CWRML: representing crop wild relative conservation and use data in XML
Background
Crop wild relatives are wild species that are closely related to crops. They are valuable as potential gene donors for crop improvement and may help to ensure food security for the future. However, they are becoming increasingly threatened in the wild and are inadequately conserved, both in situ and ex situ. Information about the conservation status and utilisation potential of crop wild relatives is diverse and dispersed, and no single agreed standard exists for representing such information; yet, this information is vital to ensure these species are effectively conserved and utilised. The European Community-funded project, European Crop Wild Relative Diversity Assessment and Conservation Forum, determined the minimum information requirements for the conservation and utilisation of crop wild relatives and created the Crop Wild Relative Information System, incorporating an eXtensible Markup Language (XML) schema to aid data sharing and exchange.
Results
Crop Wild Relative Markup Language (CWRML) was developed to represent the data necessary for crop wild relative conservation and ensure that they can be effectively utilised for crop improvement. The schema partitions data into taxon-, site-, and population-specific elements, to allow for integration with other more general conservation biology schemata which may emerge as accepted standards in the future. These elements are composed of sub-elements, which are structured in order to facilitate the use of the schema in a variety of crop wild relative conservation and use contexts. Pre-existing standards for data representation in conservation biology were reviewed and incorporated into the schema as restrictions on element data contents, where appropriate.
Conclusion
CWRML provides a flexible data communication format for representing in situ and ex situ conservation status of individual taxa as well as their utilisation potential. The development of the schema highlights a number of instances where additional standards-development may be valuable, particularly with regard to the representation of population-specific data and utilisation potential. As crop wild relatives are intrinsically no different to other wild plant species there is potential for the inclusion of CWRML data elements in the emerging standards for representation of biodiversity data

Running wild: Neurogenesis in the hippocampus across the lifespan in wild and laboratory-bred Norway rats
The dogmatic view that new neurons are not produced in the adult mammalian brain has been overturned in light of mounting evidence that neurogenesis continues to occur within two neurogenic niches, the subventricular zone and the hippocampus. In mammals, new neurons are incorporated into the hippocampus throughout life and are influenced by environmental and genetic factors. Most studies use captive-bred animals, and no previous studies have examined neurogenesis in free-living rats despite the common use of laboratory rats. In particular, exercise upregulates neurogenesis in the hippocampus and exercise levels would certainly differ between wild and captive populations. Therefore, it is unclear whether results from captive populations can be generalized to natural populations or reflect variations from an artificial and inappropriate "baseline" level. To address this, we compared levels of cell proliferation and the number of immature neurons (using the endogenous markers Ki67 and doublecortin, respectively) in captured wild juvenile and adult Norway rats to three captive strains (Sprague-Dawley, Long-Evans, and Brown Norway) of the same species. Here, we show that the level of cell proliferation and young immature neuron survival in the dentate gyrus of juvenile wild rats is significantly higher than in Sprague-Dawley rats, but not Long-Evans or Brown Norway rats. However, cell proliferation and the number of immature neurons in the hippocampus of adult wild rats are within the normal range of captive-bred rats at all adult ages examined. This finding is surprising given the dissimilar environments, including stressors and opportunities for exercise, encountered by each population. © 2009 Wiley-Liss, Inc.Peer reviewedFInal article published. Role of plasma temperature and residence time in stagnation plasma synthesis of c-BN nanopowders
The synthesis of cubic boron nitride (c-BN) nanoparticles is examined experimentally by introducing borane ammonia precursor into a thermal plasma oriented in a stagnation point geometry, where nanoparticles are formed in the flow field upon reaching a cold substrate. The quasi-one dimensional flow field allows for correlating the plasma temperature and residence time to the final particle phase, morphology, size, and purity. Constant temperature and residence time cases are studied to assess the parameter’s affect on the resulting particle characteristics. The as-synthesized nanoparticles are characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). Cubic structured particles are synthesized at plasma temperatures of 3000-8000K and precursor decomposition times ≥0.030s. The highest purity samples are produced at a plasma temperature and residence time of 6500K and 0.075s, respectively. Samples with lower c-BN content are observed with higher percentages of hexagonal and amorphous phases. The particle morphology shifts from spherical agglomerates to faceted shapes as c-BN purity increases. Also, particle size undergoes an increase in nominal size. The resulting phase and purity is proposed to be governed by growth mechanisms that result in high-energy particle-particle interactions where the energy transferred is sufficient for atomic re-alignment into a denser phase.M.S.Includes bibliographical referencesby Jonathan M Doyl
