The annual publication of the students of Wilson Junior High School, Lethbridge, Alberta.(1968-69)pdfThe RETROSPECT 1968 -1969 WILSON JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Lethbridge, AlbertaTHIS YEARBOOK IS DEDICATED TO MISS VERNA GRAY Miss Gray first saw the light of day in the village of Wawanesa, Manitoba. While still a preschooler she and her family moved to Calgary and later to Lethbridge. She attended Westminster School and the Collegiate. After graduating from Grade Twelve she enrolled in a Homo Economics program at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. She interrupted her degree program to attend the Calgary Normal School. Her life of teaching began in Fleetwood School where she taught grades two. three and four. Some of her summers were spent attending summer school and culminated in the awarding of the degree of Bachelor of Education to her. Miss Gray then changed her subject field to that of Home Economics. She taught this to grades seven, eight and nine students in the gymnasium on the old Westminster School grounds. When the new Collegiate was built the program was moved into this building. Miss Gray had joined the staff of Hamilton but her classes were held in the high school. In 1954. one year oftor Wilson Junior High was built. Miss Gray joined their staff and has remained with us teaching in the same field. She is very much interested in travel and reading. She is noted for her diligence and fairness. The students and staff of Wilson wish her many more years of teaching and respectfully dedicate this yearbook to her.G. R CASTLES n 5C.. m a R. K. LANGLANDS n COPRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE Tis education forms the common mind. Just as the twig is bent, the tree’s inclined. Some of you may wonder why you must go lo school. You allend so that you will benefit to the greatest extent possible from living in such a great country as ours. Aristotle was once asked how educated men were superior to those uneducated. He replied, "As much as the living are to the dead." A great philosopher was quoted as saying, "\ consider a human soul without education like marble in the quarry, which shows none of its inherent beauties till the skill of the polisher brings out the colors, makes the surface shine, and discovers every ornamental cloud, spot and vein that runs through the body of it." One of the most valuable results of all education is the ability to make yourself do the things you have to do, when it ought to be done, whether you like it or not. This is one of the hardest things to do for man is a procrastinator - he likes to put oft doing things. We live in a changing world. Our school year will be altered next term. New methods of teaching are being tried. New courses are being introduced. We are progressing. We must adapt or go the way of prehistoric animals. You can't stop change, just as you can't put the toothpaste back into the tube. I wish all of you a very pleasant holiday and may your year be a successful one. The "olden age lies onward not behind The pathwai/ through the past has led us up The pathway through the future will lead us on and higher.H E MAJOR n i o F. J. UMERIS O CO. Mr. Umeris, our coach, did a great job in getting us ready for the championship game against Paterson. During the season, our team managed to win five games out of the eight, losing two games to Catholic Central and a tie with Paterson. We thus won the league championship and proceeded on to play the final game for the city championship, which we won 2-1 over Paterson. Many thanks go out to the team who did a job well along with Mr. Umeris doing the school a great deal of honor. Our junior team however did not do so well due to a bad first half season in which they lost three games, tied one, and managed to v/in one game. In the second half of the season they made a great comeback by winning three games and tying two. Making it to the finals, they played against Paterson losing the game by a score of 1-0.(maybe it was because they didn t have a team manager) Another fine coach, Mr. Cook, did a great job in preparing the team and just about pulling them through. It was a fine effort on the part of Mr. Cook and the Team. DRIVING INSTRUCTOR: Now, tell me. What would you do if your brakes suddenly failed to work? On Saturday March 1, 1969 a large contingent of athletes from the club participated in the Annual Lethbridge Herald Junior Indoor Track and Field Meet. Here we competed against athletes from Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Montana. Congratulations go out to Ken Shaskin who jumped 19T 62” *1. 4. in the long jump to establish a new provincial batam indoor record. Our next competition was our own school track meet which was held on Friday May 23 . Students placing first and second at our track meet went on to represent the school at the city track meet. Holly Tokariuk threw the shot put 2Sri" to break the previous mark of 26r 6". Cleo Psaltis bettered the record mark in the Midget Girls Triple Long Jump jumping 13 feet 10j inches better than the previous record of 13T 9i". Wendy Stegan took a full second off of the old record in the girls 440 open by coming in with a time of one minute 10.7 seconds. Brenda Schmidt won the 60 yard dash, the 100 yard dash, the running broad gump and came in second in the hop step and jump. Brenda as a result of these efforts was the individual winner in the junior girls division. Peter Shaw was the junior boys champion. Ken Shaskin captured the senior boys title. We also captured the Senior and Junior Team Championships. The school tied for first place standing in the meet.BAND - GRADES 8 & 9 front row: Don f^ Jocque! ne W.. Shoron G-. Rolhy D. Sports Fans' Evaluations of Sporting Code Innovations

