Arna bicostata Wang, Wang & Fan sp. nov. (Figs. 3–4, 28, 42) Diagnosis. Forewing length 10–14 mm. Forewing yellow, with two pale transverse lines medially; hindwing pale yellow. Description. Male and female. Vertex covered with pale yellow scales. Labial palpus short, upturned. Thorax and tegulae yellow. Forewing yellow, with a deep yellow band between two pale transverse lines medially, the band shaded grey in some specimens; venation with R 2, R 3, R 4 and R 5 stalked, R 2 branching off more distally than R 5, M 1 arising from upper angle of distal cell, M 3 from under angle of distal cell, M 2, M 3 and CuA 1 isolated, CuA 1 parallel to CuA 2. Hindwing paler yellow; venation with Rs stalked with M 1 at basal 1 / 4, M 2 arising from near under angle of distal cell, M 3 and CuA 1 short stalked. Male genitalia (Fig. 28): Uncus broad, apically divided in the dorso-ventral plane, triangular at apex of dorsal part; valva narrowed from apex of sacculus to costa; saccus small; aedeagus straight. Female genitalia (Fig. 42): Apophysis anterioris almost as long as apophysis posterioris, but thicker than the latter; ostium U-shaped; base of ductus inflated, lightly sclerotized; signum absent. Type material: Holotype: 3, Nanling National Nature Reserve, Guangdong, 7.V. 2009, leg. H.S. Wang. Paratypes: 4 3, 2 Ƥ, same data as the holotype; 2 3, same locality, 1.VI. 2006, leg. L.S. Chen, M. Wang. Distribution. China (Guangdong). Etymology. The specific name is derived from Latin, “bicostatus,” referring to the forewing with two pale lines medially. Remarks. The genus Arna Walker was reviewed by Holloway (1999) who reported 12 species. A Chinese species Euproctis pentamaculata described by Chao (1984) should also belong to this genus according to the male genitalia illustrated in his Fig. 230, along with A. pseudoconspersa (Strand) and the new species. As a result, 15 species of the genus are now recorded. The new species is similar to Arna bipunctapex, but can be easily separated from the latter by the following characters: forewing yellow with two pale transverse median lines; hindwing pale yellow; uncus less acute at apex of dorsal part, valva with shorter protrusion at apex of costa; female with a smaller ostium.Published as part of Wang, Houshuai, Wang, Min & Fan, Xiaoling, 2011, Notes on the tribe Nygmiini (Lepidoptera: Erebidae: Lymantriinae) from Nanling National Nature Reserve, with description of a new species, pp. 57-68 in Zootaxa 2887 on page 58, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.20082

Painting as Document: The Image and Poem of Wang Xizhi Writing on a Fan

    No full text
A lengthy preface by Ishō Tokugan is inscribed above the image of Wang Xizhi Writing on a Fan. According to this inscription this picture came into its present appearance through the following course of events. (1) Josetsu painted the episode of Wang Xizhi writing on a fan. (2) Daigaku Shūsū, who cherished this painting, wrote a Chinese poem on the fan painted by Josetsu. (3) A disciple of Daigaku, Shikyō Zenko, acquired the fan, cut it into the shape of a round Chinese fan, and remounted the painting as a hanging scroll. (4) Ishō Tokugan, responding to Shikyō's request, inscribes a preface above the painting. This sort of painting thus problematizes the very concepts of object, artist, and narrative (monogatari), which are usually used unconsciously. The work Wang Xizhi Writing on a Fan goes through several transformations from simply a fan painted by Josetsu to a hanging scroll with a formal preface inscribed by Ishō. At which step in this process are we to call the object a “complete” work of art? Is Ishō the “author” of Wang Xizhi Writing on a Fan? In Ishō's preface, he recounts both the semi-lengendary episode of Wang Xizhi writing on a fan and records the process through which the painted image came into existence. Is Ishộ the “author” or is he the “explainer”? There are two stories recounted in Wang Xizhi Writing on a Fan: the episode of Wang Xizhi writing on a fan, and the story of Josetsu, Daigaku, Shikyō, and Ishō creating and transforming the work of art Wang Xizhi Writing on a Fan into its present state. The former story takes place in the distant past, while the latter is an historical document that describes the doings of Muromachi period Zen monks. How are we to treat these respective narratives? The present essay investigates the questions outlined above, and considers the construction of narratives in the work of art Wang Xizhi Writing on a Fan.journal articl

Using performance assessment in secondary school mathematics: an empirical study in a Singapore classroom

    No full text
This article reports an exploratory study on using performance assessment in mathematics instruction in a high-performing secondary school in Singapore. An intact mathematics class participated in the study, and received chapter-based performance tasks as intervention during regular mathematics lessons for about one and a half school years. The performance tasks used included authentic and/or open-ended tasks. The students’ academic achievements and attitudes in mathematics were compared with a comparison class that did not receive the intervention. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected, mainly through questionnaire surveys, performance task tests, conventional school exams, and interviews with students and teachers. The results suggest that the students receiving the intervention performed significantly better than their counterparts in solving conventional exam problems, and in general they also showed more positive changes in attitudes towards mathematics and mathematics learning. The students from the experimental class also expressed positive views about the benefits of using performance tasks in promoting their ability in higher order thinking, though no statistically significant difference was detected between the two classes of students in solving unconventional tasks before and after intervention. Overall, the results appear to support teachers’ using contextualised problems in real life situations and open-ended investigations in students’ learning of mathematic
