Asset versus consumption poverty and poverty dynamics in the presence of multiple equilibria in rural Ethiopia
Get PDFEffective poverty reduction programs require careful measurement of poverty status. Several studies have shown conceptually that assets reflecting productive capacity form a more robust basis for identifying the poor than do flow variables such as expenditures or income. Nonetheless, little work has empirically compared poverty measurements based on assets and expenditures. This paper uses panel data from Ethiopia to generate an asset-based poverty classification scheme. Regression results are used to estimate an asset index and classify households into categories of structural poverty. Asset index dynamics are also explored to test for the existence of multiple asset index equilibria; evidence of potential poverty traps. Results provide evidence of multiple equilibria in the study sample as a whole as well as convergence at different levels over space, depending on commercialization opportunities and agroecological factors. The asset-based poverty classifications consistently predict future poverty status more accurately than do income-based measures, confirming that the asset-based measure could be used to more carefully target poverty interventions in rural areas and to more accurately assess the impact of those interventions.asset index, asset poverty, Commercialization, expenditures, income-based measures, index equilibria, Poverty dynamics, Poverty reduction, regression,

This is a biography which claims to provide the first inside and intimate glimpse of Nelson Rockefeller\u27s family background, schooling, business ventures and political career. Written in a cloying, adulatory tone the author goes to considerable lengths to demonstrate that Nelson Rockefeller has been unspoiled by money, that he is deeply religious, tolerant, ambitious and aggressive though democratic, that he is, in short, a regular fellow, -- as he manifested at Dartmouth, for example, by being as sloppy as anyone on campus . Morris discusses the Rockefeller children\u27s conscientious upbringing, their abstemious way of life; Nelson\u27s marriage to Mary Todhunter Clark -- at which time young Nelson was regarded by Philadelphia\u27s Main Liners as marrying into the Clark family; his early business experiments; his interest in South America and his appointment as Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs under FDR; his subsequent career in Washington and in San Francisco during the formation of the U N; the foundation of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund; and Nelson\u27s campaign for Governor of New York State. In an Appendix the author provides The Rockefeller Viewpoint on the management of government which is brief and sufficiently vague to alienate no one. Morris\u27s book is not the place to look for an objective appraisal of the tentative candidate. No full textWe analyze the implications of priority service (PS) on customers’ welfare. In monopoly markets, PS can often decrease consumer surplus and can even yield a loss of welfare to all consumers. This happens despite its efficiency gains, as monopolists levy in revenue more than the total efficiency gains. PS can increase consumer surplus if it expands the consumption coverage—that is, if it introduces new customers who would not purchase the service otherwise. In duopoly markets, the price competition over PS can be severely eroded. Under homogeneity, firms act as if they were monopolists serving half of the market
