Apophatic Elements in the Theory and Practice of Psychoanalysis: Pseudo-Dionysius and C.G. Jung
No full textThis thesis identifies apophatic elements in the theory and practice of psychoanalysis through an examination of Pseudo-Dionysius and C.G. Jung. Pseudo-Dionysius brought together Greek and Biblical currents of negative theology and the via negativa. The apophatic concepts and metaphors which appear in the work of Pseudo-Dionysius are identified. The psychology of Jung can be read as a continuation and extension of the apophatic tradition. The presence of neoplatonic themes in Jung’s work is discussed, as well as his references to Pseudo-Dionysius. There is a thorough examination of Jung’s discussion of opposites, including his reception of Nicholas of Cusa’s concept of the coincidence of opposites. The role of the transcendent function in Jung’s psychology is reviewed. The work of contemporary scholars of religion, philosophers and Jungian theorists are compared to Jung’s using the lens of apophasis. There is an exploration of ways in which motifs in Pseudo-Dionysius’ Ecclesiatical Hierarchy resonate with contemporary psychoanalytic psychotherapy. This study demonstrates that apophatic motifs saturate Jung’s work. It provides a platform for research into apophasis in the wider field of psychoanalysis
The politics of monetary sector cooperation among the Economic Community of West African States members
No full textThe author tries to explain why monetary cooperation and integration have been difficulty to achieve among member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He shows how different interest groups--both members and nonmembers--have over time influenced policies and positions on various ECOWAS member states. Unfortunately, most negotiations for cooperation among ECOWAS member states have a much better monetary cooperation and integration program, mainly because of France's active support and participation in negotiations, mediation, and consensus building. Unfortunately, Nigeria-which has been the main force behind bilingual regional integration in West Africa--has a different agenda from France. Its promotion of a bilingual economic grouping in West Africa was in part an attempt to reduce France's influence in West Africa, so France is unlikely to allow economic and monetary cooperation and integration along Nigerian lines. The fact that Nigeria is still a weak state does not help. The choice for francophone West African countries is therefore between closer ties with France--which has provided development aid, ensured currency convertibility, and guaranteed monetary stability in those francophone countries--and closer ties with Nigeria (which has done none of the above for itself, much less for its neighbors). The increasing convergence of macroeconomic indices among ECOWAS member countries--which is essential for monetary cooperation and integration--has come about largely because of events outside of ECOWAS or because of externally (International Monetary Fund) imposed structural adjustment programs. This article is by one of the students of the psychologist C.G. Jung. She practised as a Jungian psychoanalyst in Strasbourg from 1946 to 1970. She deals here with the theological dimension, mostly implicit, of Jung's thouth, which is generally overlooked by theology. The author shows how the major theologians, who are the exception to the general rule, make room for Jungian anthropology, and she calls for a more open attitude in theology, because of the light thrown by Jung's thought on many theological statements.L'article qu'on lira est d'une élève du psychologue des profondeurs C. No full textThe indigenous words in the Stefano manuscript give us an important albeit small window into the languages of the North West Cape Aborigines.2 From the available information, we can now be reasonably certain that this wordlist belongs primarily to the Yinikurtira language group.3 We also know that the Yinikurtira community came to be dispersed about one hundred years ago and its members ceased using the Yinikuritra language, which is now formally designated as extinct.4 If in these circumstances we want to find something authentic about the Yinikurtira language we cannot do so by simply asking one of its living speakers. Rather, we need to look at the documents on the Yinikurtira language and culture from about a century ago and from the time when the Yinikurtira people were still living on Yinikurtira country
