[EN] The theories of W. Whyte in his book The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces and R. In this TFG we analyse both researches with the aim of highlighting the main ideas of their studies by taking them to a practical application in a case study: the analysis of the Plaça San Felip Neri and the Plaça Xúquer in Valencia. In particular, we will focus on analysing how social life is generated in squares and we will try to glimpse the capacity of the design of urban public spaces to generate social life. The work will be supported by plans and graphic documentation of the spaces under study.Tendero Marchante, S. (2021). Pequeños y grandes espacios entre W. Whyte y R. Oldenburg. Continuity and change in a partitioned civil society : Whyte revisited
Revised version of a paper presented at the final conference of the Mapping frontiers, plotting pathways: routes to North-South cooperation in a divided island programme, City Hotel, Armagh, 19-20 January 2006.This paper revisits John Whyte’s seminal 1983 article “The permeability of the United Kingdom-Irish border: a preliminary reconnaissance” (Whyte, 1983). The objective
is to explore hypotheses Whyte put forward as to why some private organisations are all-Ireland while others follow the international boundary. He suggested that two variables are crucial in explaining this: the nature of the organisation’s activities and the date of its foundation. He also identified a lack of readily available information on foundation dates. To overcome this lacuna we carried out a survey of private organisations to ascertain their foundation date, area of activity and what if any territorial reconfiguring they have undergone. Using the same functional categories as Whyte our research is generally supportive of his initial findings. Civil society can act as a counter-force to the boundary reinforcing dynamics of separate state developments. Not applicableti ke se - 100706 RB
A mere ritual or incantation?”: local disinfection policy in late nineteenth century England
Rebecca Whyte, (Scottish Government/University of Cambridge)
Disinfection as a public health intervention came of age in the late nineteenth century, when germ theories and public health legislation made disinfection of objects, places and people an increasing part of the day-to-day work of local medical officers of health. Rebecca Whyte's talk explores the evolution of disinfection policy in five case study Lancashire towns, identifying the chronology and nature of policy change in the context of national legislation, developments in scientific knowledge and medical debates. Her presentation illuminates wider debates about the role of scientific knowledge and practical experience in shaping policy and practice in public health
