Regret-based decision-making style acts as a dispositional factor in risky choices
No full textPeople who anticipate the potential regret of one's decisions are believed to act in a more risk-averse manner and, thus, display fewer risk-taking behaviors across many domains. We conducted two studies to investigate whether individual differences in regret-based decision-making (a) reflect a unitary cognitive-style dimension, (b) are stable over time, and (c) predict later risk-taking behavior. In Study 1, 332 participants completed a regret-based decision-making style scale (RDS) to evaluate its psychometric qualities. In Study 2, participants ( N = 119) were tested on two separate occasions to assess the association between RDS and risk-taking. At Time 1, participants completed the RDS, as well as trait measures of anxiety and depression. One month later, they completed the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART) and state mood (Positive/Negative affect) scales. The RDS had a sound unidimensional factorial structure and was stable over time. Further, higher reported RDS scores were significantly associated with less risk-taking on the BART, holding other variables constant. These studies suggest that individual differences in regret-based decision-making may lead to a more cautious approach to real-world risk behaviors

Decision-making competence predicts domain-specific risk attitudes
Get PDFDecision-making competence (DMC) reflects individual differences in rational responding across several classic behavioral decision-making tasks. Although it has been associated with real-world risk behavior, less is known about the degree to which DMC contributes to specific components of risk attitudes. Utilizing a psychological risk-return framework, we examined the associations between risk attitudes and DMC. Italian community residents (n = 804) completed an online DMC measure, using a subset of the original Adult-DMC battery. Participants also completed a self-reported risk attitude measure for three components of risk attitudes (risk-taking, risk perceptions, and expected benefits) across six risk domains. Overall, greater performance on the DMC component scales were inversely, albeit modestly, associated with risk-taking tendencies. Structural equation modeling results revealed that DMC was associated with lower perceived expected benefits for all domains. In contrast, its association with perceived risks was more domain-specific. These analyses also revealed stronger indirect effects for the DMC → expected benefits → risk-taking path than the DMC → perceived risk → risk-taking path, especially for behaviors that may be considered more maladaptive in nature. These results suggest that DMC performance differentially impacts specific components of risk attitudes, and may be more strongly related to the evaluation of expected value of a specific behavior

Un approccio empirico per una tassonomia dei bias cognitivi
No full textIl presente studio si basa su una ricerca empirica finalizzata a creare una tassonomia delle euristiche e dei bias cognitivi. Nel corso degli anni diversi ricercatori hanno presentato tassonomie dei bias e delle euristiche costruite generalmente sulla base di differenti teorie cognitive (Arnott, 1998, 2006; Baron, 2008; Carter, Kaufmann, & Michel, 2007; Stanovich & West, 2008; Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). Questi studi hanno consentito di classificare con più accuratezza i numerosi bias e le euristiche presenti in letteratura. Tuttavia le tassonomie finora prodotte, essendo concepite a partire da differenti approcci teorici e sulla base di diversi criteri, non consentono un chiaro confronto tra le classificazioni.
Considerando questi aspetti la presente ricerca avanza la possibilità di creare una tassonomia empirica delle euristiche e dei bias in base alle predisposizioni individuali d’incorrere nelle fallacie cognitive. Le differenze cognitive individuali sono state misurate con la risoluzione di alcuni problemi estratti dalla letteratura scientifica e creati dagli autori al fine di individuare le stesse euristiche e bias. Diversi problemi adattati ad item sono stati strutturati in un questionario e presentati a un campione di 90 studenti
