Rice University Owls football player Joe L. Watson
Black and white photograph of Rice Institute Owls football player Joe L. Watson, class of 1950, accompanied by text headlining his achievement and entry into the Rice Athletic Hall of Fame.Caption reads:
One rainy night in old Rice Stadium, JOE L. WATSON, Class of ’50, tackled LSU’s big Elbert Van Buren so hard he clicked Cajun teeth from Houston to Breaux Bridge. That was the way Joe played his four great years of football at Rice, three times All-SWC winding up with All-American honors and the George Martin MVP Award on the great ’49 Conference and Cotton Bowl champs, ranked 5th in the nation. Every place had a how-Big-Joe-hit-‘em story – A & M, TCU, Arkansas – you name it. He even smacked a kickoff so hard it bounced off an SMU player back into Joe’s hands, giving Rice its go-ahead chance over Doak Walker and his 1949 Mustangs. Joe came out of Temple High just in time to salute Uncle Sam and march to World War II. He played service football while in training at Lake Charles and Barksdale Air Force Bases. He came to Rice as a mature freshman in 1946, standing six two and weighing 230 pounds. Joe played one year of pro ball for the Detroit Lions, then hung ‘em up to become what he still is – sales engineer for Gulf Oil.Rice Athletic Hall of Fam