    No full text
Today's professional sports are frequently evolving and changing their design, structure and format. Many such innovations have been spurred on by the opportunity to capitalise financially on new markets and increase profit. This study used both quantitative (survey) and qualitative (depth interviews) methods in order to examine fans' attitudes towards the current state of Rugby Union, Rugby League, Netball, Soccer and Cricket. The findings for Rugby Union concluded that the recent experimental law variations have succeeded in what they were introduced to do. Fans believe that Rugby is more exciting to watch than ever before and that it is now a faster and more attack-focused contest. Fans believe that Rugby League has improved following the introduction of the video referee and in particular by the use of two on-field referees. They believe that it is now a more exciting and faster game. Fans also believe that salary caps are good for Rugby League and help to increase competition and spread the wealth of talent among the teams. Netball fans are excited by possible new innovations and show support for the inclusion of power plays, two point goals, rolling substitutions and increased physical contact. Fans believe that Soccer needs to adopt technology in order to help its officials but they also admire the traditionalism of the code. Surprisingly, fans show support for increasing the sizes of Soccer‟s goals in order to make it easier for teams to score. Fans show support for Twenty20 cricket and seem undeterred by recent match fixing scandals. There is also evident support for the introduction of Beach Cricket to New Zealand. Analysing fans' attitudes towards professional sport's product innovations has led to a final implication and conclusion for the administrators and governing bodies of professional sport. That is, it would be wise to keep the traditional codes and their formats as traditional as possible. However, evolve the same sport in to a completely separate format in order to financially capitalise on different markets. Twenty20 cricket is a perfect example of this

Design of microcavity resonators for single-atom detection

    No full text
Whispering gallery modes of a microdisk resonator are useful for the optical detection of single rubidium and cesium atoms near the surface of a substrate. Light is coupled into two high-Q whispering-gallery modes of the disk which can provide attractive and/or repulsive potentials, respectively, via their evanescent fields. The sum potential, including van der Waals/Casimir-Polder surface forces, may be tuned to exhibit a minimum at distances on the order of 100nm from the disk surface. Simultaneously optically trapping and detecting is possible, with the back-action of an atom held in this trap on the light fields being sufficiently strong to provide a measurable effect. Atom trapping and detection depend on a variety of system parameters and experimental realizations differ for different atoms

