Meal Boxes and their Impact on the Sociology of the Meal

    No full text
In this project I have used Georg Simmels Soziologie der Mahlzeit to describe the social condition of gathering for a meal. The social meal lifts the individual transformation of food to energy, to a symbolic social event, which offers more than satisfying an individual need. I use this knowledge to describe how meal boxes, Måltidskasser, enables and expands the social conduct of joining in a meal. With Pierre Bourdieus reflexive sociology, I make use of habitus and capital theory, and combine qualitative and quantitative analysis in the form of an interview and a questionnaire.I find that in order to gain from the use of meal boxes, the household must have the need and opportunity to trade economic capital to symbolic capital, in the form of time or a surplus of energy, possibly both. Especially families with children, fall under this category. Lifting the basic need to eat, to a social event, is enhanced by the opportunity to use a service, which frees time and energy. Potentially, it even makes it possible to extend the sociality of the meal to ordering and cooking. A part of the responsibility is outsourced to a third party, which offers time, surplus of energy, and a decline in conflict - thus, enables further socializing. In this project I have used Georg Simmels Soziologie der Mahlzeit to describe the social condition of gathering for a meal. This paper examines stress as a modern phenomenon. Its aim is to epistemically break with the typically explanation of stress as an individual problem and the dominating neoliberal structures of society. According to a survey done by the University of Copenhagen, law school students experience a lot of stress in everyday life and in periods of examination. Therefore this group is chosen as an exemplifying case. Using Pierre Bourdieu as theoretician it is first examined how these students experience and explain stress related to their studies. Secondly it is explained how these experiences and explanations is related to the neoliberal structures of society. The paper finds that it is not the individual, but the neoliberal structures of society that creates suffering for the students. The suffering is caused by the ideas of neoliberalism influence on the logic of education, and by the students’ internalization of the neoliberal doxa. This paper examines stress as a modern phenomenon. A study of modern populism: What characterizes modern populism and why do we see an increased connection to populist parties

This project involves a study of modern populism in contemporary Europe and the United States. We want to examine and analyze the political party programs of eight different right-wing parties within Europe and the United States. The aim of the analysis is to find similarities between the parties, and thereby identify their core policy areas and interests. By assuming society as a high-speed concept explained by German social theorist Hartmut Rosa, it allows us to subsequently proceed on a theoretical basis for the purposes of this abstract. Thus, we can apply these theories to explain and interpret the policy programs in a global context. Furthermore, it enables an understanding of the characteristics of modern populism, the underlying goal of this study. This study suggests that populism today is especially characterized as anti-pluralistic, critical towards the elite, xenophobic, and representative of the “true people”. Additionally, it seems to be the “slow” individuals who cannot cope with the accelerating environment that are attracted to populistic policies and ideals. This is because they experience populism (right-wing parties) as something that speaks and listens to them when the surroundings become silent. It is a hallmark of modern populism to flourish in the context of high-speed society, thus creating a pressure on 21st century democracy
