Market building, polity building, and community in the European Union. IHS Political Science Series 60, February 1999
The central argument detailed in the paper is that European integration will only become sustainable in the long run when the problem of developing a political community of European citizens is directly addressed. Contrasting the historical development of the West-European nation states with the conditions in the EC/EU the conclusion is drawn that a community of European citizens cannot and need not be based on a programme of state and nation building. Instead, a political community of European citizens could be founded on more recent political achievements and the integrative mechanisms of modern federally organized political systems in general: common citizenship, a democratic and participatory structure of governance, a more balanced distribution of labour between the national and the European level in substantial policy areas, combined with a pro-active strategy of protecting multinational diversity and tolerance
Derivations and KMS-Symmetric Quantum Markov Semigroups
We prove that the generator of the implementation of a KMS-symmetric
quantum Markov semigroup can be expressed as the square of a derivation with
values in a Hilbert bimodule, extending earlier results by Cipriani and
Sauvageot for tracially symmetric semigroups and the second-named author for
GNS-symmetric semigroups. This result hinges on the introduction of a new
completely positive map on the algebra of bounded operators on the GNS Hilbert
space. This transformation maps symmetric Markov operators to symmetric Markov
operators and is essential to obtain the required inner product on the Hilbert
bimodule.Comment: 35 pages, implemented small changes based on reviewers comments.

Ergodic decompositions of Dirichlet forms under order isomorphisms
We study ergodic decompositions of Dirichlet spaces under intertwining via unitary order isomorphisms. We show that the ergodic decomposition of a quasi-regular Dirichlet space is unique up to a unique isomorphism of the indexing space. Furthermore, every unitary order isomorphism intertwining two quasi-regular Dirichlet spaces is decomposable over their ergodic decompositions up to conjugation via an isomorphism of the corresponding indexing spaces

La rappresentazione commerciale della disabilità. Il caso Bebe Vio
Many researches have indicated that media representations of people with disabilities are often biased by underrepresentation, clichés, stereotypes and stigmatization. The way in which media present disabled athletes seems to convey the same biases. Bebe Vio is a Paralympic champion who has become famous in Italy so much as to become the testimonial of important TV commercials. The author analyse six of these commercial with a qualitative content analysis. The corpus shows as the commercial representation of Vio, always posed in “active” and “individualistic” way, is focused on the concealment of disability. The spectacularization of impairment and prostheses highlights how “mental strength” and the “magic value of technology” lead to a narrative overcoming of the disadvantage. In this way the stereotype, removed from the images, re-emerges implicitly as a basic element of the commercial message
An extremely rare association of Dyggve-Melchior-Clausen syndrome with mania: Coincidence or comorbidity
Dyggve-Melchior-Clausen syndrome is a progressive spondylo-epi-metaphyseal dysplasia associated with mental retardation, characterized by a triad of skeletal deformities (short trunk dwarfism, scoliosis, microcephaly, and limb deformities), facial dysmorphism, and intellectual disability. It an extremely rare condition. Till now, there was no evidence of association of Dyggve-Melchior-Clausen Syndrome with mood disorder. This case report highlights the extremely rare association of Dyggve-Melchior-Clausen syndrome with bipolar affective disorder. The patient had responded well to the combination of mood stabilizer and antipsychotics (sodium valproate and risperidone). To the best of author′s knowledge, this is the first case report depicting such association. Both Dyggve-Melchior-Clausen syndrome and bipolar affective disorder are associated with 18q chromosome. This background information raises the possibility of co-morbid association of two disorders rather than a chance association due to genetic linkage
Crafting the "Common Will": The IGC 1996 from an Austrian Perspective
Abstract: The paper analyses the negotiations that took place in the framework of the Intergovernmental Conference (IGC) 1996/97 leading to the modification and amendment of the founding treaties of the European communities. Taking the Austrian caseas an example the interaction between the various actors at the national and the international level is reconstructed. The author criticises the "intergovernmental approach" to the analysis of decision making mechanisms in the EU showing that the negotiations did not follow the logic of state power and multilateral bargaining but a "logic of mutual adaptation of expectations and positions". The IGC 1996/97 exemplifies the ongoing institutionalisation of peculiar decision making procedures and the proliferation of working methods that were developed in the various arenas of European negotiations. A key element of these methods is the importance of mediating roles like the role played by the Council presidency during the IGC. It is argued that the Amsterdam Treaty represents some sort of a "common will" rather than a diplomatic bargain between sovereign states. This is due to the particular setting of the IGC 1996/97 and organisational arrangements that undermine the boundaries between the intergovernmental and the supranational, the national and the international arena, between international and domestic negotiations, and between the national and the European interest.
Reporter and reconstructor (Melchior Wańkowicz's reports devoted World War II)
Autor przedstawia efekty działalności jednego z pionierów polskiego reportażu - Melchiora Wańkowicza. Skupia się na tekstach związanych z II wojną światową.
