    Characterization of oil generation and expulsion from coals and source rocks using diamond anvil cell pyrolysis

    A visual technique has been developed using a diamond anvil cell to characterize oil-prone vs. gas-prone coals & source rocks, & evaluate their oil expulsion efficiency. The experiments, conducted using 15 humic or shaly coals, two boghead coals, & eight source rock samples from Taiwan, Turkey, North America, & Australia, show that the technique has potential to distinguish oil-prone coals from gas-prone coals. The oil potential of humic coals was estimated from the amounts of total liquid generated during pyrolysis, which show correlations with the Hydrogen Index (HI) from Rock-Eval pyrolysis & the gas-to-oil ratio (GOR) determined by Py–GC analysis. The changes of visual area (or volume) of neoformed liquid as a function of temperature at four heating rates were used to calculate the extents of kerogen-to-oil transformation for determining the kinetic parameters. The results confirm the kinetic controls on the measured transformations but reveal unusually high apparent activation energies & frequency factors. The use of this technique as a quantitative tool to predict oil generation kinetics should be treated with caution until this discrepancy has been resolved. In addition, this study has demonstrated that the expulsion of oil-like liquid from coals is generally more efficient than from shales, possibly due to the much higher organic content in coal

    Weng Fanggang (1733-1818) was a prominent scholar, poet and critic of Qing dynasty. His Jili criticism was among the most influential poetic discourses in mid-late Qing. Nonetheless, his creative works have been disparaged since then, but his researches on Shenyun and Gediao have drawn close attention from scholars. Weng pursued the “natural rhythm” through the examination of poetic forms. It then naturally led to the quest of Shenyun. Meanwhile, Gediao was also a concept of great importance when Weng studied the Chinese literary history. These thoughts thus amalgamated and developed into the all-round conception of Jili. Weng believed Jili could be used to answer the question of “what is a poem.” For the purpose of proving and demonstrating his theory, he even remolded the image of Du Fu (712-770) in Chinese poetic history.The poetic criticism of Weng Fanggang has always been regarded as the product of the “Evidential Scholarship” prevailing in mid Qing. The present study reveals that Weng’s poetic thoughts have made much contribution to the understanding of the “essence” of poetry, when we compare his conception of Jili to the modern researches on “Chinese Lyrical Tradition.” The historical and contemporary significance of Weng’s poetry criticism are hence reassured.</p

    本實驗利用微生物Tet-on系統結合Ac轉位子,期望建立一有效且精準控制之誘導系統,驅動轉位子轉位,快速且大量創造突變體。 在實驗中,利用PR-1a與Tet-on系統的Tetpro可誘導啟動子結合Ac轉位子與luc報導基因創造出三種系統,分別為TetLUC單一調控系統 (由Tetpro啟動子結合luc基因)、TetAc可誘導轉位子系統 (由Tetpro啟動子結合轉位酶基因) 與TetPR雙重調控系統 (由PR-1a啟動子結合rtTA基因,Tetpro啟動子結合luc基因)。 以農桿菌轉殖法在水稻 (單子葉植物) 與菸草 (雙子葉植物) 中創造出各系統之轉殖系。利用各轉殖系之癒傷組織進行誘導與檢測,發現TetLUC單一調控系統在水稻與菸草癒傷組織中,未誘導之Tetpro啟動子有自行啟動的情況,其比例在水稻轉殖系中約佔88.8 %。不過以誘導劑Doxycycline誘導,仍可增加水稻與菸草中LUC表現比例約2 ~ 92.7倍與2 ~ 24.63倍 (相對於未誘導之轉殖癒傷組織)。另外,TetAc可誘導轉位子系統中的水稻癒傷組織同樣發現自行表現的情況,使轉位子自行轉位,其比例約佔90.47 %。 為了解決自行轉位狀況,本實驗更進一步建立TetPR雙重調控系統。誘導發現,此系統的水稻癒傷組織啟動子已無自行表現的情況,且在經由兩種誘導劑水楊酸 (Salicylic acid) 與Doxycycline同時誘導下有最高增加16.81倍的LUC表現,不過其誘導後LUC表現量較弱。因此,未來研究重點為:提高誘導之表現量,以增強此系統在功能基因的利用性。In this study, the Tet-on system from microorganism was intergrated with Ac transposon in an attempt to construct an efficient and inducible transposon system in plant. We combined the Ac transposase with the inducible Tetpro promoter based on Tet-on system to create the inducible transposon, TetAc. As a control, the inducible Tetpro promoter was also fused with luc gene, termed as TetLUC system. Each system was introduced into rice and tobacco by agro-transformation. The transgenic calli of TetAc system were induced with several concentrations of doxycycline and induction periods. These inductions were applied to the control, TetLUC system. We found about 88.8 percent spontaneous transposition of TetAc in the transgenic rice lines. The Tetpro promoter of the TetLUC was also observed for about 90.47 percent spontaneous expression in transgenic rice lines. However, the Tetpro promoter of the TetLUC system could be induced by doxycycline and increased for about 2 ~ 92.7 -fold and 2 ~ 24.43 -fold of luc gene expression ratio (compare with uninduced transgenic line) in the rice and tobacco calli, respectively. In order to establish a double control system “TetPR”, we used luc and rtTA gene to fuse with the Tetpro and PR-1a inducible promoter, respectively. The TetPR system was indroduced into rice and tobacco by agro-transformation. No spontaneous expression was detected. After induced with doxycycline and salicylic acid in the rice calli of TetPR system, the LUC expression of the rice calli could achieve 16.82 -fold compared with non-induction. However, the luc gene expression is relatively low compared with the luc gene which was driven by 35S promoter.     Fu Describing About the Author Himself: A Focus on Ban Gu "You tong fu"

