Wang Meng and contemporary Chinese literature: the vicissitudes of a committed writer
This thesis examines the way Wang Meng has developed as a writer from the 1950s to the 1990s in the context of New China's political and literary background. It looks at the compromises he was forced to make between his political beliefs in the Communist Party and his chosen role as a professional writer. After his disastrous early foray into what was deemed to be unacceptable political criticism with The Young Newcomer in the Organisation Department in the 1950s, when the opportunity came to start publishing again in the late 1970s he was boldly innovative in style, helping to transform New Period literature, but conservative in content, sticking to politically acceptable topics. It was only with Hard Porridge in 1989 that he ventured again, and very successfully, into political comment. There is no outstanding leading writer in contemporary China, but Wang Meng is a leading contender for the title
Two-dimensional Ferronematics, Canonical Harmonic Maps and Minimal Connections
We study a variational model for ferronematics in two-dimensional domains, in
the "super-dilute" regime. The free energy functional consists of a reduced
Landau-de Gennes energy for the nematic order parameter, a Ginzburg-Landau type
energy for the spontaneous magnetisation, and a coupling term that favours the
co-alignment of the nematic director and the magnetisation. In a suitable
asymptotic regime, we prove that the nematic order parameter converges to a
canonical harmonic map with non-orientable point defects, while the
magnetisation converges to a singular vector field, with line defects that
connect the non-orientable point defects in pairs, along a minimal connection.Comment: 56 pages, 3 figure

Dialoguing with the World: Xue Yiwei and His Traveling with Marco Polo
This essay introduces the author Xue Yiwei and his Traveling with Marco Polo, a creative collection that dialogues with Invisible Cities by the postmodern Italian writer Italo Calvino. While Calvino imagines a young Marco Polo describing the fantastic sights of fifty-five cities to an aging Kublai Khan, Xue Yiwei joins the conversation and provides a meticulous explication of each one of Calvino’s cities. Furthermore, Traveling with Marco Polo expands the imaginary cityscapes to include oblique commentaries on the past, present, and future of China as well as the profound meditation on the city as a microcosm of our world. The result is a daring literary experiment that is representative of Xue’s oeuvre overall: at once giving a powerful literary representation of modern Chinese history while engaging in dialogue with writers from all over the world
Order Reconstruction for Nematics on Squares with Isotropic Inclusions: A Landau--De Gennes Study
We prove the existence of a well order reconstruction solution (WORS)-type Landau- de Gennes critical point on a square domain with an isotropic concentric square inclusion, with tangent boundary conditions on the outer square edges. There are two geometrical parameters-the outer square edge length λ , and the aspect ratio ρ , which is the ratio of the inner and outer square edge lengths. The WORS exists for all geometrical parameters and all temperatures, and is globally stable for either λ small enough or for ρ sufficiently close to unity. We study three different types of Landau-de Gennes critical points in this setting: Critical points with the minimal two degrees of freedom consistent with the imposed boundary conditions, critical points with three degrees of freedom, and critical points with five degrees of freedom. We identify the competitors for the WORS in the two- and three-dimensional settings. In the three-dimensional setting, we numerically find up to 28 critical points for moderately large values of ρ , of which diagonal solutions are global energy minimizers when they exist. We find two nonenergy minimizing critical points with five degrees of freedom for very small values of ρ , with an escaped profile around the isotropic square inclusion.</p
Dynamic mode decomposition and reconstruction of transient cavitating flows around a Clark-Y hydrofoil
The transient cavitating flow around the Clark-Y hydrofoil is numerically investigated by the dynamic mode decomposition with criterion. Based on the ranking dominant modes, frequencies of the first four modes are in good accordance with those obtained by fast Fourier transform. Furthermore, the cavitating flow field is reconstructed by the first four modes, and the dominant flow features are well captured with the reconstructed error below 12% when compared to the simulated flow field. This paper offers a reference for observing and reconstructing the flow fields, and gives a novel insight into the transient cavitating flow features.</p
Foreign ownership, bank information environments, and the international mobility of corporate governance
This paper investigates how foreign ownership shapes bank information environments. Using a sample of listed banks from 60 countries over 1997-2012 we show that foreign ownership is significantly associated with greater (lower) informativeness (synchronicity) in bank stock prices. We also find that stock returns of foreign-owned banks reflect more information about future earnings. In addition, the positive association between price informativeness and foreign ownership is stronger for foreign-owned banks in countries with stronger governance, stronger banking supervision, and lower monitoring costs. Overall, our evidence suggests foreign ownership reduces bank opacity by exporting governance, yielding important implications for regulators and governments
Unveiling the links between physical activity, self-identity, social anxiety, and emotional eating among overweight and obese young adults
Introduction
Emotional eating not only contributes to physical obesity but also leads to the experience of guilt and shame, exacerbating emotional problems. Increasing physical activity, adopting a balanced diet, and seeking psychological support help improve emotional eating issues in overweight or obese young adults, enhancing overall mental and physical well-being.
Methods
This study investigates the correlation between physical activity, self-identity, social anxiety, and emotional eating among 373 overweight and obese college students aged 18–26 in central China. By utilizing AMOS v.26, a structural equation model was constructed to examine the hypotheses.
Results
The findings reveal that physical activity significantly influences self-identity and social anxiety, which, in turn, significantly impact emotional eating. Moreover, self-identity and social anxiety serve as mediators in the relationship between physical activity and emotional eating. These results emphasize the role of physical activity in mitigating emotional eating among young individuals struggling with overweight and obesity.
Discussion
Consequently, the government and relevant agencies are urged to address the issue of obesity among young adults and provide support for their engagement in physical activity