The team proved to be the best in the city leage as it went through the season undefeated. A highlight of the season was playing and defeating Paterson's Senior Boys' team at the Paterson tournament. Once again, Wilson is tops! This year the Senior Girls' Volleyball team was coached by Mrs. Del bello. Their first tournament was the St. Francis Tournament where they placed third. The second tournament they were in was held here in Wilson and the team came in second. They had an extremely close game with Paterson in the finals. The Warqueens won most of the season's games. Nancy Voort comments, "I must have worked hard 'cause my knee pads had holes in them!" Maureen McAvoy This year the Senior Boys' Volleyball team played with a great deal of effort, but not always successfully. In the city league standings, the team had 4 wins and 4 losses. The conciliation round of the City Tournament was won by the boys, but they lost the semifinals. An overall third place was won by the 9 players. Although the girls won only 2 of their 6 season games, they learned a great deal about basketball and they had fun. One problem the team faced was not having enough practice time. Mr. Holt and Mr. Fekete, the coaches, comment, "It was a strong team, but the girls weren't serious enough about the game. If we'd had more practices, the team could have made it to the finals." The team looks forward to a better season next year. Scoref The Junior Boys' Basketball team won the championship making them the best in the city. Their record was 8 wins and no losses. This is the best record the Junior Boys' Basketball team has ever had in the city. The final game was played on February 28, at Wilson, against St. Francis. The top player of the game was Gord Bloudoff. "The team worked very hard to win the championship," commented Mr. Weitz, the coach. He says the most improved players were Jody Gilbert and Brad Londeau. If all the members of this team try out next year, the senior team will be the best! The annual publication of the students of Wilson Junior High School, Lethbridge, Alberta. (Volume. 1969-70)pdfthis retrospective overview of the Sixties has distilled into a single panoramic collage the input overload of images and events that traumatized and transformed7 / One of the rewards of teaching is witnessing youth growing into adulthood and knowing that you had a hand in the shaping of their lives. You will find out as you move along the path of life that the period you are now passing through is one of the most pleasant, Responsibilities are few and everything appears as viewed through rose-tinted glasses. We hope that you will make a sincere and honest attempt to gain all the education possible while in school. Nothing is more frustrating than to see a capable mind deteriorating through lack of use. If you gain a love of learning, the ability to think creatively, and a desire to work diligently, then you are on your way to a happy and successful life. But you will have to learn to discipline yourself. Temptations will be many. Life has its own problems and to meet them head on one cannot be too well prepared. Finally, having grown up many of you will be successful, for some of you fortune will be kind and a few will experience fame. a EVtUY Dai IS ft FRESH BtSINNINS, EVERY horn is the would maae new. I'm glad you got this far. If you have thumbed your way from the hack of the book you already know that we did not put everyone's name under the group pictures. We felt that in many cases this was not only a good way to mess up the pages but also an insult to your memory. We did not forget, however, that people have a habit of forgetting, thus, at the end of this year's RETROSPECT we have added the complete name list. We hope you like the book. We had fun doing it. State diagrams for bounded and unbounded linear operators

    No full text
Bibliography: pages 107-110.The theme of this thesis is the construction of state diagrams and their implications. The author generalises most of the theorems in Chapter II of Goldberg [Gl] by dropping the assumption that the doin.ain of the operator is dense in X . The author also presents the standard Taylor-Halberg-Goldberg state diagrams [Gl, 61, 66]. Chapters II and III deal with F₊- and F₋-operators, which are generalisations of the ф₊- and ф₋-operators in Banach spaces of Gokhberg-Krein [GK]. Examples are given of F₊- and F₋-operators. Also, in Chapter III, the main theorems needed to construct the state diagrams of Chapter IV are discussed. The state diagrams of Chapter IV are based on states corresponding to F₊- and F₋-operators; in addition state diagrams relating T and T˝ under the assumptions ϒ(T) > 0 and ϒ(T΄) > 0 are derived. Second adjoints are important in Tauberian Theory (see Cross [Cl]). Chapters I and IV are the main chapters. In Chapter I of this thesis the author modifies many of the proofs appearing in Goldberg [Gl), to take account of the new definition of the adjoint

