band 4 (for images 508x508 in size), the streaks are approximately 50 pixels in length. Most, but not all, of these spacecraft appear in all 4 wavelength bands. Since WISE is in a Sun-synchronous orbit pointed approximately radially away from the Earth at all times, all observations of GEO objects were obtained at a solar phase angle of approximately 90 degrees. We report on the color distributions of these detections and interpret the colors and compare the spacecraft colors with colors of other astronomical objects such as stars, galaxies, and asteroids that have appeared in previously published works on WISE data

Boris Volkov. The Return of a Forgotten Name

    No full text
The article for the first time presents the work of the writer of the Eastern emigration Boris Nikolaevich Volkov (1894–1954). He was known to contemporaries for his publications in Harbin, Shanghai, Paris, Prague and other cities, where he was published under various pseudonyms. However, he is now a forgotten author. The article analyzes two short stories by Volkov: “The Steppe Crow” and “The Descendant of Genghis Khan” from the perspective of the writer’s autobiography, as well as in the light of the cultural traditions of the Mongols. The analysis involved the “Ancient Mongolian Legend of Genghis Khan”, which helps to reveal the semantic core of the plot motives of the works related to the traditions of steppe hospitality. The most exotic of them is hospitable heterism. The plots of both works are based on autobiographical events and refer to the early period of the writer’s life, when he was a Civil War participant on the side of Kolchak. Sent by the admiral to Mongolia to oppose Ungern’s Pan-Mongol campaign, Volkov was sentenced to death by the baron. So he was forced to flee to China. The Mongols helped him in his dangerous journey. The twists and turns of this adventurous part of the biography are reflected in the two works under analysis. In them, Volkov appears as a real artist, whose works replenish the arsenal of ethnographic literature. Thematically, both stories belong to the corpus of works that develop an international theme in Russian literature of the early twentieth century. The characters of the stories learn the wise and poetic attitude of the Mongols to the world, to life and death, based on ancient traditions and customs
