Weigh-in-Motion: Recent Developments in Europe
4th International Conference on Weigh-in-Motion - ICWIM4, Taipei, Taiwan, 20-23rd February 2005This paper provides a review of recent European developments in WIM. Pan-European and national projects are reported plus developments in sensor technologies and system design. Recent developments in multiple-sensor WIM systems are given particular attention. The coming of prototype fully-automatic overload systems is discussed and the technologies and legal framework necessary for their success. The commercialisation of Bridge WIM in Europe since the ICWIM3 is considered and the continued development of this technology towards almost maintenance-free systems. Assessment of the Accuracy and Classification of Weigh-in-Motion Systems: Part 2 European Specification
This is the second part of a two-part paper which addresses the issue of accuracy in weigh-in-motion (WIM) systems. The first part develops the statistical background necessary for any system of accuracy classification applied to a WIM system. This second part describes a draft European specification for the weigh-in-motion (WIM) of road vehicles, prepared by the COST 323 management committee. The philosophy behind the specification is outlined and the basic structure detailed. The specification gives an indication of what WIM accuracy might be achievable from sites with particular characteristics. There is a comprehensive review of methods of calibrating and testing WIM systems. Four types of calibration/test condition are described for tests using statically pre- or post-weighed vehicles. Accuracy classes are defined on the basis of the width of the confidence interval within which the measured results lie. Confidence interval widths arc specified for gross weights and weights of individual axles among other things. The percentage of test results which are required to fall within the confidence intervals is a function of the test conditions and the number of test runs. Jacob of Sarug's Homily on Tamar (Gen 38)
This small volume contains an edition (from Vatican ms. 117) of Jacob of Sarug’s homily on Tamar (420 lines long). The full title is “On Tamar and on the Mystery of the Church.” The biblical narrative on which the poem is based (Gen 38) gives Jacob the opportunity to discuss various women in the early part of biblical history and in Jesus’ lineage, as well as the fact that a woman who is called a prostitute is in that lineage. Jacob of Serugh's Homilies on the Spectacles of the Theatre
This fascinating volume contains excerpts from four otherwise unedited (and untranslated) homilies from Jacob of Sarug on the theatre. These homilies, extant only in a single manuscript (BM Add. 17158), which is unfortunately poorly preserved, are unique for the light they cast on the Greek theatre in the Byzantine period. In this article, originally published in Le Muséon 48 (1935), Moss gives a substantive introduction to the selections presented from these homilies, and then presents the texts in Syriac and in English translation. Scholars and readers interested in Syriac literature, and in Jacob of Sarug in particular, as well as students of the history of the theatre, will find this work of great interest.Translated into English from the Syriac text
Use of weigh-in-motion (WIM) data for site-specific LRFR bridge rating
6th International Conference on Weigh-in-Motion, ICWIM6, Dallas, 4-7 June, 2012In this paper, truck weigh-in-motion (WIM) data are used to develop live load factors for use on Alabama state-owned bridges. The factors are calibrated using the same statistical methods that were used in the original development of AASHTO’s Load and Resistance Factor Rating (LRFR) Manual. This paper describes the jurisdictional and enforcement characteristics in the state, the WIM data filtering, sorting, and quality control, as well as the calibration process. Large WIM data sets from five sites were used in the calibration and included different truck volumes, seasonal and directional variations, and WIM data collection windows. Certain MATLAB programs were developed in the live load factor calibration process. The resulting state-specific live load factors are smaller than those of LRFR manual and are recommended to the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) in rating their bridges more efficientlyDeposited by bulk importkpw26/2/1
Jacob Viner’s Reminiscences from the New Deal (February 11, 1953)
This paper presents and reproduces an unpublished oral history interview given by Jacob Viner in 1953. The interview released by Viner for the Columbia Oral History Project gives us a valuable opportunity to throw light on his advisory activity during the New Deal Era. In our introduction we attempt to make a critical appraisal of Viner's reminiscences and to state the contribution they can provide to our general knowledge of the period. In addition, we also attempt to find out some biographical and interpretative elements useful to understand Viner’s own vision and his contribution to important economic policy processes during the New Deal.
Jacob of Serugh on the Eucharist: Homilies 22 and 95
In the two articles reprinted here, Dom Hugh Connolly offers an English translation of two homilies from Jacob of Serugh dealing with the Eucharist. Connolly used the Syriac text of Bedjan’s edition of Jacob’s homilies (also available from Gorgias Press), homilies 22 and 95 in that edition. A short selection from homily 53 is also translated because of its related subject matter. Connolly gives an introduction to each homily and includes some explanatory notes to the texts. Investigation of Truck Weights and Dimensions Using WIM Data
AbstractThis paper presents a study carried out with extensive weigh-in-motion (WIM) data collected on the French main road network, involving 3 millions of trucks. The data were collected by three WIM stations located on highly trafficked highways and motorways, continuously over a whole year. The data were analyzed using statistical software developed by the US National Science Foundation.The trucks of the traffic flow were classified into almost 20 categories, depending on the silhouette, number and spacing of axles, body configuration (trailer/semi-trailer), type of axles (steering, driving or standard axle) and wheel or tire (single, twin, wide). The data were analyzed by category.The location of the centre of gravity of the payload was calculated and the variability of its abscissa along the vehicle was analyzed in each category. The loading patterns and behavior were analyzed and the results reported here for 5-axle articulated trucks and 2-axle rigid truck with 2-axle trailer.Then, the axle load distributions were analyzed by axle rank and truck category, and modeled with multimodal Gaussian probability distribution functions. The modes have been determined using a maximum of likelihood method. These modes are useful to design endurance tests of truck tires.These investigations provide a better knowledge about truck loading, overloads and truck aggressiveness on infrastructure, and may lead to optimization policies. In this case, the results are used directly in the domain of tyre optimization