    From Later Han dynasty onwards, the number of fu describing about the author himself has increased. There are several possible reasons for this, but the most important reason is probably that there was no other genre through which one could express oneself except for fu in this period. For instance, the fiveword poetry was still in the middle way of establishing its own style at that moment. Moreover, in Former Han, there were few opportunities for authors to talk about themselves in detail in fu, because the main readers were emperors and kings of countries. In Later Han, the readers had become more diverse. That is probably the reason why more fu began to mention about the authors themselves in this period. Ban Gu (32-92), who is a representative scholar of Later Han and also a man of letters, expressed his aim by writing "You tong fu". Its main content is that though one's encounter with a disaster or felicity is not always derived from our behavior, we have to have a strong will and take action to overcome disasters. This idea is supported by Ban Gu's experiences of not attaining his aim. Such experiences are common in Chinese authors. One of the earliest examples is Chu Ci. Also, Chu Ci is the one of the origins of fu. It is surprising that authors expressed things about themselves mostly in fu describing journeys. It may be easier to understand this tendency if we think they substituted the heaven wander in Chu Ci with a ground journey. Chu Ci was a model for authors to express their aim which could not come true, even if the journey on the ground and the wander in heaven are different

    Online Iterative Adaptive Dynamic Programming Approach for Solving the Zero-Sum Game for Nonlinear Continuous-Time Systems with Partially Unknown Dynamics

    The current study presents an online iterative adaptive dynamic programming approach to resolve the zero-sum game (ZSG) for nonlinear continuous-time (CT) systems containing a partially unknown dynamic. The Hamilton-Jacobian-Issacs (HJI) equation is solved along the state trajectory according to the value function approximation and the policy improvement online. Relaxed dynamic programming is utilized to ensure the algorithm’s convergence. Model and costate networks were established to conduct the method.     A note of congratulations to Dr. Frank H. Fu (Fu Haojian) from Springfield College Alum, Jack Huang, Class of 1936, dated January 1, 1983. The card has country lane scene on the front, with a tree with pink leaves, a buttfly, and a tree with its leaves still green. There is the roof of a house just visible over the hill. It also says Congratulations. Inside is short message.Mr. Huang wrote a short personal note congratulating him for his efforts and the recent recognition by then President Ronald Reagan, or the actor as he refers to him, and saying how proud the Chinese are of him. An author of 17 textbooks and more than 100 journal articles, Frank H. Fu, G’73, DPE’75, has worked across the world in China, Canada, and the United States. Throughout his career, he has received many distinguished honors, including the Medal of Honor in 2009 by the SAR Government of Hong Kong. Fu has held positions at institutions such as the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Springfield College, where he served as director of the International Center starting in 1978. Five years later, Fu returned to Hong Kong, but has since remained actively involved with Springfield College, participating in talks on the campus and even hosting a gathering of nearly 60 alumni in Hong Kong. Currently, Fu is the associate vice president of Hong Kong Baptist University, where he also works as the director of the Dr. Stephen Hui Research Centre of Physical Recreation and Wellness. In addition, Fu is president of the Society of Chinese Scholars on Exercise Physiology and Fitness, chairperson of Hong Kong Coach Education Committee, a research fellow of the Research Consortium of SHAPE America, and an international fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology
