Touching the Gods: physical interaction with cult statues in the Roman world
„Touching the Gods: physical interaction with cult statues in the Roman world‟ explores different forms of physical interaction with cult statues in the many cults and beliefs evident across the Roman world, and proposes wide-ranging implications of this for the understanding of Roman religions and Roman art. Despite the theoretical detachment of the cult statue in the Roman world, an ideological language of close physical interaction was developed, which manifested itself through both „regular‟ (for example, ritual decoration and washing) and „irregular‟ (such as sexual and violent) contact. Although modern scholarship accepts that cult statues formed part of religious worship within which physical interaction took place, they are generally treated as passive objects. This research addresses the implications of physical interaction for the active role of the statue within Roman societies, through the assessment of the anthropological, social and psychological functions the statue could embody. It establishes a socio-cultural definition of the cult statue in the Roman world, supported by an assessment of Greek and Latin vocabulary for statuary and an assessment of the physical evidence for cult images. The thesis separately considers the different types of interaction, including washing and clothing, verbal communication, transportation, embrace, violence and feeding. The conclusions drawn from these separate types are based partly on a broad study of the full range of interactions, with an additional focus on the points in the ancient dialogue at which their limitations are placed. The cumulative effect of the evidence, across the whole empire and across all interactions possible, illuminates the vast complexity and vast potential of images of the gods in forming, informing and being influenced by human relationships with the divine
Seeking according to G. H.
The aim of the M.A. thesis The Seeking according to G. H. is to introduce the prose The Passion According to G. H. by Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector (1920-1977) and examine this literary work in relation to biblical motives which appear in the novel. First, the author presents Lispectorʼs life and work and mentions her contribution to the Brazilian literary canon. Then he thoroughly analyses and interprets the prose The Passion According to G. H. In the next section, he focuses on selected Biblical motives and shows semantic shifts in the work. The thesis is subsequently concluded by a brief reflection on the function of Biblical themes. Keywords: Clarice Lispector, The Passion According to G. H., Brazilian literature of the twentieth century, intertextuality, biblical theme
Rotationally resolved infrared spectrum of the Li+-D-2 cation complex
The infrared spectrum of mass selected Li+-D-2 cations is recorded in the D-D stretch region (2860-2950 cm(-1)) in a tandem mass spectrometer by monitoring Li+ photofragments. The D-D stretch vibration of Li+-D-2 is shifted by -79 cm(-1) from that of the free D-2 molecule indicating that the vibrational excitation of the D-2 subunit strengthens the effective Li+center dot D-2 intermolecular interaction. Around 100 rovibrational transitions, belonging to parallel K-a=0-0, 1-1, and 2-2 subbands, are fitted to a Watson A-reduced Hamiltonian to yield effective molecular parameters. The infrared spectrum shows that the complex consists of a Li+ ion attached to a slightly perturbed D-2 molecule with a T-shaped equilibrium configuration and a 2.035 A vibrationally averaged intermolecular separation. Comparisons are made between the spectroscopic data and data obtained from rovibrational calculations using a recent three dimensional Li+-D-2 potential energy surface [R. Martinazzo, G. Tantardini, E. Bodo, and F. Gianturco, J. Chem. Phys. 119, 11241 (2003)]. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics
The Al+-H-2 cation complex: Rotationally resolved infrared spectrum, potential energy surface, and rovibrational calculations
The infrared spectrum of the Al+-H-2 complex is recorded in the H-H stretch region (4075-4110 cm(-1)) by monitoring Al+ photofragments. The H-H stretch band is centered at 4095.2 cm(-1), a shift of -66.0 cm(-1) from the Q(1)(0) transition of the free H-2 molecule. Altogether, 47 rovibrational transitions belonging to the parallel K-a=0-0 and 1-1 subbands were identified and fitted using a Watson A-reduced Hamiltonian, yielding effective spectroscopic constants. The results suggest that Al+-H-2 has a T-shaped equilibrium configuration with the Al+ ion attached to a slightly perturbed H-2 molecule, but that large-amplitude intermolecular vibrational motions significantly influence the rotational constants derived from an asymmetric rotor analysis. The vibrationally averaged intermolecular separation in the ground vibrational state is estimated as 3.03 A, decreasing by 0.03 A when the H-2 subunit is vibrationally excited. A three-dimensional potential energy surface for Al+-H-2 is calculated ab initio using the coupled cluster CCSD(T) method and employed for variational calculations of the rovibrational energy levels and wave functions. Effective dissociation energies for Al+-H-2(para) and Al+-H-2(ortho) are predicted, respectively, to be 469.4 and 506.4 cm(-1), in good agreement with previous measurements. The calculations reproduce the experimental H-H stretch frequency to within 3.75 cm(-1), and the calculated B and C rotational constants to within similar to 2%. Agreement between experiment and theory supports both the accuracy of the ab initio potential energy surface and the interpretation of the measured spectrum
H. G. Adler (1910-1988)
The result of my extensive research project is the first comprehensive study on the life and work of H. G. Adler, an important member of the circle around Elias and Veza Canetti, Erich Fried etc., whose ground-breaking scholarly work long overshadowed his reputation as a creative writer. Adler, a German-Jewish writer, born in Prague in 1910, was the inmate of various National Socialist concentration camps (Theresienstadt, Auschwitz) during the Second World War and lived in exile in London from 1947 until his death in 1988.
Both as a scholar and as a creative writer, this prolific author is one of the most interesting and most versatile personalities in postwar history. In addition to publishing seminal works on the Holocaust, he left behind an important and to a large extent unpublished body of work, consisting of narrative prose, poetry and drama as well as scholarly articles and books on history, sociology, politics, psychology, language and literature, music, arts, philosophy, theology and Jewish studies. The works of H. G. Adler address central contemporary concerns, cover a large number of areas of interest (European cultural and intellectual history, 20th century German literature, exile studies, Holocaust research etc.) and shall thus - so I hope - attract considerably more attention in the future.
This monograph attempts to close a major gap in exile studies that has often been complained about in the past. Its most important topical areas are: H. G. Adler's biography, Theresienstadt (Terezín), exile in England, the development and interdependence of scholarly work and literature, H. G. Adler's position amongst writers such as Karl Kraus, Franz Kafka, George Orwell, Elias Canetti and W. G. Sebald, H. G. Adler as Franz Baermann Steiner's literary executor, H. G. Adler's position amongst London émigrés, H. G. Adler and Austria (despite his exile in England, Adler throughout his life remained closely associated with Austrian culture).
This study focuses on Adler's most important and best known works "Theresienstadt 1941-1945" and "Die verheimlichte Wahrheit", books and articles like "Die Dichtung der Prager Schule" and "Der Kampf gegen die 'Endlösung der Judenfrage'", which have hitherto been neglected by academic research, the voluminous autobiographically structured or autobiographically influenced novels "Panorama", "Eine Reise" and "Die unsichtbare Wand" as well as numerous unpublished texts, documents and photographs from Adler's literary estate. It is rounded off by a complete bibliography of H. G. Adler's publication from 1947 to 1988.
The time for a monograph about H. G. Adler is ideal: 2008 - 20th anniversary of H. G. Adler's death; 2010 - H. G. Adler's 100th birthday
DIALOGO TEMA H. G. GADAMERIO HERMENEUTINĖJE FILOSOFIJOJE
