The escape of the imaginary author
This creative/critical overview of the novels A Bloody Good Friday, The Chivalry o/Crime and Cressida's Bed by Desmond Barry, and Far South by David Enrique Spellman, will examine some of the literary influences in the composition of the novels, as well as the development of the author from naive dilettante, influenced by the Beats, to heteronymous voice of the Far South Project and the creation of an imaginary author. The overview examines some of the underlying psychological and philosophical matrices out of which the novels were born and the influence of writers such as William S. Burroughs and Jorge Luis Borges. The work will trace a journey from the Aristotelian forms of the published Barry novels to the experimental multi-platform narratives of Far South. It will show how the process of learning in an academic environment influenced an involvement with Aristotelian formal strategies that in turn led to experiments with the use of chance in the production of multiplatform narratives. The exegesis points the way to new literary and creative forms through digital technologies that are widely accessible and open up innovative ways of cooperation among dancers, photographers, filmmakers, web designers, and writers, which can subvert or cooperate with existing publishing paradigms. This self-reflective narrative examination of practice-led research and creative process begins as an examination of the tensions involved in the creation of a classic Aristotelian narrative form and develops into an interrogation and illumination of the potentialities of using cooperation and chance in prose fiction and interdisciplinary multi-platform stories.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

On the Sherlocks, Jane Coleman and County Kildare in the Eighteen Forties
In the late 1980s and early 1990s the author acquired about 30,000 letters written mainly in the 1840s. These pertained to estates throughout Ireland managed by the firm of James Robert Stewart and Joseph Kincaid, hereafter denoted SK. Until the letters – called the SK correspondence in what follows – became the author’s property, they had not seen light of day since the 1840s. Addressed mainly to the firm’s office in Dublin, they were written by landlords, tenants, the partners in SK, local agents, etc. After about 200 years in operation as a land agency, the firm in which members of the Stewart family were the principal partners – Messrs J. R. Stewart & Son(s) from the mid- 1880s onwards – ceased operations in the mid-1980s. Since 1994 the author has been researching the SK correspondence of the 1840s. It gives many new insights into economic and social conditions in Ireland during the decade of the great famine, and into the operation of Ireland’s most important land agency during those years. It is intended ultimately to publish details on several of the estates managed by SK in a study more comprehensive than the present article, in book form. The proposed title is Landlords, tenants, famine: business of an Irish land agency in the 1840s, a draft of which has now been completed. A majority of the letters in that study are on themes some of which one might expect - rents, distraint (seizure of assets in lieu of rent); ‘voluntary’ surrender of land in return for ‘compensation’ upon quitting quietly; formal ejectment (a matter of last resort on estates managed by SK); landlordassisted emigration (on a scale much more extensive than most historians of Ireland in the 1840s appear to believe); petitions from tenants; complaints by tenants, both about other tenants and about local agents; landlord-financed and other relief of distress both before and during the great famine; major works of improvement (on almost all of the estates managed by SK which have been investigated in detail in the draft book); applications by SK, on behalf of landlords, for government loans to finance improvements; recommendations of agricultural advisers hired by SK, etc. Thus, most of the SK correspondence is about aspects of estate management. But the firm of SK was not only a manager of land. The correspondence reveals only two estates in Kildare, each of them relatively small, managed by SK in the 1840s. These were the lands of the Sherlocks near Naas and of Jane Coleman in the Kilcullen district. The correspondence on these properties differs substantively from most of those discussed in detail in the draft of Landlords, tenants, famine: first, it is relatively small in quantity, and secondly, it contains relatively little on the core aspects of estate management indicated above. Much of that on the Sherlocks focuses on misfortunes among family members, while the correspondence on Jane Coleman highlights the benevolence of that proprietor.

Public Interest Drift Revised: Tracing the Sources of Social Change Commitment among Black Harvard Law Students
Although public interest drift -the phenomenon of law students\u27 interest in public interest careers decreasing over the course of legal education-has been studied extensively, author Jene Desmond- Harris argues that rates among black law students deserve a specially tailored analysis because of the black community\u27s longstanding faith in the law and lawyers as instruments of social change. Through a study of current black Harvard Law students, admitted students, and alumni, she investigates the interactions between the Harvard Law School experience and the development of black law students\u27 attitudes about pursuing careers aimed at affecting social change. Incorporating her own research with that of others, Desmond-Harris creates and outlines a theory of why law schools should admit students dedicated to pursuing social change careers, and work to cultivate such commitment in those who look to legal education to guide them toward careers that reflect their values

Le dinamiche dell'industria cerasicola: andamenti e prospettive globali
This review article discusses the future trajectory of the world sweet cherry industry based on analyses of trends over the last two decades. The world production, exports and prices of fresh sweet cherries have all increased significantly in the past, and continued growth is forecast through the next two decades. However, the expansion has not been uniform. The greatest growth has been in just three countries, Chile, Turkey and the United States. In contrast, in the rest of the world, production has been stagnant while exports have increased almost fivefold. Both exports and imports are dominated by less than 10 countries. The main source of industry expansion has been the increase in bearing area, while average yields have grown very slowly. Most future growth is expected to be driven by further increases in bearing area. Per capita supplies are forecast to increase by 57.5 percent between 2020 and 2040. The author has drawn on several different studies to forecast how sweet cherry demand will respond to increased production. To prevent prices being depressed, the industry will need extensive promotional programs in both domestic and export market
The ecology and conservation management of Murray Cod Macullochella peelii peelii
Deposited with permission of the author. © 2006 Dr. John Desmond KoehnMurray cod Maccullochella peelii peelii is an iconic freshwater angling species that has suffered declines in abundance and is now listed as a nationally vulnerable species. Despite recognition of the need for biological knowledge to provide future management directions, little is known of its ecology. This thesis examines that ecology to provide new knowledge and recommendations for improved conservation management. (For complete abstract open document
