    No full text
MYSTICAL MOTIVES IN CHINESE MEDIEVAL NOVEL Yaroslav Shcherbakov The purpose of the article is to study Chinese medieval mystical novel’s genesis, the main mystic motives in Chinese early medieval short novel, including Taoism and Chinese Buddhism influence. The historical reason’s observation of medieval short novel`s genesis, including the analysis of intellectual world atmosphere in early dark medieval times is also proposed. This thesis systemized different genres of Chinese medieval mystical short novel, influences from sociо-historical process to mystical novel’s genesis. The key attention is focused on Gan Bao “Sao Shenji” and Buddhist short novel’s genesis and main characteristic. Using the methods of historical cross-culture studies and historiographic analysis of classical Chinese texts, such as Bao “Sao Shenji”, Lu Yiqing, Wang Yan and Hou Bo short medieval Buddhist novel (xiaoshuo) the author explores ер specificity of Chinese medieval prose. Chinese medieval prose is analyzed in the context of world history and in the context of Chinese literature genre paradigm history. It has also analyzed the main characteristic of a short mystical novel chronotope, which, according to the author of the article, usually reflects two mains levels of reality: absolute and relative. The article explores the main religious influences on the short medieval novel, especially the influence of the cult of Heaven, Tengranism, Chinese Buddhism and religious Taoism. Chinese medieval mystical novel was a new Chinese literature genre, which included detailed portrait characteristics of the main heroes, pseudohistorical motives and structured symbolic chronotope. It has combined Buddhist, Confucian and Taoist philosophy, high literary style, unpredictable plot and elements of folklore. Short medieval novel had a strong influence on the further development of Chinese literature.

Enacting Privacy and Everydayness online: The case study of the Spiteful Tots community

This thesis focuses on an online Taiwanese community named the Spiteful Tots. The long-term participants are mainly gay men, with several lesbian women, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and heterosexual people. The community, whilst accessible by anyone via a registered screen ID name, operates like a private club. As a part of this community from its beginning in 2000, I am interested in the community in this particular location, not least because of my own affiliation with Taiwan, but because of the cultural specificity of Taiwan as non-Western and yet Westernised. My research methodology is based on approaches inspired by ethnography. I observe the dynamics, participate in the community, collect data, and visit online and offline sites to formulate ideas in relation to both the inside and outside of the community. I use knowledge and experience gained from my interaction with the Spiteful Tots participants and with the wider Taiwanese society. I locate the community within the culture of contemporary Taiwan, utilising and critiquing previous literature on the politics of sexuality, gender theories, and critical analyses of heteronormativity. My findings are: a) the Spiteful Tots participants carefully negotiate ways of maintaining privacy within the group, and do not ‘come out’ in recognised LGBT ways; b) the Spiteful Tots community focuses on discussion of mundane everyday life, rather than on sexual politics. My findings have the following implications: a) privacy and everydayness enables the Spiteful Tots participants to assert 'freedom from scrutiny and created a zone of "relative insularity"' (Cohen 2000); b) a rejection to heteronormativity is enabled by (re)asserting the right of privacy and validating everyday life as a gay or queer subject, and c) therefore, there needs to be consideration and recognition of gay or queer subjects’ right of privacy, as well as academic and political attention to the representation of sexual minorities’ everydayness

Blind fault branching and propagation beneath Central Myanmar Basin revealed by high-resolution aftershock location and focal mechanism of the 2019 Mw5.5 YeU earthquake sequence

Accurate and precise location and focal mechanism of aftershocks is a fundamental topic in seismology. However, nearfield seismic observations are usually not available for high-resolution source studies, or even when they are available high frequency waveform analyses are rarely conducted to extract more information. Here we study a unique dense nodal array data acquired by the deployment in the source region of the 2019 Mw5.5 strike-slip earthquake in Central Myanmar Basin (CMB). The network, composed of 20 nodal stations with station spacing of ~5km, was deployed ~2 weeks after the mainshock for ~ 40 days. We applied a machine learning based algorithm (Earthquake-Transformer) to detect 667 events from the dataset. Double difference relocation reveals that these events are distributed between 7 to 16 km in depth with a near E-W trending horizontal distribution, which is consistent with the left-lateral fault plane solution of the mainshock. On the vertical component of most of the stations, we observed a strong phase between P and S arrival times. This is an S-to-P converted phase from a sharp velocity boundary between the basin and the bedrock. The best 1D velocity model constrained by 3-component waveform modelling suggests a sedimentary layer thickness of ~3.5km beneath the stations. To determine the focal mechanism of aftershocks, we conducted high-frequency (up to a few Hz) waveform inversions that result in high quality waveform fits hence robust focal mechanisms of ~ 100 aftershocks with Mw1-2. In these focal mechanisms, ~50% are strike-slip events, ~40% are thrust events and ~10% are normal events, all corresponding to NE-SW oriented compressive stress. The thrust events have strikes oriented mostly in NW-SE direction and have dip angles of ~ 45°. Highly diverse aftershock focal mechanisms suggest the fault system is likely immature. The thrust and normal events indicate that the mainshock rupture had branched into or activated nearby secondary faults, which allow the strike-slip fault to propagate and develop a more complex fault system
