Hippeutister amabilis Wenzel 1938
Hippeutister amabilis (Wenzel, 1938) (Fig. 1 E) Solenopsister amabilis Wenzel, 1938: 318; Blackwelder, 1944: 186. Diagnosis: L: 1.5mm; W: 1.25mm (measurements from Wenzel, 1938). Wenzel initially described this species in its own monotypic genus, having been unaware of Reichensperger's then recent description of two species of Hippeutister. Thus he offered no putatively diagnostic species level characters. Based on his description and illustrations the species is clearly correctly placed in Hippeutister. Like only H. manicatus and H. plaumanni, it is evidently completely glabrous, and it seems very similar to the latter in general, showing a distinct sutural row of enlarged punctures. However, Wenzel's figures suggest this species is more densely punctate than H. plaumanni or any of the others of the genus. Distribution: This species has been reported only from the type locality, Cordoba, Veracruz, Mexico where it was collected with Solenopsis xyloni McCook (Wenzel, 1938). Remarks: Unfortunately the type of this species appears lost. Having initially been collected by Charles Seevers and then described by Rupert Wenzel, both Field Museum (Chicago, IL) associates, that seems the only likely repository, although Wenzel did not specify it in his description. However, it has not been found there.Published as part of Caterino, Michael S. & Tishechkin, Alexey K., 2008, A review of Hippeutister Reichensperger with new species from California and Costa Rica (Coleoptera: Histeridae: Hetaeriinae), pp. 39-52 in Zootaxa 1895 on pages 49-50, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18440
Characterization of the H+/peptide cotransporter of eel intestinal brush-border membranes.
H+/peptide cotransport in brush-border membrane vesicles (BBMVs) from eel (Anguilla anguilla) intestine was studied by measuring D-[H-3]-phenylalanyl-L-alanine uptake and by monitoring peptide-dependent intravesicular acidification using the pH-sensitive dye Acridine Orange, D-[H-3]-phenylalanyl-L-alanine influx was greatly stimulated by an inside-negative membrane potential and enhanced by an inwardly directed H+ gradient. In parallel, vesicular Hf influx was significantly increased in the presence of extravesicular D-phenylalanyl-L-alanine or a series of glycyl and L-prolyl peptides. H+/peptide cotransport displayed saturable kinetics involving a single carrier system with apparent substrate affinities of 0.9-2.6 mmol l(-1) depending on the particular peptide. All substrates tested competed with this system. Pre-incubation of BBMVs,vith dipeptides prevented diethylpyrocarbonate inhibition of transport activity, suggesting that the substrates mask histidine residues involved in the catalytic function of the transporter. Using human PepT1-specific primers, a reverse transcriptisn-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) signal was detected in eel intestine. Our results suggest that, in eel intestine, a brush-border membrane 'low-affinity'-type H+/peptide cotransport system is present that shares kinetic features with the mammalian intestinal PepT1-type transporters

Ideology, constitutional culture and institutional change: the EU constitution as reflection of Europe’s emergent postmodernism
Using the example of the European Constitution, this paper argues that ideology plays a much more important role in institutional change than has been indicated hitherto in the literature. Rather than being an intellectual parlor-game, Postmodernism has emerged through European high culture to find its voice in the new Constitution. Although it was rejected by a critical mass of voters, the proposed Constitution offers a telling glimpse into the European intellectual mindset – especially since politicians are now bruiting the possibility of ratifying the constitution via compliant legislatures rather than fickle referenda. Anomalies in the document are better explained by the post-World War Two emergence of postmodern philosophy in Europe than by more traditional explanations from political economy.European constitution, postmodernism, political economy, institutional change
