Francis stated, this was a red letter day for Elon College to have the Governor of Arkansas, Clinton, (the Democratic Presidential candidate), along with Gore (the Democratic Vice President candidate from Tennessee) and their wives stop at Elon College. The prior week, Elon College was excited with President George H. W. Bush, Sr., (in 1992, 41st President of the United States) came through on his campaign train. Young stated, we welcome Governor James Baxter (Jim) Hunt, Jr from North Carolina and our local delegates. Young stated, we really want to welcome Mrs. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Aitcheson Gore. Young called upon Lela Faye Rich, Coordinator of the Planning Committee of the Campus Democrats. Rich made a special presentation to Mrs. Hillary Rodham Clinton. Rich stated, we are appreciative of Mrs. Rodham Clinton traveling on the bus tour and that she (Clinton) was the role model for women of the 1990s. Rich and the crowd sang Happy Birthday to Hillary Rodham Clinton with a banner that read Happy Birthday Hillary. Young shook Hunt"s hand. Young introduced Gore who spoke. Gore asked the crowd, are they ready for change? Gore introduced the next governor of North Carolina, Hunt. Hunt stated, he had a vision and leadership with fresh ideas and we needed him (Hunt) to move North Carolina forward to bring the change to this state. Gore urged the crowd to re-elect James (Terry) Sanford. An Elon College banner was the back-drop for the speakers. Gore discussed why the young voters" votes are important for both the democratic international and domestic scenes. Gore discussed current political economics with fewer jobs when the Bush administration was in office with a movie joke. There was a sign language interpreter. Gore stated that he saw signs on the Elon Campus about cleaning up the environment and wanted to clean up the environment in this country when elected in 1992. Gore talked about creating more environmental jobs within this country. Gore stated, we are tired of read my lips (a President George Bush saying) government. Clinton spoke about his joy about being back at Elon College. Clinton encouraged the audience to vote for Hunt and Sanford. Clinton stated there were only eight (8) days left in the presidential election campaign and Clinton explained why he got into the race. He said that President Bush wanted the United States people to trust him with four more years when during the campaign time, the FBI was investigating the Justice Department and they in turn were investigating each other. In Atlanta, Georgia, there was a criminal investigation in the diversion of money for Saddam Hussein to build up his war weaponry. Clinton continued to discuss Bush"s investigations. Clinton claimed the United States needed change with three priority issues" not competing and winning in technology, taxing the middle class, and not investing in new programs in putting people back to work. In conclusion, Clinton said investment and growth with change is required during the next four years. What you earn is what you learn because college dropout rates are higher than high school, said Clinton. We can solve the financial problems by working from the grass roots up. Clinton said if you vote for the Democratic Presidential ticket and put us in the White House, we will work to represent all Americans without regard to race, religion, or gender, we will try to protect the individual rights of Americans to control their own lives, and bring the American people together for a new majority for change. Clinton said, I want you to seize your day in eight (8) days because it belongs to you, help us, and we will claim it. Clinton said, God Bless you all. Interviews are done with people in the crowd. Deep Waters The Textual Continuum in American Indian Literature
Weaving connections between indigenous modes of oral storytelling, visual depiction, and contemporary American Indian literature, Deep Waters demonstrates the continuing relationship between traditional and contemporary Native American systems of creative representation and signification. Christopher B. Teuton begins with a study of Mesoamerican writings, Diné sand paintings, and Haudenosaunee wampum belts. He proposes a theory of how and why indigenous oral and graphic means of recording thought are interdependent, their functions and purposes determined by social, political, and cultural contexts.Cover -- Title Page -- Copyright Page -- Contents -- Acknowledgments -- Introduction -- 1. Contribution of Judge Antônio Augusto Cançado Trindade to the Adjudication of International Human Rights at the International Court of Justice
Christopher Waters, in the Introduction to this book, pays tribute to the considerable contribution that Professor Sandy Ghandhi made to legal scholarship, teaching and advocacy, particularly, though not exclusively, in the area of human rights law. The present author fully agrees with this assessment and has himself drawn upon Ghandhi’s insights in his own writing. He would be remiss, however, not to also express his personal gratitude to Ghandhi for mentoring him when he began his academic career as a lecturer in the School of Law at the University of Reading (2007–12). Intellectually, of course, Ghandhi was first class, but what most remains with the present author after over five years as one of Ghandhi’s mentees is his modesty, as well as his gentle nature and kindness. Perhaps this was because Ghandhi sensed that a commitment to human rights, understood holistically, is not simply about challenging the powerful to “humanise” their rule, though it is surely this, but also extends to caring for specific men and women as one encounters them in one’s daily life, at a personal level. It is a privilege to be able to contribute to this collection of essays in honour of Ghandhi
Surveillance of adenoviruses and noroviruses in European recreational waters
Exposure to human pathogenic viruses in recreational waters has been shown to cause disease outbreaks. In the context of Article 14 of the revised European Bathing Waters Directive 2006/7/EC (rBWD, CEU, 2006) a Europe-wide surveillance study was carried out to determine the frequency of occurrence of two human enteric viruses in recreational waters. Adenoviruses were selected based on their near-universal shedding and environmental survival, and noroviruses (NoV) selected as being the most prevalent gastroenteritis agent worldwide. Concentration of marine and freshwater samples was done by adsorption/elution followed by molecular detection by (RT)-PCR. Out of 1410 samples, 553 (39.2%) were positive for one or more of the target viruses. Adenoviruses, detected in 36.4% of samples, were more prevalent than noroviruses (9.4%), with 3.5% GI and 6.2% GII, some samples being positive for both GI and GII. Of 513 human adenovirus-positive samples, 63 (12.3%) were also norovirus-positive, whereas 69 (7.7%) norovirus-positive samples were adenovirus-negative. More freshwater samples than marine water samples were virus-positive. Out of a small selection of samples tested for adenovirus infectivity, approximately one-quarter were positive. Sixty percent of 132 nested-PCR adenovirus-positive samples analysed by quantitative PCR gave a mean value of over 3000 genome copies per L of water. The simultaneous detection of infectious adenovirus and of adenovirus and NoV by (RT)PCR suggests that the presence of infectious viruses in recreational waters may constitute a public health risk upon exposure. These studies support the case for considering adenoviruses as an indicator of bathing water quality