The annual publication of the students of Wilson Junior High School, Lethbridge, Alberta. (Volume. 1981-82)pdfWILSON JUNIOR HIGH Lethbridge, Alberta 1982PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Of all the institutions in modern day society, schools may have the most important role in protecting our democratic way of life and in improving the state of the world. Education holds the key to solving mans’ problems and to guaranteeing health and security for future generations. The education you have received for the past decade has been controlled primarily by your parents and your teachers. In the years ahead, however, you will become more and more responsible for your own learning. You will decide the future direction of your education, you will have the freedom to choose your institutions of higher learning and ultimately select your own career. The staff of Wilson hope that we have provided you with a firm foundation for your future studies, we trust that you will eagerly accept the challenges of a higher education, and we wish you all the best in whatever career you should choose. 2 THANK YOU The 1981-82 yearbook staff would like to express their sincere thanks to the students and teachers for their cooperation and assistance in preparing the yearbook. Also many thanks to the advertisers who supported us throughout the year. A special thanks goes out to Mr. Michelsen, Mr. Matisz, and Mr. Hamilton for their support and contributions. Once again, thank you to everyone who helped make our yearbook a success in any-way. Thank-you Yearbook Staff 3 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Once again another school year has come to an end. Some of us will be going on to high school and others will be staying at Wilson. Something that was different in Wilson this year was the advisor classes. In the beginning not too many people liked it, but as the year progressed most everything worked out. Another change was that we had new and different clubs. These clubs were also quite successful. This year, all Wilson teams did very well. Congratulations to all the coaches and members of all the school teams. I would like to thank the Students’ Council for all their hard work and the dedication that they put into Council activities this year. Also, on behalf of the Students’ Council, I would like to thank the teachers, secretaries, Mr. Clewes and Mr. Walker for putting up with us this year. I would especially like to thank Mr. Michelsen for all the help and support he gave the Students’ Council. Most of all, I would like to thank you, for if it wasn’t for you, the student body, all our work would have been wasted. Once again, thanks for your support. Good luck to next year’s Students’ Council and thanks for making this year a success. Your president, Debbie Sheilds 4 GOOD — LUCK! 5 STAFF] My Teacher’s View Another year is drawing to an end, And the lights have begun dimming again. The rooms are silent; the hallways will soon be bare, And there’s no one left in the office chair. But even as the years fade and new horizens appear, It is upon a teacher’s face, you will sometimes find a remembering tear.............LANGUAGE Standing (I. to r.): Jackie Ridley Joyce Lawrence Carol Young Walis Allen Gay Kolb Thresa Ichino Wendy Pashuk Kneeling (I. to r.): Jim Hamilton Wes Stefan Lon Redpath Richard Powell SOCIAL Left to right: Jack Dergousoff Dale Wietz Jack Ramsy Bill Mokoski Rick Homan Brian Walker 8 MATH Standing: Ted Majors Len Robinson Richard Nelson Del Lowenberg Sitting: Oz Zimmerman Wendy Pashuk SCIENCE Back Row: Phil Lethan Bob McArdy Larry Thomsen Roy Michelsen Front Row: Len Robinson Terry Legg\_______\ Roy Michelsen Mai Clewes Brian Walker ADMINISTRATORS Left to Right: CUSTODIANS Ruth Pohl Barb Henderson Bill Drosdowech Josie Kroeker McKay Leishman Brian Trimble Rod McNeil Lou Fekete Walis Allen Elberta Wilson INDUSTRIAL ARTS and HOME EC. 10 \ \ V A I I 1 - ^ ... Effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation of various frequencies and intensities of energy expenditure

    No full text
The purpose o f this study was to determine the effects o f neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) o f various intensities (25, 50,75, and 100 mA) and frequencies (8, 12,20, 50 Hz) on energy expenditure o f the knee extensor muscles (KEM). Fourteen male university students between 20 and 24 years o f age were submitted to 5 min o f each intensity at each frequency during NMES on different days with the use o f a portable stimulator (Respond H, EMPI; impulse width of 300 microseconds; duty cycle: 55s on and 2s off) and adhesive electrodes (Pals Plus™, EMPI). Oxygen uptake was measured in the supine position at rest and during NMES o f both KEM. Energy expenditures (kcal. hr-1 .kg o f KEM -1) o f the four frequencies o f each intensity (mean : 25 mA= 1.8; 50 mA= 7.8; 75 mA= 21.6; 100 mA= 26.3) were not significantly different (p>0.05) and that of the different intensities of each frequency were significantly different (p<0.05- p0.05). The highest energy expenditure (28.1 kcal. hr-1 .kg o f KEM-1) was observed at a stimulation frequency o f 8 Hz (p>0.05) at an intensity o f 100 mA
