    This lantern slide, “Wilbert F. Carey, Class of 1892,” is a black and white portrait of YMCA Training School (now known as Springfield College) alumnus Wilbert Franklin Carey.Carey began working in YMCA facilities in 1891 and, from this, decided to attend the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. After graduating in 1892, he worked as General Secretary at the YMCA facility in South Bend, Indiana until 1898. From 1899 to 1903, Carey worked as General Secretary at the YMCA in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. After leaving this position, he worked from 1904 until 1912 as the General Secretary at the YMCA in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He died June 16, 1940. This item is part of a Springfield College series of lantern slides depicting YMCA Training School alumni who held positions at YMCA facilities.Text on border reads, “W. F.     Bud Powell as a special guest with Charles Mingus performs "I'll Remember April" at the 1st Festival Jazz d'Antibes, Juan-le-Pins, France. July 13, 1960. The performers include Charlie Mingus (bass), Bud Powell (piano), Eric Dolphy (alto saxophone), Ted Curson (trumpet), Booker Ervin (tenor saxophone), Dannie Richmond (drums). At 15:23, there is audio of the voice and guitar of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, from a television broadcast from the same Antibes festival in 1960. The first is "His Eye is on the Sparrow." Then there is a short interview with Tharpe which goes directly into her performance with the Sims-Wheeler band of "Gimme That Old Time Religion." At 22:20, the audio continues abruptly with the Wilbur de Paris band playing "That's a Plenty." The performers are Sidney de Paris (trumpet), Wilbert Kirk (drums), John Smith (guitar/banjo), Garvin Bushell (clarinet), Hayes Alvis (bass) and Sonny White (piano).     Broadband multiple light scattering in white LED diffusers

    There is a strong worldwide drive to efficient general lighting using white light emitting diodes (LEDs) [1,2]. White LEDs often consist of a semiconductor diode [3,4,5] combined with luminescent phosphors [5] to convert part of the blue light to green yellow, and red. In state-of-the art white-light LEDs one exploits multiple scattering of light [1,2]. The transport of light then becomes diffusive, which serves to obtain a desirable smooth lighting without hot spots and without angular color distribution. Moreover, photons are recycled so that thin phosphor layers serve to improve cost efficiency and reduce environmental impact

    A study of the effects on blood clotting times with respect to vitamin d deficiency, calcium levei5 and age in rats, 1964

    Effects of a vitamin D free diet, sodium iodoacetate and potassium iodoacetate on the clotting time were investigated in the rat. The results of this investigation indicated that the blod clotting time of the rat will decrease with age unless altered by chemical or other means. This was clearly indicated throughout the duration of the experiment. The results of the vitamin D free diet in this experiment are similar to those of Schacheter jat al., (i960), who stated that the calcium level in the rat is dependent on the dietary vitamin D and on the age of the rat. The vitamin D free diet reduced considerably the amount of vitamin D in the rat and because of this depletion of vitamin D the calcium level of the experimental rats was lower, as indicated by the blood clotting time. The results of the investigation indicated, however, that even though the rats were on a vitamin D free diet, the calcium level would still increase with age. Recovery from vitamin D deficiency occurred within two to three days. Sodium iodoacetate appears to have similar effects as dietary vitamin D deficiency. The concentration of the sodium salt did not yield results as pronounced as those of the vitamin D free diet, however, it has some effect at the site of injection. The Potassium salt of iodoacetic acid appeared to have similar action as that of the vitamin D free diet and that of the sodium salt. According to the findings of the experiment, the potassium has a less effect on the blood clotting time than that of the diet and that of sodium iodoacetate

    The energy-efficient generation of white light has recently become an important societal issue. The technology of white-light emitting diodes (LEDs) is one of the most promising solutions to efficiently generate white light for home, office, and street locations, and even for remote locations without electric power grid [1]. One of the outstanding in the development of LED technology are understanding the scattering [2], the absorption and emission with analytical physical models [3, 4]. As a first example of the power of the physical understanding of multiple light scattering in LEDs, we describe straightforward tools to extract essential optical parameters
