How Reliable is Citizen-Derived Scientific Data? An Evaluatoin of Contrail Observations using Multiple Datasets and GIS Techniques
No full textThis paper details the preliminary outcome of research using GIS techniques and multiple datasets to evaluate the quality of contrail observations by citizens who participated in the Open Air Laboratories (OPAL) Climate Survey - a nationwide citizen science project. Unlike other citizen science studies in which 'experts' can revisit sites of observatoin, independent verification of contrails is difficult because of the ephemeral nature of the atmosphere. This research therefore uniquely uses datasets which reflect the complex and ever-changing 3D nature of the atmosphere and have been derived from a variety of sources (experts, models and amateur enthusiasts) with different spatial and temporal attributes
Challenges in geocoding socially-generated data
Get PDFAn investigation into the difficulties facing researchers attempting to geocode data derived from social networking sites for analysis is presented. A number of issues are identified including the lack of any inherent scale in either the socially-generated data or the results for a geocoder, and the ambiguous nature of place names. A methodology is therefore presented that may be followed by the researcher in order to address these issues, and as such improve the quality and meaning of spatial analysis that is based upon these data
Morphological Variability of Cleveleys Beach, UK at Multiannual Timescales based on Airborne LiDAR Data
No full textAirborne LiDAR data is used to study morphological evolution along Cleveleys beach in North Lancashire. Map overlay techniques are used to identify regions of change; variations in beach volume are calculated in the form of momentary intertidal coastlines (MICLs) and bar crest positions are extracted from the LiDAR data to provide an indication of sediment transport direction. Results indicate general linear onshore bar movement across the region, but more complex patterns along one section of coast
