This exchange took place as part of Transpersonal: art and life directives, an international platform developed by Dr. Stephen Wilson that involves public lectures, education, exhibition making, design mediations and publishing in the field of contemporary art and theory. Gathered together in the Künstlerhaus office, this involved a conversation between Elizabeth A.Povinelli, Astrid Korporaal, Dr.Stephen Wilson, Fatima Hellberg, and Johanna Markert in Künstlerhaus Stuttgart, Germany

The SmartLab: experimental and environmental control and monitoring of the chemistry laboratory

    No full text
The work presented in this thesis focuses on acquisition of data such as environmental and experimental conditions and the control of experimental apparatus. A suite of software applications will be described which captures data from a standard data acquisition card, processes this and archives it in an appropriate repository. The software revolves around a central message broker, controlling the flow of messages between intercommunicating components. The automation section will focus on the control of many components of an experiment studying the air/liquid interface using the technique of second harmonic generation (SHG). Software will be described that can be used to controls actuators, laser sources and other hardware within the laboratory. This software will use the same message broker to send and receive messages relating to the devices they are controlling. These tools were used to run a number of SHG experiments studying the air/liquid interface of para-nitrophenol (PNP), benzo-15-crown-5 (B15C5) and 4'-nitrobenzo-15- crown-5 (NB15C5). The complete experimental process was automated and results made available through a web interface, allowing real-time monitoring and decision making of each experimen

Memories of the Future: On Countervision

What is a memory of the future? Is it a myth, a fiction of a severed arm, a post-human debate or a broken time machine? In an increasingly insecure future-world there is an urgency to consider and debate these questions. Memories of the Future: On Countervision addresses these concerns by speculating on the connections between memory and futurity in fields such as counter-histories, women’s studies, science fiction, art and design, technology, philosophy and politics. This book reveals how these subjects regenerate at the intersections of vision, counter-cultural production and the former present. The volume links the re-imaginings of memory into the present with topics such as the fever dream allegory of the adolescent social experience, soft technologies of future dress, reinventions of monetary exchange, rekindled subjectivities of school days, and technics and human progression. These countervisions argue against the homogenizing status quo of the present in order to challenge the customs, traditions and conventions of the past and propositions of the future

The smartlab: experimental and environmental control and monitoring of the chemistry laboratory

A suite of software applications was developed in order to provide functionality to monitor and record environmental and experimental data and the associated metadata. A piece of software developed by IBM [1] called the Microbroker was used as middleware to handle the flow of messages containing the monitored data using the MQ telemetry transport [2] (MQTT) format. Methods to send control commands were also employed where allowed by the experimental set up. The software was used to monitor a range of laboratories within the School of Chemistry at the University of Southampton. A number of repository solutions were implemented to build an understanding of what is required for a scalable and interoperable system

Selection and Characterization of Strains of Staphylococcus aureus Displaying Unusual Resistance to Aminoglycosides

    No full text
Studies concerning the effects of procedural variations on the activity of aminoglycosides have revealed that a single procedural change can significantly alter results, particularly in tests with Staphylococcus aureus (116,123). Variations in such factors as inoculum and type of medium used may at times also alter the clinical interpretation of results, and significant discrepancies between the minimal inhibitory concentrations and minimal bactericidal concentrations of aminoglycosides have been observed (62,90,116). These observations suggest the presence of a small subpopulation of cells within the sensitive parent strain which are more resistant to the effects of the aminoglycoside. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to (a) evaluate the bactericidal activity of aminoglycosides against Staphylococcus aureus by the use of kill curves (b) characterize the more resistant cells selected from strains of Staphylococcus aureus which appeared to be sensitive to aminoglycosides by minimal inhibitory concentration determinations, and (c) determine the prevalence of strains containing these more resistant cells.ProQuest Traditional Publishing Optio
