    Classical Music Background in EFL High School Students' Creative Writing Activities

    Classical music, apart from its usage in entertainment society, has been frequently incorporated into educational settings. There have been positive and negative findings in earlier research on the impact of classical music background on specific tasks. Therefore, this research aims to find out if high school students enjoy listening to classical music while completing creative writing exercises, as well as to disclose the benefits it has for them. A total of three high school students completed two small experiments of doing creative writing activities while being exposed to classical music background. This study used interviews as the main tool to collect the data. The findings showed that while completing creative writing activities, high school students enjoy listening to classical music in the background. Additionally, there are a number of benefits related to this practice; expressing themselves better, building their imagination, drafting, generating ideas, getting inspiration, and staying focused. The findings are crucial for parents, teachers, and students to enhance and improve students ‘academic achievement by incorporating classical music background in the learning process

    The Impact of Using Multimedia Technology to Enhance Listening Skills

This study examines the impact of multimedia technology on these skills, addressing the need for varied and engaging materials that go beyond traditional methods. It investigates how integrating multimedia elements – audio, video, and animation – enhances students' listening comprehension and information processing abilities. Specifically, the research explores the use of movies, music, and online platforms to create authentic and adaptable learning experiences. The findings indicate that multimedia fosters an immersive environment, allowing learners to combine auditory and visual cues, thereby improving understanding and memory. The study concludes that the strategic implementation of multimedia tools significantly enhances L2 listening proficiency by offering varied, frequent, and engaging practice, better preparing students for real-world communication scenarios.     Incidental Vocabulary Learning Through Hidden-Object Game: Gardenscapes

    Incidental vocabulary learning is considered as one of the main sources of learner-centered vocabulary acquisition in real-world situations. Recent studies have examined how information technology media can facilitate learners in acquiring vocabulary incidentally. More specifically, the affordances of hidden-object game, such as stimulating matching the correct objects with the words may be applied to construct an incidental language learning environment. The aim of this study is to investigate how the Gardenscapes game facilitates the learners in incidental vocabulary learning. Ten participants of eight-grade students took part in this study and the data were collected using tests and interview. The result of this study confirms that the participants showed progress in learning new vocabulary through the game. The data also demonstrate that learners acquired the target vocabulary incidentally after being exposed to the game’s vocabulary. Words guessing, still, is the common strategy used by learners while playing the game. Concisely, the game’s visual facilitated the participants to learn the vocabulary through the game

    Foreign Language Anxiety in Transactional Speaking Class This study aimed to find kinds of anxiety experienced by EFL (English as Foreign Language) learners in Transactional Speaking class. Several researches (Horwitz et al. (1986); Dörnyei (2001); and Littlewood (1998)) propose that anxiety can impede the students’ learning processes. Therefore, it is important find kinds of anxiety which the participants are experiencing. This study examined 56 first year students of English Literature Program of Faculty of Language and Literature in Satya Wacana Christian University who are taking Transactional Speaking class. A 16-item questionnaire adapted from Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale and semi-structured interview were used as data collection instruments. The data shows that the participants experienced the three kinds of anxiety, Test Anxiety, Communication Apprehension, and Fear of Negative Evaluation. The three kinds of anxiety used in this study are based on Horwitz, Horwitz, & Cope (1986). The discussion shows that their anxiety could be affected by many reasons. It is hoped that by considering various kinds of anxiety and its reasons, teachers can get a better insight in motivating their students who are anxious

    Factors Affecting EFL Students' Difficulty in Reading Comprehension

    This study aims to discover the internal factors affecting EFL students' difficulty in reading comprehension. The research participants in this study were five English Foreign Language (EFL) students who could not achieve the grade standard in a Reading class at the English Language Education Program (ELEP) in a small town in Central Java. The Interviews were used as the instruments to collect the data. In the interview, 5 participants were asked about the internal factors that affected students' difficulties in reading comprehension. The thematic analysis revealed that students' difficulty in reading comprehension is affected by two primary internal factors. The first factor pertains to students' ability, encompassing their grammatical and vocabulary knowledge in English. The second factor encompasses students’ perceptions including feelings of interest, boredom, anxiety, sickness, and personal problems

