Behavioral simulation and synthesis of biological neuron systems using synthesizable VHDL

    No full text
Neurons are complex biological entities which form the basis of nervous systems. Insight can be gained into neuron behavior through the use of computer models and as a result many such models have been developed. However, there exists a trade-off between biological accuracy and simulation time with the most realistic results requiring extensive computation. To address this issue, a novel approach is described in this paper that allows complex models of real biological systems to be simulated at a speed greater than real time and with excellent accuracy. The approach is based on a specially developed neuron model VHDL library which allows complex neuron systems to be implemented on field programmable gate array (FPGA) hardware. The locomotion system of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is used as a case study and the measured results show that the real time FPGA based implementation performs 288 times faster than traditional ModelSim simulations for the same accuracy

Dynamic Electrical-Magnetic-Thermal Simulation of Magnetic Components

    No full text
This paper describes how the modeling and simulation of electro-magnetic devices can be extended to include dynamic thermal effects. The power generated by hysteresis inside ferrite cores is connected to a thermal model of the core material. The thermal conduction of the core material is modeled as is the convection of thermal energy from the core to the surrounding environment. The effective temperature change inside the core is used to modify the parameters of the core material model to accurately reflect the dynamic performance of the device at all temperatures. The electrical circuit, magnetic material and thermal networks are all modeled concurrently in the time domain to allow dynamic interactions across all three domains

Monetizing IMS-based IPTV through personalized advertising

    No full text
The adoption of the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) has faced a number of challenges. Furthermore, countries with developing infrastructure face additional difficulties. It is important for such countries to overcome these obstacles in order to adopt Next Generation Network (NGN) architectures and compete globally with operators offering IMS services. Funding the deployment of NGNs is a major hurdle for developing countries. Investors need a guarantee of returns within a particular timeframe. However, the declining Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) and the lack of a killer application for the IMS inhibit this. To overcome these challenges, this paper proposes a personalized advertising system for IMS-based IPTV to generate revenue based on marketing and incentivize IMS roll out for telcos. Furthermore, the system is integrated with the IMS charging framework to reward users for viewing advertisements

Improved optimization strategy for irradiance equalization in dynamic photovoltaic arrays

    No full text
This paper proposes an improved strategy for the optimization of dynamic photovoltaic arrays (DPVA) utilizing the ‘irradiance equalization’ reconfiguration strategy. This type of reconfigurable array is already very robust as it amalgamates the flexibility of dynamic reconfiguration with the averaging ability of Total Cross Tied (TCT) array architecture. This paper identifies four areas to further increase the power yield and significantly reduce the time for a return on investment. Results indicate potential efficiency improvements of more than 10% in some cases, and between 4-10% across a number of random and abrupt shading conditions. As in any DPVA system the proposed approaches require additional hardware and advanced control algorithms compared to a static PV array, but anyone implementing a dynamic array has already committed themselves to including the majority of this infrastructure. This investigation supports the idea of a fully dynamic IEq-DPVA with the ability to resize its array dimensions while implementing a rapid sorting algorithm based on information gathered using a novel precision irradiance profiling technique
