Georg Hermann.
The internationally renowned author of numerous novels, essays, and articles, Georg Hermann, was born as Georg Borchardt in Berlin-Friedenau on October 7, 1871, the youngest of six children in a well-established Jewish family. Later in life he used his father’s first name Hermann as his surname when writing. Contrary to the expectations for a young man from a reputable family, Hermann did not pursue the Abitur exam in a Gymnasium (secondary school), but instead received a one-year certificate in 1890, leaving school to become an apprentice salesman at a tie company. From 1896 until 1899 he worked in the Statistical Office of Berlin, at the same time attending literature and art history lectures at the University of Berlin. Afterwards he worked as a freelance writer and art critic. His first book, 'Spielkinder', was published in 1896, but he did not become well-known until 1906, with the publication of 'Jettchen Gebert', followed by its sequel, 'Henriette Jacoby'. These novels told the story of the life of a young woman living in Jewish Berlin during the Biedermeier period of the 1820s and 1830s. Politically active, Georg Hermann was also a member of the Central-Verein deutscher Staatsbürger jüdischen Glaubens.Having become known for his pacifist tendencies through his writing, and because of his Jewish heritage, Georg Hermann and his family fled to Holland shortly after the burning of the Reichstag in 1933. Although the rest of his family was saved from the Nazis after their occupation of Holland in 1943, Georg Hermann was sent to the Dutch concentration camp of Westerbork. On November 16, 1943 he was transported to Auschwitz and either died during transport or shortly after his arrival.Digital ImageRecord added to DigiTool. Aleph record suppressed. J. Narcissus: Woman, water and the West
This essay explores the symbiotic relationship between European modernity, its vision of woman and water. The union of these three metaconcepts is consecrated by the Ovidian story of Narcissus and his other, Echo. The West finally found itself completely through Hegel, the Ur-narcissist, who explains the immutable link between that European monopoly, history (by which he means the potential for becoming modern), and the sea. The narcissism of modernity is the great theme of Marx and Engels in the Communist Manifesto, which shows how the bourgeoisie seeks to remake the entire world in its own image. Psychoanalysis, through the writings of Ferenczi, joined in cementing the connection, likening woman to the primal sea to which the male ever yearns to return. And Foucault suggests a potential conclusion from this metaconceptual constellation: that Man, a Western creation, may well disappear like a face drawn on a sandy beach. © 2013 Feminist Review.Bachelard G., 1983, WATER DREAMS; BASKINS CL, 1993, OXFORD ART J, V16, P25; Baudrillard F., 1975, MIRROR PRODUCTION; Butler J., 2006, GENDER TROUBLE; Chakrabarty D, 2000, PROVINCIALIZING EURO; Deleuze Gilles, 1987, 1000 PLATEAUS CAPITA; Eagleton Terry, 1990, IDEOLOGY AESTHETIC; Ferenczi S., 1968, THALASSA THEORY GENI; Foucault M., 1989, MADNESS CIVILIZATION; Foucault Michel, 1970, ORDER THINGS; Freud S., 1957, STANDARD EDITION COM, V14; Hegel Georg, 1975, LECT PHILOS WORLD HI; Irigaray L., 1993, MARINE LOVER F NIETZ; Irigaray L., 1985, THIS SEX WHICH IS NO; Kristeva J, 1987, TALES LOVE; Lacan Jacques, 1977, ECRITS SELECTION; Lerner Daniel, 1958, PASSING TRADITIONAL; Marx K, 1992, COMMUNIST MANIFESTO; Marx Karl, 1990, CAPITAL CRITIQUE POL, V1; Massad Joseph, 2007, DESIRING ARABS; Michelet J., 1875, SEA; Mitchell T., 1988, COLONISING EGYPT; Ovid, 1958, METAMORPHOSES; Smith Adam, 1994, WEALTH NATIONS; SPIVAK GC, 1993, NEW LITERARY HIST, V24, P17, DOI 10.2307-4692670
Georg Trakl and melancholy
This paper identifies some of the decisive aspects of Georg Trakl’s poetry, taking as the starting point the author’s awareness about God’s death, from Nietzsche’s approach. Emphasis is placed on melancholy, support of the creation, testimony and acknowledgement of failure and grief of mankind, from which the author was able to express his discouragement upon the downfall and decline of the West.

Letter containing inquiry regarding the ethnic identity of the descendents of Georg Moritz Oppenheim.
Letter from Wilhelm Gehlig to Rabbi Dr. Freudenthal in Nuremberg with a genealogical question regarding Georg Moritz Oppenheim. Of particular interest to the author is to determine whether Oppenheim's descendents are "rein jüdischen Blutes (=of pure Jewish blood)."Robert Singermandigitize
The determination of delta C-13 in soil microbial biomass using fumigation-extraction
The determination of the isotopic composition of the microbial biomass C in soil is an important tool to study soil microbial ecology and the decomposition and microbial immobilization of soil organic C. We discuss advantages and disadvantages of different methods to determine C-13/C-12 in soil microbial biomass and propose a new procedure that is based on the UV-catalyzed liquid oxidation of fumigated and non-fumigated soil extracts combined with trapping of the released CO2 in liquid nitrogen and subsequent determination of delta(13)CO(2)-C by a gas chromatograph connected with an isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS). This method was evaluated using test solutions with known isotopic composition and soil extracts. Additionally, the method was compared with an off-line sample preparation technique combined with isotope analysis by a dual-inlet IRMS and an on-line analysis using an elemental analyser connected with an IRMS. All methods applied obtained comparable results and there were no significant differences between the delta(13)C values measured. The off-line preparation procedure had the highest precision but it was also the most labour-intensive. The choice of the most suitable method depends mainly on the number of samples that have to be analysed, the salt concentration of the extracts and the differences of delta(13)C that have to be detected. The application of this method with liquid oxidation and subsequent GC-IRMS analysis showed that microbial biomass C of a grassland soil was C-13-enriched by 2parts per thousand delta(13)C(PDB) compared with the total soil organic C. The addition of maize straw resulted in a rapid immobilization of maize C in the microbial biomass. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All fights reserved
