In Holland, at the moment when the Batavian Republic was proclaimed after the French revolutionary victory, the republican structure appeared to all the parties as part of the nation’s history. The republic was not one of the spoils of war. Rather, it was the concrete schemes of a republican regime. However, the debate between centralisers and federalists was, itself, quite old. The encouragement of the French to think in terms of the future of the republic had very little resonance in Holland.Willem Frijhoff, L’evidenza repubblicana. In Olanda, quando viene proclamata la Repubblica Batava, dopo la vittoria della Francia rivoluzionaria, la struttura repubblicana appare a tutti i partiti come un’evidenza che fa parte della storia nazionale. La repubblica non è la posta in gioco in una discussione. Sono le modalità concrete di un regime repubblicano ad esserla. Ma il dibattito tra centralisti e federalisti è anche lui antico.
