1.2. Curtonotum Macquart Type species: Musca gibba Fabricius, 1805 [preoccupied], by original designation. [The name of the Type species is a junior primary homonym preoccupied by Musca gibba Müller, 1776: 175 and M. gibba Rossi, 1794: 73. Curtonotum taeniatum Hendel, 1913: 629 was accepted as the replacement name by Thompson and Pont (1993)]. Species included: 73. Klymko and Marshall (2011) noted that there were no obvious synapomorphies for the genus Curtonotum, with the possible exception of the spinose costa. A costal margin with very long, conspicuous, closely-packed spines (16) may be a homologue and have been lost in the Axinota pictiventris species-group.Published as part of Kirk-Spriggs, Ashley H. & Wiegmann, Brian M., 2013, A revision of Afrotropical Quasimodo flies (Diptera: Schizophora; Curtonotidae). 1.2.7. Curtonotum saheliense species-group
Species included: 2 (Afrotropical / Palaearctic).

Synapomorphy: Distiphallus with long, obliquely angled, posteriorly-directed spine basally (44). Tsacas (1977) included the two sister species, C. saheliense Tsacas and C. simile Tsacas, both of which are confined to xeric habitats bordering the Sahara and the Arabian Peninsula, in his cuthbertsoni species-group. As attested by the above-mentioned synapomorphy, they are here regarded as being sufficiently distinct to warrant inclusion in a species-group of their own.
Published as part of Kirk-Spriggs, Ashley H. & Wiegmann, Brian M., 2013,
A revision of Afrotropical Quasimodo flies (Diptera: Schizophora; Curtonotidae). 1.2.6. Curtonotum gonzo species-group
Species included: 2 (Afrotropical).

Synapomorphies: Sternite 5 expanded, 4–5 with modified setae (23) and basiphallus with expanded subdivided mid section and cordiform extension of distiphallus (46). The systematic position of C. gonzo and C. sternithrix can only be fully assessed as part of a more extensive molecular study. They are here tentatively ascribed to the speciesgroup based on the aforementioned synapomorphies, but differ externally.
Published as part of Kirk-Spriggs, Ashley H. & Wiegmann, Brian M., 2013,
A revision of Afrotropical Quasimodo flies (Diptera: Schizophora; Curtonotidae). 1.2.8. Curtonotum uncinatum species-group
Species included: 10 (Afrotropical).

Synapomorphy: Distiphallus with two dorsally-directed basal spines or dorsal ridge (45). Tsacas (1977) regarded 9 of the 10 species here ascribed to the species-group as a single species, C. cuthbertsoni. The 10 species are virtually identical externally and are only separable on the basis of slight, but consistent differences in the shape of the basiphallus and distiphallus of the male terminalia.
1.2.9. Curtonotum stuckenbergi species-group
Species included: 7 (Afrotropical; confined to Madagascar).

Synapomorphy: Basiphallus heavily sclerotised, markedly expanded apically and narrowed pre-apically (47). Tsacas (1977) included all species then known from Madagascar in his cuthbertsoni species-group. Seven of the species recorded from the island are regarded as being sufficiently distinct to warrant inclusion in a species-group of their own, as attested by the above-mentioned synapomorphy. A more complete molecular study of the Malagasy Curtonotum fauna is required to ascertain whether this species-group is truly monophyletic.
Published as part of Kirk-Spriggs, Ashley H. & Wiegmann, Brian M., 2013,
A revision of Afrotropical Quasimodo flies (Diptera: Schizophora; Curtonotidae). 1.2.10. Curtonotum boeny species-group
Species included: 2 (Afrotropical; confined to Madagascar).

Synapomorphies: Lateral lobe of epandrium with 2 very strong setae only (35), lateral lobe of epandrium strongly excavated (48). Tsacas (1977) assigned the Malagasy endemic species C. boeny Tsacas to his cuthbertsoni speciesgroup. Both C. boeny and its recently described sister species, C. griveaudi Kirk-Spriggs (also endemic to Madagascar), are here regarded as being sufficiently distinct to warrant inclusion in a species-group of their own, as attested by the above-mentioned synapomorphies.
Published as part of Kirk-Spriggs, Ashley H. & Wiegmann, Brian M., 2013,
A revision of Afrotropical Quasimodo flies (Diptera: Schizophora; Curtonotidae). 1.2.4. Curtonotum platyphallum species-group
Species included: 3 (Afrotropical).

Synapomorphy: Basiphallus with extensive angulate ventrally expanded and concave process (42). Tsacas (1977) included C. platyphallum Tsacas (based on the unique damaged holotype) in his cuthbertsoni species-group. Curtonotum platyphallum and the two newly-described species, C. moffatt sp. n. and C. marriott sp. n., form a distinct clade, and as attested by the above-mentioned synapomorphy, are here regarded as being sufficiently distinct to warrant inclusion in a species-group of their own.
Published as part of Kirk-Spriggs, Ashley H. & Wiegmann, Brian M., 2013,
A revision of Afrotropical Quasimodo flies (Diptera: Schizophora; Curtonotidae).
