KEEPING DAIRY PRODUCERS IN BUSINESS: THE EFFICACY OF RISK MANAGEMENT PORTFOLIO’S ABILITY TO PROVIDE FINANCIAL STABILITY

    No full text
Dairy production is one of the most significant segments of the agricultural industry in the United States providing for jobs, value added processing, and nutritious products to countless consumers. In Idaho, the dairy industry is equally impactful to the state’s agricultural industry. In a state where every dairy is family owned and agriculture is a lifestyle. Tragically, dairy farms in Idaho and nationwide are going out of business due to increasing pressures on profit margins on dairy farms, leading to consolidation in dairy farms. It is important to provide this industry the tools so that dairy operations have a greater ability to stay profitable and in business. Marketing risk (the risk of changing prices for a commodity) is one of the greatest factors influencing the dairy industry consolidation. Risk management tools are available for dairy farms of all sizes to use allowing for the offsetting of marketing risk; yet they are used at a rate fractional to that of other agricultural industries such as grains and livestock. This thesis details the current risk management tools and strategies available to the dairy industry. A panel of dairy risk management experts provided risk management potential strategies for dairy producers to be able to reduce margin risk. The efficacy of different risk management strategies was analyzed for potential use in production by applying each treatment to historical data. These treatments are compared to the control of no risk management practices. Performance was compared using stochastic dominance. The results of this work will benefit dairy farms of all sizes, especially smaller farms who might not have the time or resources to determine an optimal risk management strategy.masters, M.S., Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology (Applied Economics) -- University of Idaho - College of Graduate Studies, 2021-0

    Grace Aguilar’s historical romances

PhDMy dissertation looks critically at Grace Aguilar’s historical romance novels and short stories, and investigates English writers’ uses of history in early- to mid-nineteenth century fiction. Shifting the current critical emphasis on Aguilar’s Jewish texts, I have analyzed the ways in which Aguilar revises the genres of the national tale, the gothic romance, and the medieval romance in order to demonstrate her participation in the construction of nineteenth-century domestic values. In Chapter One, I introduce to critical debate Aguilar’s juvenilia, relying on unpublished manuscripts and novels published only in the twentieth century to establish the origins of Aguilar’s interest in history and historical writing. Locating Aguilar’s narrative style in the early nineteenth-century national tale, I show that as a child Aguilar envisioned the English and Scottish nations as a family, making domesticity both a private and a public—a female and a male—value. Chapter Two focuses on Aguilar’s use of history to express nineteenth-century domestic ideals in her version of the gothic romance. Deploying the setting of the Catholic Inquisition in Spain and Portugal, Aguilar writes gothic tales that unite Jewish and Protestant gender values. She makes heroic the Jewish female martyr to suggest not only that nineteenth-century Protestants and Jews share similar domestic principles, but also that Jewish women could be seen as ideal models for Protestant women. Finally, in Chapter Three I explore Aguilar’s participation in the nineteenth-century medievalist tradition by reflecting on her revision of nineteenth-century literary idealizations of the Middle Ages. In these short stories, Aguilar fictionalizes the sixteenth-century European chivalric ethos, looking critically at the role of women in court society at the end of the Middle Ages. Deploying the tropes prevalent in popular nineteenth-century anti-medievalist fiction, Aguilar debunks celebrations of the Middle Ages by showing how chivalry is antagonistic to nineteenth-century domesticity

Women and independence in the nineteenth century novel : a study of Austen, Trollope and James