    Teaching English Vocabulary Using Visual Materials to Young Learners

    In this era, English becomes one of the important languages that should be mastered. There are around 500 million English speakers in this world and English becomes the media to communicate and interact with the others. It would be better if the process of studying English starts from a young age. The fact is, teaching English to young learners is not an easy job, young learners like to play and they ignore the lesson. This research has been conducted in grade three of elementary schools in order to show how visual materials are used to teach young learners and their attitude in learning English. An interview and observations have been developed to determine how the teacher used visual materials and attitudes of young learners towards the study English vocabulary using visual materials. The findings of the research have revealed that the teacher used visual materials depend on the topic and visual materials make English lesson became simpler and students understood it better. Moreover, the students at grade three showed their positive and negative attitude. The positive attitude shown by some students who come forward and try to apply what they learned in class and negative attitudes showed by some students who inclined to play balloon, or raise a hand because their classmates raised their hand too

    Exploring The English Language Education Students’ Difficultis and Strategies in Reading Classes

    This study aimed to find out the reading difficulties that the English Language Education Program students face during reading activities and to find out the reading strategies that they use to overcome the difficulties. The participants were seven students of the English Language Education Program at Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana from the 2022 batch who had experienced the Critical Reading course. The criteria for selected participants were students' grades (A to C). Semi-structured interviews were used as the instruments to collect the data. The data gained were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results of this study indicated five main themes of reading difficulties that the English Language Education Program students face in Critical Reading course: 1) determining the structure of text correctly; 2) grammatical errors; 3) determining the main idea and supporting details; 4) identify propaganda techniques; and 5) lack of students' reading interest. Moreover, the researcher also found six main themes of reading strategies that students use in overcoming difficulties: 1) review material; 2) ask questions to classmates; 3) have a small discussion with classmates; 4) search for material references on the internet; 5) use Google translate; and 6) reread the text

    Students' Perception of The Use of First Language in Grammar Class

    In language education, teachers' use of first language (L1) in grammar classes has been a subject of debate. This study aims to investigate students' perceptions of first language (L1) use in Intermediate Grammar courses. Specifically, this study explores students' perceptions of the teacher's use of L1 and its impact on their understanding, engagement, and overall language proficiency. This study's participants were students taking Intermediate Grammar in the academic year 2023/2024 in the English Language Education Program (ELEP) at one of the universities in Central Java. This study uses a qualitative approach with questionnaires and in-depth interviews with students from the Intermediate Grammar class to gather information. 11 students filled out the questionnaire, and 4 students were interviewed. The results show that students from the Intermediate Grammar class agreed and positively perceived the use of the first language in the Intermediate Grammar class. Students prefer that the teacher use their first language in the process of learning the grammar because they have a better understanding of the material when the teacher explains it using their first language. Moreover, the use of L1 also helped them to feel secure, comfortable, and motivated to learn the English grammar, and more willing to participate in classroom activities. Students did not think that the use of L1 hindered their English fluency

    Pre-Service Teachers’ Perception about Using Songs in Teaching English to Young Learners

    Songs are believed as one of effective tools in teaching young learner especially primary students. The primary aim of this study is to explore ELEP (English Language Education Program) pre-service teachers’ perception toward the use of songs in teaching young learners. English pre-service teachers’ perceptions were collected through close-ended questionnaire and the result demonstrated that ELEP pre-service teachers have strong belief about the pedagogical value of songs in teaching young learners. The ELEP pre-service teachers believe that songs are essential and it is important to be inserted in young learner’s curriculum. ELEP pre-service have no doubt about the effectiveness of songs in teaching young learners. The findings also showed that ELEP pre-service teachers have positive attitude toward the use of songs and they use songs as much as they can. Related to the ideal frequency about the use of songs done by the pre-service teachers, it showed that most of teachers used one song in every two weeks during their teaching practicum because they cannot find it well. However, the findings also show that pre-service English teacher have difficulty in choosing appropriate songs in every topic of each curriculum. It is suggested that pre-service teachers should be given a list of useful websites to choose songs in teaching young learner. In conclusion, it is possible to argue that this study strengthens the previous study done by the earlier researchers toward the use of songs in teaching young learner, especially a research conducted in Indonesia