'Women and independence in the nineteenth century novel : a study of Austen, Trollope and James', begins with the concept of independence and works through the three most common usages of the word. The first, financial independence (not needing to earn one's livelihood) appears to be a necessary prerequisite for the second and third forms of independence, although it is by no means an unequivocal good in any of the novels. The second, intellectual independence (not depending on others for one's opinion or conduct; unwilling to be under obligation to others), is a matter of asserting independence while employing terms which society recognizes. The third, of being independent, is exemplified by an inward struggle for a knowledge of self. In order to trace the development of the idea of self during the nineteenth century, I have chosen a group of novels which seem to be representative of the beginning, the middle, and the end of the period. Particular attention is given to the characterizations of Emma Woodhouse, Glencora Palliser, Isabel Archer, Milly Theale and Maggie Verver. Whereas in Jane Austen's novels the self has a definite shape which the heroine must discover, and in Anthony Trollope's novels the self (reflecting the idea of socially-determined man) must learn to accommodate social and political changes, in Henry James's novels the self determined by external manifestations (hollow man) is posed against the exercise of the free spirit or soul. Jane Austen's novels look backward, as she reacts against late eighteenth century romanticism, and forward, with the development of the heroine who exemplifies intellectual independence. Anthony Trollope's women characters are creatures of social and political adaptation; although they do not derive their reason for being from men, they must accommodate themselves to men's wishes. And Henry James looks backward, wistfully, at Austen's solid, comforting, innocent self and forward, despairingly, to the dark, unknowable self of the twentieth century

Red, white and blue highways: British travel writing and the American road trip in the late twentieth century

    No full text
This study locates late-twentieth-century roadlogues (nonfiction, prose accounts of American road trips) by British writers within the tradition of the postwar American highway narrative in travel writing, novels, and film. It exposes the discursive structures and textual constraints underlying seven case studies published in the 1990s by comparing them to texts from various genres in diachronic and synchronic contexts. It contributes to scholarship on the American highway narrative, which largely overlooks British texts. It complements research on British travel writing, which tends to be biased towards pre-twentieth-century texts by travellers whose culture is in a dominant relation to that of travellees. It adds to postcolonial studies through analysis of representations of the other where otherness is reduced and complicated by a history of cultural exchange. The methodology combines several approaches including discourse theory, discourse analysis, narrative theory, feminist criticism, and theories of tourism. Three main areas are considered: identity, in relation to nationality and gender; the road writer's gaze, with regard to vehicles and roads; and intertextuality, on the margins (in maps) and inside roadlogues (in direct and indirect allusions). The study concludes that contemporary British roadlogues are in what is almost a subordinate relation to American highway narratives, evidenced by extensive influence of American texts. However, this subordination is qualified by joint ownership of western and New World myths, vestiges of imperial superiority, and selective deference by British writers. The latter is demonstrated through a consumer approach to American culture afforded by the episodic structure of the road trip and encouraged by the niche-oriented nature of the current market for travel writing. While American writers regard roadscapes with imperial eyes and experience the road trip as a rite of passage, contemporary Britons generally engage in superficial role play and remain untransformed by American highways

TOM KARREN GYM FUND RAISING At the opening of the Tom Karren Gym last Friday, Dr. Alan Dudley expressed appreciation to all there who had donated and who had helped in any way to make the project a success. Many others, who were not there, also contributed, and a special thanks should be extended to them. It has taken a great deal of effort and sacrifice to complete this fine gym. The Cardston School Board should be given credit for their desire to see us have a first class school. We would also like to recognize and thank M.L.A. Jack Ady for his work behind the scenes in promoting and doing whatever he could to make sure Magrath received a first rate facility. Small name plates of doners have been put up on panels in the hallway of the new gym. If anyone notices a mistake or a name that has been left off please let either Wayne Harr ie or Jack Kearl know and the corrections will be made. Tax receipts will be issued to the donors at the beginning of the New Year by the School Board. The Board will also issue the receipts and turn them back to the Fund Raising Committee for distribution. Hopefully, they will be prepared, and sent by. January 31, 1990. When the fund raising started a minimum goal of 75,000 was set. Should the amount surpass that, the funds would all be used in the school to have an even better facility. We are happy to say that the goal was reached and significantly passed. It is hoped that the New Gym and total school facility is one that we will all be. proud of and one that the students and community will use for many years to come. Tom would be very pleased. PI3K activation in neural stem cells drives tumorigenesis which can be ameliorated by targeting the cAMP response element binding protein

    No full text
© The Author(s) 2018. Background. Hyperactivation of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) signaling is common in cancers, but the precise role of the pathway in glioma biology remains to be determined. Some understanding of PI3K signaling mechanisms in brain cancer comes from studies on neural stem/progenitor cells (NSPCs), where signals transmitted via the PI3K pathway cooperate with other intracellular pathways and downstream transcription factors to regulate critical cell functions. Methods. To investigate the role of the PI3K pathway in glioma initiation and development, we generated a mouse model targeting the inducible expression of a PIK3CAH1047A oncogenic mutant and deletion of the PI3K negative regulator, phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN), to NSPCs. Results. Expression of a Pik3caH1047A was sufficient to generate tumors with oligodendroglial features, but simultaneous loss of PTEN was required for the development of invasive, high-grade glioma. Pik3caH1047A-PTEN mutant NSPCs exhibited enhanced neurosphere formation which correlated with increased Wnt signaling, while loss of cAMP response element binding protein (CREB) in Pik3caH1047A-Pten mutant tumors led to longer symptom-free survival in mice. Conclusion. Taken together, our findings present a novel mouse model for glioma demonstrating that the PI3K pathway is important for initiation of tumorigenesis and that disruption of downstream CREB signaling attenuates tumor expansion

Self-identity and consumption : a study of consumer personality, brand personality, and brand relationship

    No full text
This thesis investigates the relationship between self-identity and consumption by discussing the conceptual and measurement issues of consumer personality, brand personality, and brand relationship. The investigation is based on the theories of personality, self-identity, and interpersonal relationship. The self-identity theories (Belk 1988; Cooley 1964; James 1890; Mead 1935) suggest that consumers may use brands to construct, maintain, and enhance their self-identities. Drawing from the literature of personality and self-identity, this thesis repositions the concept of personality for the context of consumption and refers it to self-identity (self-perception) rather than behaviour. This repositioning indicates that consumer personality and brand personality can be examined by the same personality concept. On the basis of the self-identity theories, a positive relationship is expected to exist between consumer personality and brand personality. Moreover, the interpersonal relationship theories (Aron et al. 1991; Rodin 1978; Thibaut and Kelley 1959) indicate that the relationship partners become a part of the self-identity in a close relationship. Therefore, it is hypothesised that the closer the brand personality and consumer personality perceived by the consumers (consumer-brand congruence), the better the brand relationship quality. This study applies a quasi-experiment from a field setting to examine the relationship among consumer personality, brand personality, and brand relationship. A 2 (high and low involvement) x 2 (high and low feeling) factorial design is featured to explore the role of involvement and feeling in the relationship of self-identity and consumption. A total number of 468 observations reveals that consumer and brand personality are strongly and positively related. The greater the consumer-brand congruence is, the better the brand relationship. Minimal moderating effects of involvement and feeling to the relationships between consumer personality and brand personality and between consumer-brand congruence and brand relationship quality are observed. These findings suggest that consumers use brands from various product categories in different situations to maintain their self-identities. The study attempts to make contributions on the theoretical, methodological, and managerial levels. Theoretically, it clarifies the concepts of consumer personality and brand personality, and reaffirms the concept of brand relationship. In this way, some measurement issues of self-identity and brand personality are resolved. The findings suggest that brand personality can be used as a tool to investigate global markets and to facilitate market segmentation and communication. Finally, the limitations of the thesis are recognised and directions for future research are offered

The English translation of seventeenth-century French lyric poetry and epigrams during the Caroline period

    No full text
This doctoral thesis is the first comprehensive study of contemporary English translations of French lyric poetry during the Caroline period. While there has been extensive study of translations from French literature of other genres, notably drama, translations of lyric poetry have been largely ignored. The thesis examines the translations within the context of literary and cultural trends in France and England during the seventeenth century. Differing cultural tendencies and reader expectations are evident both in the selection of particular poems for translation, and in the changes translators made to their source texts. Chapter one contains background information on the social and literary relations between France and England during the seventeenth century, and an overview of the social and political conditions in which poetry was written in each country. Chapter two investigates where and how translators obtained the texts of the poems they translated, and in particular the use of the recueils collectifs as sources for translations. Chapters three, four and five provide a thematic overview of the most significant and interesting translations. The themes chosen - eroticism, love and nature - constitute those most popular with translators, and the representation of these themes in both the original poems and the translations is closely connected to wider literary and cultural tendencies in both France and England. Having provided a thematic overview of the translations, chapters 6 and 7 examine some of the more technical and linguistic aspects of the practice of translating from contemporary French poetry in Caroline England. Chapter seven studies the translation of the French lyric voice, and the effects of this on the representation of themes, particularly love and nature. Chapter eight examines the English treatment of some aspects of seventeenth-century French prosody, placing these and the changes made by translators in the context of prosodic developments in both France and England. The conclusion highlights patterns identified in translators' handling of the source texts; these draw attention to the literary and cultural differences between France and England in the seventeenth century, and demonstrate that French poetry is altered in English translation to suit the tastes of translators and their intended English readership

We drew 1st blood 10 sec. into the 1st period then sunk the haft deeper 10 min later but those bushmen were quick to respond-at the end of 2 it was 4-4. Our rookie goalie David "Potvin" Harker was outstanding! On a point blankshot with on one but Mr. Freeze as his ally Harker dropped to his knees, did the butterfly better than Mark Spitz & stoned the shooter. Katby Ripley gave smelling salts to Cheryl Harker & Russ Barnett was heard quoting Winston Churchill. The Barnett Boys teamed up for 6 goals but in the 3rd period Mad Maxx strolled in wearing #11 & Tina Turner was singing die blues. Sabres 9-Mounties 6. Connor Barnett 4-0, Cole Barnett 2-0, Josh Rice 0-1, Cole Schneyder 0-1. Our next adventure was back to the plains of Abraham- Warner. Rumor had it that a team from Resolute Bay came there to play & their Eskimo coach froze to death & is buried in the rafters-I can attest to that. Despite die cold we were out to even the score. Cole Barnett unloaded 50* out & the goalie, goal, boards & Zambonie had to be replaced. Connor Barnett thought that he was a loom as he weaved the finest rug this side of Persia & padded it with a goaL Casey Hillmer went back to his roots in Scotland & found himself in a Rugby scrum & plowed one through the posts. The team proved to be the best in the city leage as it went through the season undefeated. A highlight of the season was playing and defeating Paterson's Senior Boys' team at the Paterson tournament. Once again, Wilson is tops! This year the Senior Girls' Volleyball team was coached by Mrs. Del bello. Their first tournament was the St. Francis Tournament where they placed third. The second tournament they were in was held here in Wilson and the team came in second. They had an extremely close game with Paterson in the finals. The Warqueens won most of the season's games. Nancy Voort comments, "I must have worked hard 'cause my knee pads had holes in them!" Maureen McAvoy This year the Senior Boys' Volleyball team played with a great deal of effort, but not always successfully. In the city league standings, the team had 4 wins and 4 losses. The conciliation round of the City Tournament was won by the boys, but they lost the semifinals. An overall third place was won by the 9 players. Although the girls won only 2 of their 6 season games, they learned a great deal about basketball and they had fun. One problem the team faced was not having enough practice time. Mr. Holt and Mr. Fekete, the coaches, comment, "It was a strong team, but the girls weren't serious enough about the game. If we'd had more practices, the team could have made it to the finals." The team looks forward to a better season next year. Scoref The Junior Boys' Basketball team won the championship making them the best in the city. Their record was 8 wins and no losses. This is the best record the Junior Boys' Basketball team has ever had in the city. The final game was played on February 28, at Wilson, against St. Francis. The top player of the game was Gord Bloudoff. "The team worked very hard to win the championship," commented Mr. Weitz, the coach. He says the most improved players were Jody Gilbert and Brad Londeau. If all the members of this team try out next year, the senior team will be the best!
